This past July, the Desert Hearts crew road-tripped out to Arizona for their first edition of the festival outside California.
After being bounced around SoCal a bit after launching the festival near San Diego more than a decade ago, then moving to Riverside County in 2022, then to downtown Los Angeles in 2023, over the July 4 weekend, the team assembled in what seems to be a viable new home at the Playa Ponderosa ranch near Flagstaff, Arizona, throwing the festival in partnership with the Phoenix-based Walter Productions.
For this edition, Desert Hearts also went back to its origins, returning to its original single stage format for its 72 hours of house and techno. The lineup included Anja Schneider, Ardalan, Coco & Breezy, Rinzen, Life on Planets, Lubelski, Mary Droppinz, Walker & Royce and many more, including, of course, the Deserts Hearts founders/house DJs, each of whom played separately and then together for a closing set.
Hear this closing set exclusively below, along with sets from Desert Hearts’ Lee Reynolds, Los Angeles legend Doc Martin and club maven Öona Dahl.
In a statement posted to social media after the event, the Desert Hearts team wrote that their goal with the 2024 festival was “to return Desert Hearts to the quality of events we hosted at Los Coyotes Indian Reservation. The result surprised us and far surpassed anything we’d ever done!”
They continued by saying that “The last five years have been incredibly challenging for DH since losing our long-time home during the pandemic. Canceling the 2023 camping festival was the hardest thing we’ve had to do since founding Desert Hearts. But it was your resilience and unwavering support that kept us going.”
Keep it going yourself with these seven hours of music from the fest.

The most important celebration of the year for Mexicans is upon us. On the evening of Sept. 15, the night of the Grito will bring together families and friends in Mexico and abroad to celebrate the 259th anniversary of Mexico’s Independence.
Traditions, gastronomy and music won’t be missed in this important celebration that culminates the next day. Pozole, tacos, enchiladas and chiles en nogada are just some of the typical dishes to be tasted, accompanied by tequila or mezcal. The icing on the cake: music, a fundamental part of Mexican culture with mariachi, Sinaloan band and norteño music as its backbone.
The Independence Day celebration invariably begins with classic songs that set the mood, so you can’t miss songs like “México en la Piel,” “El Rey,” “Cucurrucucú Paloma” and “El Pastor” — even “El Sinaloense.” When it’s time to dance and bring out all that Mexican pride, there are classics like “El Mechón,” “La Boda del Huitlacoche,” “La Chona” and an inevitable choreography to the rhythm of “No Rompas Más.”
To close a Mexican night, nothing better than to do it to the rhythm of the accordion and the cadenced sounds of the norteñas, with titles such as Ramón Ayala y Sus Bravos del Norte‘s “Tragos Amargos,” Intocable‘s “Fuerte No Soy” and, of course, “Jefe de Jefes” by Los Tigres del Norte.
Billboard Español has prepared a list of 20 songs that can’t be missed on a very Mexican night.

Some of your favorite pop icons who got their start with Disney have reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. From Miley Cyrus to Britney Spears to Selena Gomez, keep watching to see who’s on the list!
Tetris Kelly:
Sabrina Carpenter just became the latest Disney star to have her album ‘Short N Sweet’ debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. And she’s not the only one. Here are some other Disney icons who have achieved the same feat.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, ‘Mickey Mouse Club’ alumni like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera and *NSYNC members JC Chasez and Justin Timberlake dominated the Billboard 200 chart with iconic albums, like ‘Christina Aguilera,’ ‘No Strings Attached’ and ‘Oops!…I Did It Again.’ ‘No Strings Attached’ and ‘Oops!…I Did It Again’ each sold more than 1 million copies in their first week. Britney, Christina and Justin continued to top the Billboard 200 in the mid-2000s with albums like ‘Back to Basics,’ ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds’ and ‘Circus.’ Another Disney queen who topped the Billboard 200 chart in the early ’00s: Hilary Duff. The ‘Lizzie McGuire’ star debuted at No. 1 with her album ‘Most Wanted’ in 2005. Toward the ends of the 2000s and into the 2010s, we saw several Disney stars debut atop the Billboard 200. Miley Cyrus was the first out of her peers to debut at No. 1 with the first two albums from her hit TV show ‘Hannah Montana.’ She continued her success on the Billboard 200 in 2008 with her next album ‘Breakout.’ The Jonas Brothers also debuted at No. 1 in 2008 with their album ‘A Little Bit Longer.’ The band of brothers followed that up with another No. 1 album in 2009 ‘Lines, Vines and Trying Times.’

A Timeline of Drake & Rick Ross’ Relationship: Collabs, Feuds & A Lost…
When asked if all it would take is a phone call between the former collaborators, Ross said he would maybe consider it. “I don’t know, it depend on how I feel. If I had Luc Belaire [champagne] already that morning, it may be a good day,” Ross told the former City Girl. “If I haven’t, you never f—ing know, you know what I’m saying? Because that’s how the game go, it’s just like that. F— ’em or whatever it is. But other than that? I ain’t losin’ no sleep over none of this sh–.”
He was even vaguer when discussing how his beef with the Toronto rapper went as far as it did. “Everybody doesn’t understand … the opportunities they have. Some n—as take sh– for granted. I don’t know what it is,” he said. “Everybody that’s been loyal to me or been down with me, you know, that’s something that I extend for the longevity of time.”
Adding, “I just think, when you’re not really from the streets and don’t really understand the way certain things work sometimes, you could take sh– for granted. Then two months later, sh– be lookin’ crazy for you. … This sh– could really just be a phone call. A lot of this sh– could be a misunderstanding, but when you jump out there? I don’t know, homie.”
They then talked about the unfortunate brawl backstage after Ross performed in Vancouver where he said the friends he usually travels with weren’t able to make the trip. “All my homies that [usually travel] with me, them n—as couldn’t come in ’cause of their felonies,” he told Miami. “If I would’ve just had two or three more of my homies with me, we would’ve stripped them n—as out their drawers and socks.”

HYBE, K-Pop Stocks Suffer Some of the Worst Declines in Brutal Week for Global Markets
The Billboard Global Music Index gained 3.2% to 1,800.75 to retake nearly two-thirds of the previous week’s losses. Last week, just three of the index’s 20 stocks were gainers. This week, 11 stocks finished in positive territory while nine lost value. The seven multi-sector companies — recorded music, publishing and agencies — had an average gain of 2.3%. Six streaming companies had an average gain of 2.6%.
Major indexes also posted gains after last week’s downturn. In the United States, the Nasdaq jumped 6.0% to 17,683.98 and the S&P 500 climbed 4.0% to 5,626.02. In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 rose 1.1% to 8,273.09. South Korea’s KOSPI composite index improved 1.2% to 2,575.41. China’s Shanghai Composite Index was an exception, dropping 2.2% to 2,704.09, its lowest close since Feb. 5, 2024.
Concert promoter Live Nation jumped 6.5% to $98.82 on Friday, its best closing price since $101.40 on May 22. CEO Michael Rapino gave investors a convincing narrative about Live Nation’s past, present and future at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology Conference on Tuesday (Sept. 10). Speaking about the potential for growth outside of the U.S., Rapino talked about taking the model used in Austin, where it built the Moody Center (in partnership with Oak View Group) and is getting “25-plus-percent return on capital.”
While the U.S. is filled with arenas because of basketball’s popularity, soccer-dominant Europe and South America don’t have the same infrastructure, Rapino explained. Growing a presence in those areas means building the venues, which provides better profits than being a venue operator. And it can be done more affordably than the cost of many arenas in the U.S. “We’re not building a billion-dollar Chase Center [the home of the Golden State Warriors basketball team in San Francisco],” Rapino said. “We’re building a $300 million-$400 million music venue, and we can get a great return on capital and expand the market. So that’s our greatest opportunity.”
After SiriusXM merged with Liberty Media’s tracking stock, Liberty SiriusXM, the new stock — also trading under the SIRI ticket — finished closed at $24.51, down 10.2%, after taking into account a 1-for-10 stock split. SiriusXM initiated post-merger trading at $25.25 and rose 2.6% on Tuesday before reaching a high of $29.05 on Wednesday. The company said the merger of SiriusXM and Liberty SiriusXM stocks was done to simplify the capital structure and support the company’s future growth.
In its first press release following the merger with Liberty SiriusXM tracking stock, SiriusXM provided updated free cash flow guidance of $1 billion for 2024, a $200 million drop from the guidance provided on Aug. 1. The $200 million change reflects about $70 million of closing costs and incremental interest and about $130 million related to “historical, year-to-date outflows at Liberty SiriusXM Holdings Inc. prior to the closing of the transaction.” The company left unchanged its guidance for revenue ($8.75 billion) and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization ($2.7 billion).

Ethan Slater and Lilly Jay are now legally divorced, TMZ reports.
The couple separated last year, after which the Broadway actor began dating his Wicked co-star Ariana Grande.

‘Wicked’ Sets Part 2 Release Date for 2025, Shares Sneak Peek Spotlighting Ariana Grande…
According to TMZ, Slater and his high school sweetheart — who share a young son — reached a settlement that was approved by a judge as of Thursday. Like all divorces in the state of New York, the terms of the agreement are sealed.
Billboard has reached out to Slater’s reps for confirmation.
The news comes about a year and two months after reports first emerged of the Broadway actor’s romance with the “Yes, And?” singer, whom he met on the set of Jon M. Chu’s Wicked films. A few days after news of his relationship with Grande surfaced, Slater filed to divorce Jay on July 26, 2023, after five years of marriage.
Meanwhile, Jay told Page Six at the time: “[Ariana’s] the story really. Not a girl’s girl. My family is just collateral damage.”
The following September, Grande filed to legally end her marriage to luxury realtor Dalton Gomez two years after they tied the knot, logging their date of separation as Feb. 20, 2023, in the court documents. The Victorious alum and Slater have since kept their romance low-key, though the couple have been seen out in public together a number of times. In April, Grande supported Slater at his final Broadway performance of Spamalot, and in June, the pair attended the Stanley Cup finals together.
As for the public scrutiny she’s faced for her relationship over the past year, the “7 Rings” star has remained diplomatic. Ahead of the release of her Billboard 200-topping album Eternal Sunshine, she acknowledged on The Zach Sang Show that the negative attention presented “an insatiable frustration, an inexplicable hellish feeling with watching people misunderstand the people you love, and you.”
Doja Cat aired out a lot grievances on her 2023 album Scarlet.
And in a new interview with Jack Harlow for Present Space, the “Paint the Town Red” rapper explained why tapping into her own fury was such an important part of her creative process. “Scarlet is a very, to put it simply, quite an angry project,” she said in the conversation published Thursday.

Fans React to Doja Cat & Joseph Quinn’s Years-in-the-Making Dating Rumors: ‘SHE GOT HIM…
“I think the point of that album was to showcase anger and how it processes through my mind, but also it’s about coming to your own defense and love,” Doja continued. “It’s sort of my ‘Why I oughta!’ moment of squaring up with everyone and defending myself, telling myself that I’m here for me, and not just for everybody else’s enjoyment.”
Released in September last year, Scarlet followed 2021’s hit-spawning Planet Her. It reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top Rap Albums chart.
While speaking to the “First Class” rapper, Doja also opened up about why she meticulously vets who she does and doesn’t follow on social media. “I think that as people, we are not ready, or not fully prepared, or fully evolved, as far as the Internet,” the Grammy winner said. “So when we see things on the Internet, there’s things that we think we’re in control of, that we’re not in control of. And when we see people having a good time, but we’re bed rotting, not having the best day, and we scroll and see something that’s not an artistic expression, but somebody doing something we wish we were doing, I think that we don’t take into account what that does to our brains.”
“I know that I just shouldn’t follow people who aren’t going to be creative, because that’s more mentally stimulating to me in a positive way, to follow people who are creating something new,” she continued. “It’s a safe haven for me as opposed to a place where I am watching people either pretend to be happy or genuinely be happy. I don’t want to use my phone in order to witness people’s happiness which I’d rather experience in reality.”

Following K-Pops making its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival last weekend (Sept. 7), fans across movies and music were buzzing about the all-star cameos joining stars like Anderson .Paak, actor-rapper Jonnie “Dumbfoundead” Park, former U-KISS member Kevin Woo, Community star Yvette Nicole Brown, and .Paak’s son Soul Rasheed.
With rumors about an upcoming acting opportunity for Vernon of SEVENTEEN since the singer-rapper was spotted filming in Seoul in May, Billboard can confirm the 26-year-old’s participation in K-Pops and share a first look.
Described by Anderson .Paak as “a fun, lighthearted film born from my love for music and inspired by my family while we were quarantined during the pandemic,” K-Pops is the comedy-musical telling the story of struggling musician BJ (.Paak), who attempts to revive his career by joining the house band of a K-pop competition program in South Korea, only to discovers that his long-lost son Tae Young (Rasheed) is a contestant vying for global superstardom. The nearly two-hour flick marks .Paak’s directorial debut for a tale of uniting people and cultures through entertainment while enlisting several major collaborators.
“Vernon brings an undeniable energy and talent to anything he does so I was thrilled to have him join our cast,” Anderson.Paak shares exclusively with Billboard. “He’s got a unique vibe that brings so much value to the dynamic world of K-pop that we explored in the film. On set, he was a natural. His ability to adapt and take direction while bringing his creativity and dedication really elevated the project. One of his jokes got a huge laugh from the audience during our world premiere, demonstrating just how effortless his talent is.”
The SEVENTEEN star isn’t the only big K-pop name joining the project. In his director’s statement shared with press at TIFF 2024, Anderson.Paak explains how he infused his style with several top artists representing the South Korean music industry.
“I also had the opportunity to work with iconic K-pop artists that I’ve been looking to collaborate with for years like Suga from BTS, Vernon from SEVENTEEN, Crush, The Rose, Jessi and G-Dragon,” he shared. “The fact that I get to do these collaborations in my directorial debut and bring these idols and artists into the world of K-Pops just brings a whole new level of excitement to the project.”
Billboard Hot 100 hit producer DemJointz also collaborated with .Paak to create original music for the film. The Silk Sonic star explained how the California beatmaker brought his experiences working with artists like Rihanna and Kanye West as well as K-pop chart-toppers like BTS and IVE — and even recently bringing both worlds together like on the “Dirty Dancing (Dem Jointz Remix)” where New Kids on the Block is joined by SEVENTEEN — as a perfect partner.
“I worked alongside the incredible DemJointz to create some original music based around the fictional competition show you see in the film,” .Paak added. “He was vital to the creation of these songs because he works heavily in the K-pop world and has churned out a lot of hits in that genre — he’s brilliant. We had a great time digging into my archive of music and building off of original ideas to utilize for the soundtrack.”
K-Pops is being sold by WME Independent, with Stampede Ventures, Live Nation Productions, Apeshit Films, EST Studios, and Big Dummie all working as production company partners. Get your first official look at Vernon in the film below:
