Sabrina Carpenter is repping her hometown in style.

During the pop superstar’s Short n’ Sweet Tour stop at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, Carpenter stepped onstage to perform “Espresso” in a bedazzled Philadelphia Phillies jersey with her name on the back, along with the fittingly cheeky number 69.

“Hometown show!!! I can’t believe I played the arena I grew up going to,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories before taking the stage. The singer grew up in Quakertown, Pa., which is about 40 miles north of Philadelphia. Carpenter’s Phillies jersey was also fitting, given that the team was up against the New York Mets in the National League Division Series — though the team ultimately lost a season-ending game on Wednesday (Oct. 9).

Earlier this week, Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet returned atop the Billboard 200, after it previously reigned at No. 1 for three consecutive weeks. Featuring hits like “Please Please Please,” “Espresso” and “Taste,” the LP is the Girl Meets World alum’s first No. 1 album and sold 362,000 equivalent album units in its first week.

Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet Tour will continue to travel across the U.S. and Canada through mid-November, with stops in Montreal, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas, Vancouver, Seattle, San Diego and Phoenix before winding down Nov. 15 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

RAYE shares five — well, technically six — things you didn’t know about “Genesis.,” including how many versions were made, how long it took to create and more!

RAYE:

Hi, I’m RAYE, and here are five things you didn’t know about my song “Genesis.” The first thing you didn’t know is probably that when we performed it at the Brits, the song was not done. It wasn’t even remotely done at all. And in fact, yeah, everyone was like, “Release it. Release it.” Because I really wanted to play it at the Brits, but it just wasn’t ready. And it continued to not be ready for several months. And as soon as it was ready, then we put it out. So it took me a long time to finish. The second thing you didn’t know about that song is it was originally just two parts. Third thing, it was written not with me in mind originally, and then I decided, actually, do you know what? I really love this song, and I really need to get this kind of emotion off my chest now. So we went with it as a RAYE song. The fourth thing you didn’t know about “Genesis.” is I re-recorded my vocals about 12 times in four different countries because I was so particular about how I wanted it to sound and feel. The fifth thing you maybe didn’t know about “Genesis.” is I wrote it on the road whilst I was on tour, so it took a long time, and I never put myself through such agony creating a song. It was really tricky, and I had to get to a point where I just said, stop now, because there was so many different versions, so many scrap verses, but I’m really proud of it. But once I put it out, also, actually, here’s another thing, once I put it out, I haven’t actually listened to it since we’ve put it out, except for playing it live. I was like, I’m done. It’s yours now. It’s not mine anymore. Hi, I’m RAYE and that was five things you didn’t know about “Genesis.” Six things you didn’t know about “Genesis.”! Thank you.

After interviewing Jaguar Wright, Piers Morgan has apologized to Beyonce and Jay-Z. Keep watching to see why.

Piers Morgan:

Well Jaguar Wright unexpectedly made several serious allegations about Jay-Z and Beyonce

Tetris Kelly:

After a guest on Piers Morgan made claims about Jay-Z and Beyonce in regards to Diddy, the powerful duo said not so fast, and now Piers is apologizing.

Piers Morgan:

We apologize to Jay-Z and Beyonce

Tetris Kelly:

Piers did this after hearing from their team.

Piers Morgan:

As I said in the moment, they were not present to respond or defend themselves, but now they have. Their lawyers contacted us to say that those claims are totally false and have no basis in fact and we’ve therefore complied with a legal request to cut them from the original interview.

Tetris Kelly:

Piers explained why his guest was invited on the show to begin with.

Piers Morgan:

The shocking allegations level that Sean “Diddy” Combs have burst the floodgates on salacious claims about an industry many people believe harbored a monster. Understandably the internet is ablaze with claims about these events and whether other powerful figures were involved, too. That’s why we invited her on to be interviewed. The people making these claims have an audience with, or without shows, like mine.

Tetris Kelly:

He ended by stating he doesn’t take the change lightly. We reached out to Jaguar for comment.

Piers Morgan:

Editing interviews is not something we do lightly on a show called “uncensored,” but like the proverbial cries of fire in a crowded theatre, there are legal limits on us, too.

Who knew Drake was an outdoorsman with a propensity for fly fishing?

The Toronto rapper will be featured on the Fall cover of The Drake: For Those Who Fish — a magazine dedicated to the great sport of fly fishing. The Denver-based mag unveiled the rapper on their cover via Instagram. He’s standing in the middle of a river dripped in fishing gear with a rod in his hand as he looks on in concentration.

The caption that accompanies the said cover photo is a rundown of what’s to expect in their upcoming issue and it reads: “Headed your way: The Babine, Boise, albies, musky, Champagne Papi, carp, Owyhee Canyonlands; backcountry Sierra, smallmouth; Susitna, South Carolina, sea-run brown trout, and the Atlantic salmon legacy of Bill Taylor.”

The comments are a mix of people being shocked and pure amusement. “We finally got THE drake on the drake magazine. what a time to be alive,” read one comment. Another ask, “Hold on is that the boy?” Others had new nicknames with one referring to Drake as “Bass Master Drizzy” and another calling him, “The Trout Papi.”

There aren’t too many details available just yet, but you can either purchase the issue in their store once it drops or you get a subscription for just $38. Founded in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in 1998, The Drake publishes quarterly with the 2024 Summer and Spring issues having been released already. You can cop them in the shop for $15.

We will be sure to give an update on the cover story once the issue arrives. You gotta tip your cap at the good folks over at The Drake. They must’ve been trying to get him on their cover for years.

With the 2024 presidential election just a month away, one person who will not be hitting the polls is Alabama Barker.

The 18-year-old daughter of Travis Barker went live on social media recently, where she revealed that while she is now old enough to vote, she doesn’t want to. “Not voting isn’t crazy in my opinion at all, because if I don’t feel like I have the exact education for what I’m voting for, how is it right to vote something I’m not completely educated on?” she explained in the livestream, seen by Billboard. “I could educate myself, but why would I do that if I genuinely don’t care? I’m just honest.”

She continued, “I don’t care to vote if I don’t know exactly what’s going on. I don’t think that’s wrong, and I completely stand on that and stand by it because, first of all, I just turned 18 and I never voted before. I’ve never voted. If I don’t want to vote, I don’t have to vote. If I don’t want to be in politics, I don’t have to be in politics.”

Alabama did note, however, that she does “have an opinion on what I feel is right because of what I’ve been seeing,” before adding that “one of the [candidates] is just a mess.” She did not reveal whether she was talking about Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump or Democratic candidate and current Vice President Kamala Harris.

While Alabama is not voting, a number of other public figures are. Most recently, Bruce Springsteen voiced his support for Harris, joining a list of other celebrities including Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Stevie Nicks, Cardi B, Jason Isbell, John Legend, Katy Perry and many more.

Meanwhile, Jason Aldean, Kid Rock, Kanye West and Sexyy Red are among the artists who are backing Trump in this year’s election.

As HBCU bands gear up to show off their talent, we take you through some of the most iconic performances and their impact. Presented by Capital One, keep watching to see more!

Tetris Kelly:

Southern University, Florida A&M, Howard University, and more are home to talented marching bands. We’re looking at how they celebrate the culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities around the country. HBCUs have celebrated their culture through music since the 1870s. But it wasn’t until Florida A&M’s band combined choreography and popular music that the bands started to reflect the groups we know and love today. Whether they’re performing at homecoming or halftime, they leave it all out on the field. They mix classic performances with creative covers of today’s hip-hop and R&B hits. Every year, the best of the best go head-to-head at the National Battle of the Bands, and this year, the schools brought their A-game – and rap beef – to the competition in Houston. Southern University’s Human Jukebox put their spin on Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” and Jackson State’s Sonic Boom of the South reimagined “BBL Drizzy” by Metro Boomin. The Battle of the Bands also featured live performances from Muni Long, Lecrae, Boosie Badazz, and more. Performances aren’t just limited to college events. HBCU bands have also brought their talents to the Super Bowl, Formula 1 races, and even the White House. But no matter where you see an HBCU band, you’ll be in for a treat. Dr. Dre is facing a $10 million lawsuit accusing him of a “malicious campaign of harassment” against a psychiatrist who says he served as a marriage counselor and mediator for the rapper and his ex-wife before and during their divorce.

In a case filed Wednesday (Oct. 9) in Los Angeles court, Dr. Charles J. Sophy claimed Dre (Andre Young) had subjected him to an “ongoing barrage of threats” after he had “worked diligently” to help him resolve his disputes with then-wife Nicole Young.

“Rather than treating the mediation process as an opportunity for healing, [Dre] decided to take his frustrations about the mediation out on Dr. Sophy — frustrations that manifested themselves in the form of a nearly year-long sustained campaign of late-night texts, threats of intimidation and violence, and homophobic rhetoric,” writes the doctor’s lawyer, Christopher Frost of the firm Frost LLP.

The lawsuit seeks a restraining order against further harassment, as well as monetary damages that the accuser’s attorneys say should total at least $10 million. A representative for Dr. Dre did not immediately return a request for comment.

Nicole Young filed for divorce from Dr. Dre in 2020 after 24 years of marriage, citing allegations of abusive behavior that Dre vehemently denied. After another 18 months of legal wrangling, the couple finalized their divorce in December 2021 with a $100 million settlement.

According to Sophy’s lawsuit, the pair engaged him in 2018 for a “joint psychotherapist-patient relationship” in which he provided therapy and marriage counseling. After the divorce case began, he says he continued to work with the couple, along with their attorneys, to mediate the terms of the dissolution.

In February 2023, Sophy claims that after months of no contact, Dre began harassing him via text message. According to an alleged screenshot included in the complaint, in the first such message, Dre told Sophy that he had been told something “disturbing” by an unnamed person, followed by a threat: “You’re going to have to pay for that.”

Over the two months following that first text, Sophy says Dre repeatedly sent him threatening texts, accusing the doctor of “ethical breaches” and threatening to report him to medical regulators. In one, he allegedly told Sophy, “you f—ed with the wrong one”; in another, Dre allegedly said he was “not playing, trust me.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Dre allegedly wrote in an April 2023 text, “until you explain to me why you tried to talk [an unnamed person] into saying negative things about me to the media.” Sophy says there is “no truth behind these baseless and far-fetched accusations” and that he tried to ignore the threats, but that he eventually began to fear for his safety.

Related

“Young, a prominent and powerful figure in the music industry with a well-documented history of violence and abuse, carried out a series of unlawful acts deliberately intended to threaten, intimidate, terrorize, and ultimately ruin Dr. Sophy personally and professionally,” the lawsuit reads.

The threats extended beyond text messages, according to the lawsuit. In one alleged incident, Sophy claims that fake FBI agents, hired by Dre, arrived at his gated community and told a security guard that they needed to “talk” with the doctor at his home.

“This incident, which occurred immediately after the initial texts were sent in February, was not a coincidence,” Sophy’s lawyers write. “It was a calculated, unlawful attempt … to threaten his physical safety and send the unmistakable message that Young can reach Dr. Sophy even in the sanctity of his home.”

The incident caused Sophy to “fear for his life” and “resort to extreme security measures,” including hiring private security and wearing a bulletproof vest. His lawyers say the “egregiousness” of Dre’s conduct eventually “compelled Dr. Sophy to seek redress and protection” in the courts.

“Dr. Sophy does not relish suing a former patient,” the doctor’s lawyers write. “Nobody should have to live in constant fear. But Dr. Sophy does — ironically, for no other reason than he tried to help Young to resolve his own family’s conflict.”

In technical terms, the lawsuit accuses Dre of harassment and intentional infliction of emotional distress, as well as violation of a California law prohibiting the use of force or threat of violence to interfere with someone’s civil rights. The lawsuit also claims that some of the threats were based on Sophy’s sexual orientation, meaning they violated a California hate crime statute.

Billboard has been around since 1894 and is still going strong. In the last couple years, Billboard has been featured as a category in Jeopardy! (more than once), popped up in the HBO show The Last of Us and gotten a shout out from Kendrick Lamar on the remix to Beyoncé’s “America Has a Problem.” On Wednesday (Oct. 9), our long-running media brand added a new feather to its cap, thanks to The New York Times Games.

Warning: Spoiler ahead.

NYT Connections, one of the most popular fixtures of the NYT Games app, featured Billboard as an answer. For those who don’t play, Connections shows the user a grid of 16 items (usually single words rendered in all caps) and challenges them to make connections between four sets of four items, with varying levels of difficulty. Naturally, some of the words have double meanings, and oftentimes the similarities are cleverly (if not diabolically) masked. It’s a stimulating, addictive and occasionally frustrating game.

Wednesday’s puzzle featured 16 items, of which “Billboard” was one. By linking it to “Pitchfork,” “Spin” and “Mojo,” the category was revealed as “music publications.” The category was assigned the color blue, meaning it was the second-trickiest category of the Oct. 9, 2024, puzzle. According to the in-app Connections Bot, 3% of players solved the blue category first – so if you were one of them, consider yourself part of the music media intelligentsia.

For our part, we’re honored to be included an answer in the Gray Lady’s marvelous (and highly successful) collection of games.
