Dr. Dre is facing a $10 million lawsuit accusing him of a “malicious campaign of harassment” against a psychiatrist who says he served as a marriage counselor and mediator for the rapper and his ex-wife before and during their divorce.

In a case filed Wednesday (Oct. 9) in Los Angeles court, Dr. Charles J. Sophy claimed Dre (Andre Young) had subjected him to an “ongoing barrage of threats” after he had “worked diligently” to help him resolve his disputes with then-wife Nicole Young.

“Rather than treating the mediation process as an opportunity for healing, [Dre] decided to take his frustrations about the mediation out on Dr. Sophy — frustrations that manifested themselves in the form of a nearly year-long sustained campaign of late-night texts, threats of intimidation and violence, and homophobic rhetoric,” writes the doctor’s lawyer, Christopher Frost of the firm Frost LLP.

The lawsuit seeks a restraining order against further harassment, as well as monetary damages that the accuser’s attorneys say should total at least $10 million. A representative for Dr. Dre did not immediately return a request for comment.

Nicole Young filed for divorce from Dr. Dre in 2020 after 24 years of marriage, citing allegations of abusive behavior that Dre vehemently denied. After another 18 months of legal wrangling, the couple finalized their divorce in December 2021 with a $100 million settlement.

According to Sophy’s lawsuit, the pair engaged him in 2018 for a “joint psychotherapist-patient relationship” in which he provided therapy and marriage counseling. After the divorce case began, he says he continued to work with the couple, along with their attorneys, to mediate the terms of the dissolution.

In February 2023, Sophy claims that after months of no contact, Dre began harassing him via text message. According to an alleged screenshot included in the complaint, in the first such message, Dre told Sophy that he had been told something “disturbing” by an unnamed person, followed by a threat: “You’re going to have to pay for that.”

Over the two months following that first text, Sophy says Dre repeatedly sent him threatening texts, accusing the doctor of “ethical breaches” and threatening to report him to medical regulators. In one, he allegedly told Sophy, “you f—ed with the wrong one”; in another, Dre allegedly said he was “not playing, trust me.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Dre allegedly wrote in an April 2023 text, “until you explain to me why you tried to talk [an unnamed person] into saying negative things about me to the media.” Sophy says there is “no truth behind these baseless and far-fetched accusations” and that he tried to ignore the threats, but that he eventually began to fear for his safety.

Related

“Young, a prominent and powerful figure in the music industry with a well-documented history of violence and abuse, carried out a series of unlawful acts deliberately intended to threaten, intimidate, terrorize, and ultimately ruin Dr. Sophy personally and professionally,” the lawsuit reads.

The threats extended beyond text messages, according to the lawsuit. In one alleged incident, Sophy claims that fake FBI agents, hired by Dre, arrived at his gated community and told a security guard that they needed to “talk” with the doctor at his home.

“This incident, which occurred immediately after the initial texts were sent in February, was not a coincidence,” Sophy’s lawyers write. “It was a calculated, unlawful attempt … to threaten his physical safety and send the unmistakable message that Young can reach Dr. Sophy even in the sanctity of his home.”

The incident caused Sophy to “fear for his life” and “resort to extreme security measures,” including hiring private security and wearing a bulletproof vest. His lawyers say the “egregiousness” of Dre’s conduct eventually “compelled Dr. Sophy to seek redress and protection” in the courts.

“Dr. Sophy does not relish suing a former patient,” the doctor’s lawyers write. “Nobody should have to live in constant fear. But Dr. Sophy does — ironically, for no other reason than he tried to help Young to resolve his own family’s conflict.”

In technical terms, the lawsuit accuses Dre of harassment and intentional infliction of emotional distress, as well as violation of a California law prohibiting the use of force or threat of violence to interfere with someone’s civil rights. The lawsuit also claims that some of the threats were based on Sophy’s sexual orientation, meaning they violated a California hate crime statute.

Billboard has been around since 1894 and is still going strong. In the last couple years, Billboard has been featured as a category in Jeopardy! (more than once), popped up in the HBO show The Last of Us and gotten a shout out from Kendrick Lamar on the remix to Beyoncé’s “America Has a Problem.” On Wednesday (Oct. 9), our long-running media brand added a new feather to its cap, thanks to The New York Times Games.

Warning: Spoiler ahead.

NYT Connections, one of the most popular fixtures of the NYT Games app, featured Billboard as an answer. For those who don’t play, Connections shows the user a grid of 16 items (usually single words rendered in all caps) and challenges them to make connections between four sets of four items, with varying levels of difficulty. Naturally, some of the words have double meanings, and oftentimes the similarities are cleverly (if not diabolically) masked. It’s a stimulating, addictive and occasionally frustrating game.

Wednesday’s puzzle featured 16 items, of which “Billboard” was one. By linking it to “Pitchfork,” “Spin” and “Mojo,” the category was revealed as “music publications.” The category was assigned the color blue, meaning it was the second-trickiest category of the Oct. 9, 2024, puzzle. According to the in-app Connections Bot, 3% of players solved the blue category first – so if you were one of them, consider yourself part of the music media intelligentsia.

For our part, we’re honored to be included an answer in the Gray Lady’s marvelous (and highly successful) collection of games.

Current CMA entertainer of the year nominee Jelly Roll has teamed with American Greetings, as the company rolls out four new Creatacard digital greeting cards just ahead of World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10.

The virtual cards will be free on Oct. 10 and were personally designed by Jelly Roll and his team. Each card features messages of encouragement and inspiration, including “We find hope when the times are hardest,” and “It’s okay to not be okay.” Each card also includes a clip of Jelly Roll’s song “I Am Not Okay,” from his upcoming album, Beautifully Broken, out Oct. 11. Each card can also be customized with photos and video, a personalized message, digital envelope liner and stamp.

Jelly Roll is the latest country artist to join forces with American Greetings. Luke Combs launched a Father’s Day series in June, while Dolly Parton has created a variety of Creatacards with American Greetings and Lainey Wilson debuted her Creatacard collection with the brand earlier in the year.

“Since bursting on the music scene, Jelly Roll has been passionate about breaking down the stereotypes surrounding mental health issues,” Rob Matousek, Executive Director, Direct to Consumer Business at American Greetings, said in a statement. “Having the opportunity to collaborate with Jelly Roll to bring this topic to life in a thoughtful way through virtual greeting cards is an honor and a great opportunity to help us achieve our mission to help make the world a more thoughtful and caring place.”

Jelly Roll recently revealed the tracklist for his upcoming album, which will include collaborations with MGK (“Time of Day”), Ilsey (“When The Drugs Don’t Work”) and Wiz Khalifa (“Higher Than Heaven”). Jelly Roll’s “I Am Not Okay,” featured on the album, is currently at No. 5 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart.

With roots all over the east coast, Gimel ‘Young Guru’ Keaton was born and bred within the fabric that made Hip-Hop what it is today. Before he became a GRAMMY Award-winning engineer and one of the most influential figures in hip-hop production, he was a high school basketball star in Wilmington, Delaware with options to play at the collegiate level upon graduation. Keaton had an older cousin who attended Howard while he was in high school and after a trip to homecoming, he knew it was time to hang up his jersey and immerse himself in HBCU culture.

“I caught the bug. The feeling I got on their campus, seeing that many dynamic young black people all about their business was surreal.”

He often reflects on how his time at Howard University shaped his trajectory. As a member of the illustrious HBCU community, Young Guru embodies the transformative power that these institutions provide to young Black people. At Howard, he didn’t just hone his technical skills; he also cultivated a fierce sense of resilience and creativity that has propelled him through every challenge in his career.

“It’s the Howard mentality. No matter what problem you come across, you figure it out. I always say it like this: If you run up on a brick wall, Howard was the place where you learned how to break through the wall. Not getting through the wall is never an option. You called on your friends, had a support system, and just got shit done.”

Howard University, like many Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), is more than an academic institution; it’s a cultural sanctuary that equips Black students with the tools and resources they need to excel. Young Guru’s experience is a testament to how HBCUs empower students to break boundaries and “run through the brick wall” of societal expectations.

After leaving Howard, Guru went on to become one of Hip-Hop’s most revered sound engineers and DJs. Known for his work with Hip-Hop icon JAY-Z, Guru was dubbed “The Sound of New York,” and has also worked with legendary artists like Eminem, Mariah Carey, and Rihanna.

Keaton still works with JAY-Z today, but is excited about his current role as the Director of Roc Nation’s School of Music Technology, Entrepreneurship & Production at Long Island University Brooklyn. The school serves as a globally renowned destination for world-class education and exceptional career development, equipping its students with the tools needed to thrive in entertainment. As a pioneer in the Hip-Hop space, Keaton’s students are exposed to invaluable information and have access to state of the art facilities & technology.

“If a student tells me, ‘Hey Gu! I prefer working in FruityLoops, and then there’s a major job where I could work on a movie… But they team hiring works in pro tools.’ I don’t want my students to not be able to take that job. I want to expose them to Pro Tools, Logic, and Ableton, so they can feel comfortable stepping into any role.”

This school year, Keaton’s students are the first experience the all new, state of the art Dolby Atmos recording studios. Keaton curated a collection of high-end equipment to afford students the best opportunity to gain hands-on experience with analog tools that are utilized for many modern plugins.

“This new Dolby Atmos studio further solidifies our school’s place at the forefront of music education,” Guru said. “Every detail in the facility was methodically curated for our students and I’m excited for them to maximize their learning experience on campus and prepare to enter the workforce with an unprecedented advantage.”

In a world where barriers still exist for Black creatives, Young Guru’s story shines as a beacon of hope and possibility. His success is a reminder of the untapped potential that lies within HBCUs, where young Black minds are equipped to dream big and achieve greatness. These institutions serve as launchpads, providing the resources, support, and community that enable Black students to not only envision their futures but also to shape them boldly.

State Farm also actively supports Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through initiatives that enhance opportunities and promote community development. By sponsoring events like Billboard’s Hip Hop LIVE where they hosted HBCU owned businesses at the Good Neighbor Marketplace and other outreach efforts, State Farm not only helps increase access to opportunities, but also champions the cultural and social contributions of HBCUs in the world.

“I’m really happy for you. I’ma let you finish, but Joe Budden had the greatest mixtape run of all time” — or at least the rapper-turned-podcaster seems to think so.

On a recent episode of the always-entertaining Joe Budden Podcast, co-host Ice posed the question: “Who has the greatest mixtape discography?” Budden, to his credit, had a simple answer: “Oh, that’s easy. Me.”

Related

The Jersey City rapper famously took his career into his own hands by releasing his fan-favorite, critically acclaimed and brutally introspective Mood Muzik series after he was having issues with his label Def Jam at the time. The rest of the pod then started to debate other names, most notably the legendary mixtape runs by 50 Cent and Lil Wayne, who — like Budden — used mixtapes as a way to skirt the music-industry machine and up their stature among fans.

50 Cent turned his 2002 mixtape run into a deal with Dr. Dre and Eminem, while Wayne put himself into the GOAT conversation his Drought and Dedication mixtapes. All three rappers popularized the format of taking existing songs, whether they were rap records or R&B records, and making them their own. They also, along with Dipset, made original music on mixtapes a trend as well.

Once the dust settled, Budden settled on six names, proclaiming, “Yeah, I’m stopping it there: Jeezy, Wayne, 50, me, Fab and Kiss [Jadakiss].”

However, one name that wasn’t mentioned in the clip was Future, whose classic 56 Nights mixtape is Lil Wayne’s pick for greatest of all time.

As severe hurricanes continue to tear through parts of the American South, Taylor Swift is doing her part to help.

On Wednesday (Oct. 9), Feeding America announced that the pop star has donated $5 million to relief efforts serving Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina amid Hurricanes Helene and Milton. “This contribution will help communities rebuild and recover, providing essential food, clean water and supplies to people affected by these devastating storms,” reads a statement from CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot on the organization’s Instagram.

Related

“Together, we can make a real impact in supporting families as they navigate the challenges ahead,” the message continued. “Thank you, Taylor, for standing with us in the movement to end hunger and for helping communities in need.”

Billboard has reached out to Swift’s rep for comment.

The 14-time Grammy winner’s gesture comes less than two weeks after Helene made landfall in Florida on Sept. 26, reaching a record storm surge of 15 feet high and unleashing an unprecedented 40 trillion gallons of rain on the area, according to the Associated Press. The outlet estimates the death toll to be above 230 people.

Millions of Floridians are now evacuating the state as Milton barrels toward the Gulf. The second storm is expected to make landfall late Wednesday.

Swift’s donation marks the latest instance of the pop star giving away portions of her staggering net worth — newly estimated at $1.6 billion, making her the richest female musician — to charitable causes. The “Karma” artist has been supporting numerous food banks all throughout her global Eras Tour, and in December, she doled out $1 million to the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee after tornadoes ravaged the state.

Is It Better to Size Up or Down for Crocs?

Your Crocs size will depend on the style you’re looking at. Some Crocs, like the Crush Sandal, run bigger and you’ll want to size down for a snugger fit. The website does state what designs run larger, so you should likely size normally unless specified otherwise.
