The variations just keep on coming. On Monday (July 8), Taylor Swift dropped a new acoustic version of her The Tortured Poets Department song “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone. The hushed take on the single from Swift’s latest No. 1 album features the two singers trading vocals over a shimmery, unplugged arrangement.

The refresh is bundled with the original album version as well as bubbling remix by New York indie duo Cults. In an Instagram post on Tuesday morning (July 9) the band re-posted the striking cover image of the single featuring Swift modeling Posty’s signature face tats along with a message thanking the pop idol for roping them into her expansive universe.

“Honored to have been given the opportunity to remix legend @taylorswift song ‘Fortnight,’” they wrote.

The remix and unplugged take are the latest iterations of the double album that has been issued in a wide variety of physical variants, including multiple CD, vinyl, cassette and deluxe takes.

Swift recently added another accolade to her already bulging basked of records this week when TTPD hit its 11th consecutive and total week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (dated July 13), which ties the singer’s latest with both her 1989 and Fearless as her longest-leading No. 1 albums. TTPD is also the first album by a woman to spend 11 weeks in a row at No. 1 since the Whitney Houston-led soundtrack to The Bodyguard had a 13-straight week run together at No. 1 (of its 20 total nonconsecutive weeks at the top ) from December 1992 to March 1993.

Swift’s Eras Tour juggernaut marches on this week, with the first of two shows at the Stadion Letzigrund Zurich on Tuesday (July 9).

LONDON — Universal Music Group is to merge its historic Island and EMI label divisions as part of a widespread restructuring of the company’s U.K. business that will also see the launch of new Audience and Media Division to support artists and labels.

The announcement was made on Tuesday (July 9) by David Joseph, chairman and CEO Universal Music U.K. and Ireland, in an internal memo, which has been viewed by Billboard.

The reorganization of Universal Music’s U.K. operations follows changes the company made to its U.S. teams earlier this year with the formation of Interscope Capitol Labels Group and Republic Corps.

That structure is now being loosely mirrored in the United Kingdom with the creation of what Joseph called “two new powerhouse frontline label groups” — Island EMI Label Group, headed by Louis Bloom as president, and the newly formed Polydor Label Group, led by Ben Mortimer.

Both label groups will be home to multiple labels “all with creative autonomy,” said Joseph’s memo. Each department will also contain a team dedicated to supporting artists from the wider UMG family, said the Universal U.K. boss.

In line with the restructuring, which comes into effect Oct. 1, Universal is shuffling its executive ranks.

EMI Records co-president Jo Charrington has been appointed president of a “reimagined” U.K. arm of Capitol, which will sit within the wider Polydor Label Group, as will 0207 Def Jam, led by president Alec Boateng. (Billboard understands that Boateng’s brother and co-president of 2017 Def Jam Alex Boateng is to remain with Universal and will be given a job within an international division).

EMI Records’ other co-president, Rebecca Allen, will take up the role of president of Universal’s Audience and Media Division (AMD), a newly formed U.K.-based department dedicated to serving artists and labels that will have a global remit.

Joining Allen in the Audience and Media team will be Suzy Walby (media), Kate Wyn Jones (Audience and Digital Strategy) and data and strategic branch The Square insight team, led by Jack Fryer.

In his internal staff memo, Joseph said the “industry first” AMD team “will revolutionise how we deliver for our artists” and will become Universal U.K.’s largest division.

Not mentioned in the memo is the scale or number of job losses that will result from the changes, although it does state that the consultation period for staff whose roles are potentially at risk starts today and will continue until mid-September.

In the United Kingdom, it is a legal requirement that companies must follow so-called “collective consultation” rules if it is making 20 or more employees redundant within any 90-day period. Universal U.K. declined to comment on staff redundancies.

Not impacted by the changes are Laura Monks and Tom Lewis, who will continue in their current roles of Decca co-presidents, which will remain a stand-alone label. Hannah Neaves remains sole president of Universal Music Recordings.

“As a company, we must continue to be forward-looking, innovative, and bold. Developing artists now requires more creativity and patience than ever before,” said Joseph in his internal memo.

Joseph went on to say that the restructure would “strengthen our labels’ capabilities to deepen artist and fan connections.”

“We are committed to being the number one place for artists, fans and talent,” surmised the U.K. CEO. “I have an incredible appreciation for our team given what we have achieved in the past and what I know we will achieve in the future.”

It looks like Sabrina Carpenter’s reign on the Official U.K. Singles Chart with “Please Please Please” isn’t ending anytime soon.

Projections indicate she’ll hold the No. 1 spot for a fourth consecutive week. Meanwhile, her former chart-topper “Espresso” remains steady at No. 2 in the midweek update.

But watch out Sabrina — Shaboozey is shaking things up! His single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” – which famously interpolates J-Kwon’s 2004 smash “Tipsy” – is currently just over 1,000 chart units behind Carpenter, sitting pretty at No. 3.

With such a narrow gap, could Shaboozey finally sip his way to the top?

The track debuted at No. 41 on the Official Singles Chart, climbed to No. 16 the following week, and gave Shaboozey his first U.K. Top 10 single a week later when it rose to No. 6.

Meanwhile, British breakout star Myles Smith is aiming high with his track “Stargazing.” The single is set to leap two spots to No. 4, marking his highest chart position to date. Smith first appeared on the Official U.K. Singles Chart with his 2024 single “Solo,” which peaked at No. 69. His debut EP, You Promised A Lifetime, reached No. 30 on the Official Albums Downloads Chart.

Following their show-stopping headline slot at Glastonbury Festival, Coldplay’s latest track “feelslikeimfallinginlove” is on a sky-high trajectory, projected to reach a new peak in the top 20, landing at No. 12.

Meanwhile, Shady’s back (back again), as Eminem returns with his new track “Tobey” featuring Big Sean and Babytron, from his forthcoming album The Death of Slim Shady. “Tobey” is climbing a whopping 59 places to No. 17.

It follows the success of Eminem’s previous single “Houdini,” which marked his 11th U.K. No. 1 single in June 2024.

“Houdini” was the Detroit rapper’s first fully solo No. 1 since “Toy Soldiers” in 2005 and his first U.K. chart-topper since 2020’s “Godzilla,” featuring Juice WRLD.

Bebe Rexha is making it loud and clear that she will not tolerate disruptive behavior at her shows.

During her performance at the Palmesus Festival in Kristiansand, Norway, on July 6, Rexha had a fan ejected for attempting to throw an object at her on stage. This incident occurred nearly a year after she was hit in the face with a cell phone during a concert in New York City, which resulted in significant injuries.

In a video that has since gone viral, Rexha addressed the offending audience member who attempted to throw something on stage directly, saying, “If you hit me with something on stage right now, I’ll take you for everything you’ve f—ing got. Do not f—ing play with me right now. Out! Get the f–k out.”

This isn’t the first time Rexha has had to deal with unruly fans.

On June 1, she had multiple people removed from her concert in Green Bay, Wisconsin, after they threw objects at her on stage.

Fans videos show Rexha directing security to escort a fan out of the venue, saying, “Out, out. Or, if you wanna hit me in the face, I had to press charges for the other guy — I’d love to become richer.”

As fans cheered, she clarified: “I’m not inviting that, please. It was just a joke.”

The June 2023 incident was particularly severe. While performing at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City, Rexha was struck in the face by a cell phone thrown by a fan, which split her eyebrow and required stitches.

The assailant, Nicolas Malvagna, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of assault and harassment. He later accepted a plea deal that included 40 days of community service and a six-month order of protection.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office later reported that the assailant had said in his confession, “I was trying to see if I could hit her with the phone at the end of the show because it would be funny.”

Rexha later shared a pic of her bruised face with the caption, “I’m good.”

But fans throwing objects at artists isn’t limited to the “I’m A Mess” singer. Country star Morgan Wallen has had phones, a drink, and women’s underwear thrown at him while performing over the past year or so alone.

In June 2023, Pink was left shocked when a fan threw their mother’s ashes onto the stage during a performance at BST Hyde Park. Similarly, Cardi B had water thrown at her during a concert in August 2023.

Harry Styles and Kid Cudi have also faced similar disruptions, with Styles being hit in the eye by a Skittle during a 2022 show in Los Angeles and Kid Cudi cutting his Rolling Loud set short due to fans throwing bottles at him.

Kasabian are set to claim their seventh consecutive U.K. No. 1 album with their latest release, Happenings. The Leicester-formed rock band, consisting of Sergio Pizzorno, Chris Edwards, Ian Matthews, and Tim Carter, has taken an early lead in the race to top this week’s U.K. Official Albums Chart.

At the midweek mark, Happenings, the band’s eighth studio album, is outselling its closest competitor, Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department, by a margin of 2:1.

Kasabian have achieved six U.K. No. 1 albums throughout their career, with all but their first studio album hitting the top spot. The band has seen major success despite lineup changes, including the departure of lead vocalist Tom Meighan in 2020, after which lead songwriter and guitarist Pizzorno became the de facto frontman.

Meanwhile, the chart action is heating up with several other notable entries. Rising pop sensation Chappell Roan is set to make a splash with her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, aiming for a top 5 position.

Zach Bryan
Zach Bryan performs at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

On the country front, Zach Bryan’s fifth album, The Great American Bar Scene, is eyeing a debut at No. 15. The record features star-studded collaborations with Bruce Springsteen and John Mayer, alongside Bryan’s recent Top 40 hit “Pink Skies.” This could mark Bryan’s highest-charting debut in the U.K.

Previously, Bryan’s self-titled album reached No. 22 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart, while his third album, American Heartbreak, peaked at No. 1 on the Official Americana Chart in the U.K.

Rock band Enter Shikari’s Dancing On The Frontline is set to enter at No. 25. This will be the band’s ninth U.K. top 40 entry and comes after the St Albans-formed rock band snagged their first U.K. No. 1 with A Kiss for the Whole World in 2023.

Previously, the group scored top 10s with their 2007 debut album Take to the Skies (No. 4 peak), 2012’s A Flash Flood of Colour (No. 4), 2015’s The Mindsweep (No. 6), 2017’s The Spark (No. 5) and 2020’s Nothing Is True And Everything Is Possible (No. 2).

Indie rockers The Rifles return after an eight-year hiatus with Love Your Neighbour, which is on track to become their fifth Top 40 album, debuting at No. 26. The alternative-folk trio Fink is also making waves with Beauty In Your Wake, approaching their first-ever entry on the U.K. Official Albums Chart at No. 35.

As we approach the end of the week, all eyes will be on the U.K. Official Albums Chart to see if Kasabian can secure yet another No. 1 album to add to their list.

“Still fabulous!” That was one of the compliments overheard as fans filed out of the Hollywood Bowl following Patti LaBelle’s 8065 Tour kickoff on Sunday evening (July 7).

The numbers refer to LaBelle’s double celebration this year: her 80th birthday in May and 65-year career in entertainment. Those 65 years represent a pioneering, Grammy-winning music career that began in the early ‘60s as frontwoman for Patti Labelle & the Bluebelles, which evolved into the innovative trio LaBelle in the ‘70s with Nona Hendryx and the late Sarah Dash before LaBelle embarked on a solo career.

After opening her set with the emotion-packed “You Saved My Life,” LaBelle was definitely in her element as she kicked off her shoes not once but twice, cracked jokes (“Don’t get it twisted, I want my shoe back,” she told an audience member who’d caught one of them), busted a couple of dance moves with her singers and even did some of her trademark wing flexing. She also dedicated her own moving take on “If You Asked Me To” to Celine Dion (who covered the song after LaBelle in 1992).

LaBelle’s soaring vocals especially took center stage on the ballad “If Only You Knew” (a surprise as it wasn’t on the set list provided by the Bowl) — eliciting a standing ovation — and on show closer “Lady Marmalade.” For the latter, she chose several males from the audience to join her onstage and try their hand at singing the hit themselves, which met with audience cheers and laughter. Her nearly 90-minute performance also included classics such as “Love, Need and Want You,” “On My Own” (her duet with Michael McDonald) and “You Are My Friend.”

Upcoming stops on LaBelle’s 8065 junket include Sacramento (7/20), Phoenix (8/11) and Memphis (9/12). In between, she’s still busy with her successful food company, Patti’s Good Life, which recently added a new pancake and waffle mix to its menu. And coming soon: Patti LaBelle Wines. In an interview with Billboard prior to her Hollywood Bowl show, LaBelle reflected on her career, the new wave of R&B female artists and the R word: retirement.

What else can fans expect when they catch you on this 2024 tour circuit?

I’m very eclectic and very spontaneous. I will do a whole lot of different kinds of music. You never know what I might do, but it’s going to be nice. They [the shows] will be about who I am: a Bluebelles girl, a member of Labelle and then Patti LaBelle. It will be a reminder of what I’ve done all my life, you know? I just want to give a public thank you for all the years that people have been on my page with me. I can’t take that for granted because people can spend their money in other places, on other entertainers. But when they decide to see a Patti LaBelle show or to buy a Patti LaBelle record, I feel blessed.

Are you working on any new music?

I have been working on something for the last two years. But you know, sometimes when you record, of course, you’re going to start, and then you’re going to stop. Or something might come into play where you say, “Well, God, I have to stop this right now and then go back into recording again when I get good music.” I’m very picky. I want to do age-appropriate music for an 80-year young woman. I can’t do anything that makes me feel as if I’m stretching out on something that I shouldn’t be. So this is going to have to be something that’s well thought out. It’s hard for me to find good material that I want to put out. But I’m not going to stop. I hope that something might be out in the next six months.

Did you ever envision having a 65-year career? A lot of people can’t say that.

Because of my three sisters dying before they turned 50, I would always pray that I could make 50. When I did, it was like a miracle. God has given me grace and I’m still here. And to say that I’m still here at 80, still doing what I did when I was 20, 30 and 40 … it’s another blessing. Because you can’t always take for granted that you’re going to be here at the age of 80, still performing and still in your right mind. So every day I say, “Thank you God for another day.”

Nona Hendryx, Patti LaBelle and Gladys Knight attend Patti LaBelle’s Surprise 80th Birthday Celebration at The Glasshouse on May 23, 2024 in New York City.

Please describe the feeling that you get as you’re preparing to step on stage.

It’s a rush that I’ve gotten all my life. I’ve never, ever not been nervous before a show; I’m always petrified. Especially when you go out and see the crowd standing or saying your name and making you feel just wonderful. That doesn’t happen all the time for a lot of people, but it’s still happening with me. My band and I have our prayer before we go on. They continue to push me and keep me feeling good onstage for 75-90 minutes. I’m always saying to myself, “God, I wonder if they’re going to care for me tonight like they did years ago.” That’s always on my mind because I don’t want to become an afterthought, like “Why is she still singing?” I just don’t want to be that person. So every time I go out there, I’m praying that they [the audience] will accept me.

Where do you get your energy?

That’s God, girl. Like I said, I’ve outlived most of my family members but I still have a show to do tomorrow, the next night and the next night. So that’s energetic for me. Sometimes my body might be sore, but I’m going to go out there and do my thing. I don’t feel any pain when I’m performing, you know? And I thank God for that after a show. And that makes me feel great that I can still do it. I don’t know what 80 should feel like, so I don’t know if I feel 80. Maybe I feel about 40 inside [laughs]. For exercise, I have a pool that I get in. I can’t swim but I can kick. And I walk my dog. I move my body to do things that I know will help me.

What one life lesson have you embraced during your 80 years? And what one music career lesson do you still carry with you after 65 years?

For the first: to not hold grudges. In 80 years, you can have a lot of things that could set you off or put you in a place where you say, “I hate this. I hate that.” But I don’t have hate in my life. I’ve learned to forgive those who have put me in such awful positions that you can’t think a person will forgive someone for doing that. But I’ve always taken the high road. So the older I get, the more I’ve become a forgiver. Because I always say there must be a real reason why a person is hurting, why they’re so ugly inside. So those people you pray for, and I sometimes bring them closer to me. It’s not going to hurt you to be nice to someone who’s not nice to you.

And for the second: that not everyone is going to accept me. There have been times in my 65 years of being in show business when there’s been a lot of rejection for Patti LaBelle: for my music, for my shows, for my acting, for whatever I’ve done in life. I know that everybody’s not going to accept it; that I’m going to get no’s and sometimes I’ll get some yeses. All of that stuff has happened in my life and will continue to happen because everybody’s not going to love Patti LaBelle.

Is there one song that you still love to perform after all these years?

I enjoy “If Only You Knew.” It’s a hard song to sing, but I can still sing it. Those notes at the end: I’m amazed every time they come out. So that’s one of my favorites for that reason. And I haven’t changed the keys to [my] songs; they’re in the original keys.

What do you think about the new wave of female singer-songwriters in R&B right now?

There are a lot of great singers in young women such as Coco Jones and Victoria Monét. I continue to bless them on, honey. Don’t stop; don’t stop. And of course Beyoncé, my girl. I’m just happy for her period for everything she’s doing and will continue to do. I’m seeing a lot of goodness in these young ladies performing and selling the way they’re selling. When Beyoncé did her country album, I said, “You go, girl” because music is music. And she is from Texas and she’s holding them. I just want her to continue to do any type of music that she wants to do. Music doesn’t have a color; it doesn’t have a race. Music is music period.

When I was coming up, it [the industry climate] was nowhere near what it’s like now. It’s a much better place being a Black female performer; much more so than when we — Sarah, Nona, Cindy [Birdsong, a member of the Bluebelles] and I — were doing it at the time. So I’m very happy about the climate where Black women are singing anything they want. I wish it had been like that when we were coming up. But then again, if it was like that I might not appreciate what I have now as much as I do. We paid our dues.

Is the R word — retirement —  in your vocabulary?

How do you spell it? [laughs]. That’s not in my book. No way. I’m going to keep on going. There’s no reason to stop unless you just can’t do anything anymore, right? And how can you retire from something you love?

Pressure on Congress is heating up to pass legislation that will clean up the live events ticketing business following May’s passage of the Transparency In Charges for Key Events Ticketing (TICKET) Act in the House of Representatives.

The Fix the Tix Coalition, led by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), is calling for a nationwide day of action Tuesday (July 9) to encourage music fans, professionals and supporters to lobby their congressional representatives to pass meaningful legislation that will curb the growing problem of ticketing scams and deceptive practices in the live music business.

Related

NIVA and other members of the Fix the Tix coalition, which also includes the Recording Academy and the National Independent Talent Organization, are backing their own legislation — the Senate’s Fans First Act, supported by U.S. Senators John Cornyn (R-Texas), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) — while also supporting passage of the TICKET Act, which is sponsored by Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla) and Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-N.J.), among others.

Both bills would ban the use of speculative ticket listings on sites like StubHub and SeatGeek, require all-in-pricing before checkout and crack down on the use of deceptive websites and URLs. The Fans First Act would also require resellers to disclose seat locations on their resale listings, ban scalpers from using fan clubs to buy up some concert tickets and include greater consumer protections for canceled events.

Fix The Tix officials are asking fans, artists, and members of the music and performance communities to reach out to Congress on Tuesday to demand action by the end of 2024.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the TICKET Act in a 388-24 vote on May 15. The bill is currently before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

A case study conducted by Fix The Tix across five independent venues in the Washington, D.C., area shows that in 2024, 73,000 speculative tickets totaling an estimated $49 million have been listed on resale platforms. Speculative tickets are tickets that aren’t actually available for purchase but are sold to consumers at a considerable markup by sellers who promise to procure and deliver the tickets prior to the concert. These listings can often be misleading and lead to fraud.

“The Fix the Tix Day of Action is an important moment for all of us who believe in fair and transparent ticketing,” said Stephen Parker, executive director of NIVA, in a press release. “It’s a time to elevate the voices of fans and artists and harness their power as constituents. This is more than a one-day campaign. It’s a collective cry to protect the integrity of live performance. We urge Congress to listen to the voices of fans and artists and put comprehensive ticketing reform on their list of must-pass legislation in 2024, alongside other critical legislation such as FY 2025 Appropriations and the Farm Bill.”

Information on how to contact senators, members of Congress and the White House for tomorrow’s day of action can be found at fixthetix.org.

Lenny Kravitz loves his fans!

The superstar took to Instagram on Sunday (July 7) to share a sweet video in which he’s seen interacting with a fan in the front row of his concert at France’s Main Square Festival. In the clip, the young fan is seen crying from excitement in the crowd. Kravitz approaches her and climbs up on the bannister, before lifting her up and giving her a huge hug.

“Let love rule,” he captioned the heartwarming clip.

Kravitz is fresh off the release of his new album, Blue Electric Light, which arrived in May via Roxie Records/BMG. The project was written and recorded by Kravitz in his studio in the Bahamas, and features the previously-released cuts “Paralyzed,” “TK421” and “Human.” The collection, he told Jimmy Fallon for a late-night interview that aired in March, is about “celebration, life, humanity, sexuality, sensuality, spirituality.” Blue Electric Light is “just that vibration of love, of god, of spirit.”

He’s also been prioritizing his fitness regimen and spirituality lately — something he opened up about in his recent interview with Billboard. “Exercising and retaining my faith in God and God’s plan for me,” he said when asked about his values. “Exercising faith, patience, all the things that I learned growing up. If [something is] really yours and meant to be yours, you will have it — that takes faith, you know. All these virtues that I learned growing up – building on a strong foundation, no shortcuts – ring true to this day.”
