Walmart has become a one-stop destination for sizzling sales including cookware deals on must-have kitchen appliances. Besides having a variety of cooking abilities, the compact toaster oven lets you choose the exact temperature you want depending on how toasty you’d like your lunch. Included is a non-stick grill plate that’s dishwasher safe for an easier cleanup. New chefs will even appreciate the included recipe book that’ll inspire your next meal.

You won’t have to worry about the air fryer leaving you with limited counter space either — it’s short in height and slim enough to place next to your smoothie blender without leaving your space feeling cluttered. Plus, since it aims to be eight cooking tools in one, you can say goodbye to ever needing a microwave again.

Verified Walmart reviewers also note that the kitchen tool “replaces so many things” as it “can do just about everything” including grill up steaks, burgers and vegetables during the colder months when you want to avoid going outside.

Though 14-time CMA Award winner Miranda Lambert is gearing up to release her upcoming Sept. 13 album, Postcards From Texas — her first under her new deal with Republic Records — she’s also learning to relax. In an interview on Bunnie XO‘s Dumb Blonde podcast that arrived Monday (Aug. 19), Lambert opened up about how she’s learning to balance work with living life.

The musician discussed how she and husband Brendan McLoughlin recently took two weeks off and traveled to Italy. “It was like a little panicky, but then once you settle into it, you really need to do it. You just don’t know you need to until you get the chance,” Lambert said.

The past year has been a hectic one for Lambert, who concluded her Las Vegas residency last year. Earlier this year, she also inked her new label deal and is preparing for her new album release.

She also revealed, “I reached a pretty high level of burnout last summer and I didn’t realize what it was until I was like, I think this is what we call burnout, from just not taking a break or a long enough one. Just a couple of days at a time just wasn’t enough for the amount of busyness, and so I feel like we have to learn to balance. It’s really hard when you’re so driven, to like relax into doing nothing. If you don’t recharge, it’s like you’re only operating at 50% anyway. Recharging is so important — it’s just hard to do.”

Lambert also noted the importance of living life to help inform her music. “As a creative, if you don’t let go and live your life, there’s nothing to write about,” she told Bunnie, who is married to Jelly Roll. “There’s no fuel. You know what I mean? If you just constantly are going to the next goal.”

Bunnie XO noted that Lambert has been in the music industry for almost 25 years, saying, “That’s a long time. So for you to just have reached burnout last year? You’re a savage. Like, you are an animal!”

Lambert responded, “It wasn’t the burnout where I’m like, ‘I’m quitting forever.’ It was just one of those moments — I’ve had those over the years. Honestly, a lot of it for musicians — as you know, because you’re on tour [with Jelly Roll] — is August, when you’re doing summer tours. By the time August comes, I’ve been hot all year. You’re playing outside. August is usually [when] everyone is like, ‘I don’t wanna tour anymore.’ But then you take a break and you’re like, ‘OK, I’m ready again.’”

Lambert also noted that at 40, she’s more interested in being selective in pursuing things that are beneficial. “You just go,’ I really just wanna go after the good s–t, and not deal with any of the other noise that doesn’t really matter in my life.’ And also spend my time, whether it be personal or professional, on things that really add to my life,” she shared. “I do love what I do for a living — that’s why I’ve done it for so long. But you can’t love it all the time.”

For Lambert, getting away often means being around her beloved animals and riding horses. “It’s taking moments and also chasing hobbies, and like, doing other forms of art. I need to just sit down. I don’t paint. I’m terrible at it, but I should try. I ride horses and like, I love that, and it’s physical, and it’s good for your mind and spirit. So taking time to do those things is important.”

She also noted that she goes antiquing, saying, “I go to this place called Round Top in Texas twice a year and its just miles and miles — the biggest flea market ever … my friends Junk Gypsy, they’re a lifestyle brand and are the staple of this whole vibe and they have a bed and breakfast called the Wander Inn. We go around in golf carts and drink wine and buy old s–t. It’s heaven.”

What were some of the most notable trends on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart in the first half of 2024?

Hit Songs Deconstructed, which provides compositional analytics for top 10 Hot 100 hits, has released its Mid-Year 2024 State of the Hot 100 Top 10 report.

Here are three takeaways from Hit Songs Deconstructed’s latest in-depth research.

Related

Hip-Hop Tops Pop

In the first six months of 2024, hip-hop was the most common primary genre in the Hot 100’s top 10, contributing to 33% of all top 10 hits. Pop followed closely at 31%, with country third at 16%.

“Hip-hop/rap’s popularity has been up-and-down over the past five years,” Hit Songs Deconstructed’s report notes. “After dropping to 23% in 2023, its lowest level since 2016, it rebounded to a level on par with 2021” by mid-year 2024.

Meanwhile, “pop has been in decline since 2021, until stabilizing in the first half of 2024.”

Leading the way for hip-hop through mid-year were Hot 100 No. 1s by Jack Harlow (“Lovin On Me”) and Kendrick Lamar, who notched two (“Like That,” with Future and Metro Boomin, and “Not Like Us”).

Billboard Hot 100 Top 10

Plus, “country’s presence in the top 10 remains solid after the genre’s number of hits nearly quadrupled last year,” per the report. Country’s mid-year share of 16% follows its 15% take for 2023 — after 4-5% showings in 2020-22. “Notably, several artists outside of the traditional country space released crossover hits in the genre,” in the first half of 2024, including Hot 100 leaders “Texas Hold ‘Em” by Beyoncé and “I Had Some Help” by Post Malone featuring Morgan Wallen.

Synths Lead, Acoustics Ascend

“Twenty-four prominent instruments shaped the sound of top 10 hits during the first half of 2024,” on the Hot 100, according to Hit Songs Deconstructed. Synth (non-bass) was the most represented, heard in 73% of entries.

Further, primarily acoustic drums/percussion continued to trend upward in the Hot 100’s top 10 in the first half of 2024, claiming their “highest level in nearly a decade,” the report reveals. “This is due in part to R&B/soul songs, where use jumped from 22% to 50% since 2023,” highlighted in part by SZA’s “Snooze” and “‘Saturn.”

Billboard Hot 100 Top 10

“Bells and chimes saw their first increase in four years, jumping from 1% to 9% in the first half of 2024,” per mid-year findings, with such hits including Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone and Hozier’s “Too Sweet.”

Additionally, “despite dropping off slightly in the first half of the year, use of acoustic guitar continues to be strong at 31% of songs, largely driven by country.”

(Less) Teamwork Makes the …

A quarter of Hot 100 top 10s during the first half of 2024 were crafted by five or more credited songwriters. However, “this number is notably down compared to years prior,” according to Hit Songs Deconstructed.

“Conversely, top 10 hits penned by a single songwriter have doubled since last year,” per the mid-year review. Among solo authors are Swift and Lamar, who scored two such Hot 100 top 10s each in the first six months of 2024 — the former’s “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys” and “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” and the latter’s “Not Like Us” and “Euphoria” — and Dolly Parton and Tracy Chapman, thanks, respectively, to reworkings of “Jolene” by Beyoncé and “Fast Car” by Luke Combs.

Billboard Hot 100 Top 10

Billie Eilish introduced her Hit Me Hard and Soft era with the 90s-inspired music video for “Lunch,” in which the superstar is seen dancing around in oversized, sporty attire as she muses the cheeky lyrics.

In a new installment of Vevo’s Footnotes, the 22-year-old singer gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at the colorful visual, noting that that clip was “an ode to 90’s music videos and all the videos I grew up loving. I’ve always loved the simplicity of performance takes and I didn’t want a lot going on in this video.”

She added that she was inspired by icons like Tupac, the Spice Girls and Green Day, before revealing that the hilariously unexpected challenge of filming the “Lunch” music video was, fittingly, eating the food. In the clip, she’s seen snacking on various foods including apples and cherries. “I had a giant table of food that I would take bites of and spit out throughout the day,” she recalled. “I should have done that from the beginning though, because at first I was actually eating everything and I was full immediately. It was kind of a lot, but worth it.”

Overall, the self-directed video was meant to be simple. “I didn’t want to make the video directly on the nose. I thought that the lyrics spoke for themselves and then the video would be an exciting visual to watch while you listen to the lyrics. I just wanted a classic, simple video,” she shared.

In other Billie news, the star was recently announced as Spotify‘s most streamed monthly artist, replacing The Weeknd at the summit. By passing the 100 million monthly listener ceiling in June 2024, she is the third and youngest artist to ever do so, following both The Weeknd and Taylor Swift.

Fans hoping to see James Taylor perform at the Democratic National Convention Monday (Aug. 19) were disappointed as the 76-year-old singer-songwriter was cut for time amid a lengthier-than-planned lineup of speakers — something he addressed in a statement posted to X Tuesday.

Related

In his message to fans, Taylor began by saying he was fully prepared to go on stage at the Chicago event, having had a “great rehearsal” prior to his scheduled performance time. Photos and videos on social media also show that he and his band had done a soundcheck shortly before he was cut.

“It was exciting to see and hear so many of the speakers at the opening night of the Democratic convention here in Chicago,” he wrote. “But it became clear, as the evening unfolded, that there wouldn’t be time for our ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ with cello and voices.”

The “Fire and Rain” musician went on to suggest that “maybe the organizers couldn’t anticipate the wild response from the floor of the United Center…” “Anyway, sorry to disappoint,” he added. “But a great and inspirational, quintessentially American moment. We were honored to be there…”

Taylor was originally announced as one of several performers slated to take the stage in support of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz’s 2024 presidential bid, along with Mickey Guyton and Jason Isbell, who did end up performing Monday night. A couple hours before Taylor posted his apologies, White House correspondent Christian Datoc shared the DNC’s statement on the last-minute cancelation on X.

“Because of the raucous applause interrupting speaker after speaker, we ultimately skipped elements of our program to ensure we could get to President Biden as quickly as possible so that he could speak directly to the American people,” it reads. “We are proud of the electric atmosphere in our convention hall and proud that our convention is showcasing the broad and diverse coalition behind the Harris-Walz ticket throughout the week on and off the stage.”

A Billboard staff writer on the scene also reports that staff did not make an announcement in the United Center arena — where the four-day political meeting is taking place this year — about the removal of Taylor’s set from the evenings lineup. Instead, the program moved straight along to Biden’s scheduled remarks, which closed out day one of the convention.

Taylor’s performance would’ve marked his fifth straight convention performance.

Before the POTUS took the podium, Hillary Clinton, first lady Jill Biden and Ashley Biden gave speeches, as did several representatives from South Carolina, Maryland, Texas, New York, Kentucky, Georgia and more states. Both Guyton and Isbell went on before New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke in the evening, and their performances are available to watch online. As of now, there’s no word on whether Taylor’s performance might be rescheduled for later in the convention.

Billboard exclusively reported that Patti LaBelle will perform on night two of the convention.

See James Taylor’s statement about being cut from the 2024 Democratic National Convention below:

Music is more globalized than ever, which means cultural preservation is also more pertinent now than at any point in human history. With Spicemas — also known as Grenada Carnival — the Spice Isle has cultivated and cared for what is arguably the purest and most authentic carnival in the Caribbean and its global diasporic hubs.

Founded to honor and celebrate the independence of Grenada and its sister islands of Carriacou and Petit Martinique (Feb. 7, 1974), Spicemas has taken place annually every August since 1981. This year marked the 50th anniversary of the festivities, and in the wake of Hurricane Beryl’s devastation, the healing, communal, and emancipatory powers of music were working at full capacity. From the metallic ping of steelpan to the high-octane drums of power soca, music was more than just a mere soundtrack to the road — it was the ultimate manifestation of the joy, grit, and autonomy of the Grenadian people.

Rarely was a non-Grenadian artist played, and when the music stopped — if it ever did — a series of harmonious chants quickly filled the air. For a people that have survived several phases of colonialization and the continued voyeuristic consumption of their culture, music reigned as one of their primary forms of not just resistance, but a deep reverence for the ability to continue successfully resisting.

Before the first blow of the conch shell summoned the revelers to the road, the bombastic live music showcases and competitions of Soca Monarch and Panorama proudly displayed the cross-generational appeal of Grenada’s soca and calypso scenes as they helped prepare the island for J’Ouvert morning. Perhaps the most striking element of the music of Spicemas 2024 was how fiercely Grenadians uplifted their own artists and music while still inviting foreigners and visitors to participate.

A DJ might shout out a Vincentian or Ghanaian flag, but he would never transition from Boyzie or Jab King to Burna Boy or Drake. Down to the curation of each DJ set, preservation and resistance reigned supreme. Yes, Spicemas, alongside other Caribbean carnivals, has seen its global profile rise year after year, but that doesn’t mean Grenadians are looking the other way and allowing their culture to become diluted, commodified and commercialized for those with no intrinsic connection to it.

Billboard’s attendance at Spicemas 2024 was sponsored by Industry 360, Mel &N Media and the Grenada Tourism Authority.

To illustrate the different ways music functioned throughout Grenada’s carnival weekend, here are five of the most memorable music moments from Spicemas 2024.

Legendary R&B singer Patti LaBelle will perform at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday (Aug. 20) in Chicago at the United Center, the Kamala Harris campaign confirms to Billboard.

The multiple-Grammy winner follows country singer Mickey Guyton and Americana artist Jason Isbell, who played the opening night (Aug. 19) of the four-day event. Longtime Democratic supporter and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer James Taylor was slated to perform, but was cut for time constraints and to allow President Joe Biden on stage earlier.

Among the speakers slated for the four-hour primetime slot Tuesday — under the theme A Bold Vision for America’s Future — are former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama; Harris’ husband, second gentleman Doug Emhoff; and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. (Harris’ VP pick, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, will speak Aug. 21). Tuesday’s host will be commentator Ana Navarro.

The “New Attitude” singer is no stranger to the DNC stage.  She performed a spine-tingling version of the Sam Cooke classic and civil rights anthem “A Change is Gonna Come” at the 2004 DNC.

She is also no stranger to Harris and Biden. LaBelle most recently performed on the White House South Lawn on June 10 for Biden’s Juneteenth concert.  In 2021, Biden signed a law that made June 19 (Juneteenth) a federal holiday, commemorating when the last enslaved people learned of their freedom in 1865. She was joined by Gladys Knight, Kirk Franklin, Anthony Hamilton, Doug E. Fresh, Brittney Spencer, Trombone Shorty, Charlie Wilson and other performers.

LaBelle is on her 8065 tour, so named for her age, 80, and her 65th year in music. The tour, which started in July, ends Dec. 18 in St. Petersburg, Fla.  When Billboard asked her earlier this year if she had any plans to retire, the icon answered, “No way. I’m going to keep on going. There’s no reason to stop unless you just can’t do anything anymore, right? And how can you retire from something you love?”

Singer-songwriter Koryn Hawthorne earns her third chart-topper on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay survey as “Look at God” rises to No. 1 on the list dated Aug. 24.

During the Aug. 9-15 tracking week, the song increased by 19% in plays at the format, according to Luminate.

The 26-year-old Hawthorne, who hails from Abbeville, La., co-authored “Look at God” with Isaiah Campbell, Christopher Gales, Charles Jenkins and Munson Steed. It’s the lead single from her studio set On God…, which entered Top Gospel Albums at its No. 6 peak in February, becoming her third top 10.

“When ‘Look at God’ first came to life, a lot of people around me didn’t see it as a standout hit compared to the other songs I’d made,” Hawthorne tells Billboard. “But deep down, I knew it would resonate with the audience. Seeing how it has blown up on social media has been unreal – so many stories, so many testimonies, so many people finding their own ‘Look at God’ moments.”

For Hawthorne, “Look at God” follows “Speak to Me,” which led Gospel Airplay for a week in February 2021. “Won’t He Do It,” her debut single, dominated Gospel Airplay for 19 weeks starting in April 2018. It also ruled the multimetric Hot Gospel Songs chart for 41 weeks beginning in March 2018 – the longest command by a female artist.

Hawthorne, who was a finalist on the eighth season of NBC’s The Voice in 2015, has charted another Gospel Airplay entry, as “Unstoppable” reached No. 5 in June 2019.
