The all-star tribute album Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty makes a chart-topping debut, as the set enters at No. 1 on Billboard’s Compilation Albums chart (dated July 6). The 20-track Petty Country collection boasts country covers of tunes originally performed and written by Petty (who died in 2017), including “Runnin’ Down a Dream” (covered by Luke Combs), “I Should Have Known It” (Chris Stapleton, who was one of the first artists to come on board the project), “Southern Accents” (Dolly Parton), “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” (Lady A), “American Girl” (Dierks Bentley) and “I Won’t Back Down” (Brothers Osborne).

With almost 11,000 copies sold in the U.S. in the week ending June 27, Petty Country earns the biggest-selling week for any compilation album in well over a year, since A Philly Special Christmas shifted slightly more on the Jan. 7, 2023-dated chart. In terms of country music compilations, no compilation has sold as much as Petty Country in a single week in six years, since Now That’s What I Call Country, Volume 11, debuted with 12,000 copies on the June 23, 2018 chart.

Petty Country was issued on across four vinyl variants (all color variations), CD and digital download.

On the overall Billboard 200 albums chart, Petty Country debuts at No. 84, marking the first compilation to enter the tally in 2024.

Nike is ready to re-enter the 36 Chambers. More than two decades after first releasing the Wu-Tang “Killa Bees” Nike Dunk high-top sneakers, Wu-Tang fans are buzzing about a new collaboration between the sneaker giant and hip-hop group.

Nike has yet to officially announce the collaboration, but all signs point to a re-release. On Sunday, Nike shared what looks like a sneak peek of the Wu-Tang Clan collaboration, via the Nike Sportswear Instagram account.

The post, featuring black and yellow high-top Nike Dunks covered in bees, was shared on the Wu-Tang Clan’s social media accounts and has received over 1,000 comments and more than 70,000 likes.

The Wu-Tang x Nike Dunk High is expected to arrive sometime this fall, per Complex. The re-release would mark the 25th anniversary of the shoe.

Nike released just 36 pairs of the original Wu-Tang “Killa Bees” Nike Dunk High back in 1999. The original Wu-Tang Clan high-top Dunks are available on eBay for a whopping $45,000.

Rihanna recently went viral for hilariously rapping and dancing along to Glorilla‘s “TGIF” single — with A$AP Rocky‘s reaction being a meme in and of itself — and on Tuesday (July 2), Glo posted a DM from RiRi herself containing a “wild hypothetical” question.

“You got all summer sis!” the Fenty mogul wrote to the “Yeah Glo!” hitmaker, who shared the DM on the last slide of an Instagram carousel from her 2024 BET Awards afterparty. “I know dis wild hypothetical, but when the album drop?”

The superstar has been asked by fans the status of her ninth album basically since her eighth project Anti dropped in 2016, but R9‘s whereabouts continue to be a mystery. Earlier in June, Rihanna wore an “I’m Retired. This Is As Dressed Up As I Get.” T-shirt, and almost a week later, she clarified to Extra that it was just a fashion statement. “They didn’t read the second line. I’m not retired, I’m just retired from dressing up — it’s a lot of effort,” Rihanna said. The “Don’t Stop the Music” hitmaker also let Entertainment Tonight know where she’s at in the process with her album. “Yeah, I’m starting over. But I don’t want to neglect the songs that I have, so I actually want to go back and listen to stuff with new ears, with my new perspective and then see what applies and what I’m still in love with,” she said.

The CMG rapper has yet to release her debut album, but Glo released her mixtape Ehhthang Ehhthang in April, which reached No. 4 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 18 on the Billboard 200. She performed “TGIF” as well as “Yeah Glo!” and “Wannabe” with Megan Thee Stallion at the 2024 BET Awards on Sunday, where she was nominated for best female hip-hop artist and BET Her for “Yeah Glo!”

When New Orleans rapper B.G. came home in September after serving an 11-year sentence following his guilty plea on two counts of possession of a firearm and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, the rap community rejoiced. He’s the man responsible for entering the phrase “bling-bling” into the pop culture lexicon, after all.

But nearly a year later, the founding member of ’90s rap group Hot Boys is facing an unusual legal challenge: On Friday (June 28), a U.S. District Court judge in Louisiana ruled that the New Orleans rapper must provide the U.S. Probation Office with a copy of the lyrics to his upcoming songs for approval before producing or promoting them.

Related

The decision, handed down by U.S. district court judge Susie Morgan, came several months after B.G. (real name Christopher Dorsey) was arrested in March for performing at a Las Vegas concert alongside rapper Lil Boosie; apparently, B.G. needed prior permission from the court to associate with acts that also have felony convictions on their record, as Lil Boosie does. The probation officer in the case also cited B.G.’s work with Gucci Mane, another rapper/convicted felon with whom B.G. released a collaborative mixtape, Choppers & Bricks, in December.

B.G. was subsequently released on his own recognizance pending the judge’s decision. Shortly after, the rapper expressed his frustration in an Instagram post, saying in part, “It’s crazy how after paying my debt to society with 12 and a half years of my life I come home and still ain’t free…I been doing everything the right way and it seems like that ain’t enough.”

At a court hearing on June 18, B.G. and prosecutors confirmed they had reached a deal to modify the conditions of the rapper’s supervised release following his March arrest but “disagreed” over the prosecutors’ request to prohibit the rapper “from promoting and glorifying future gun violence/murder” in his music and at his concerts, according to the June 28 ruling.

“The Defendant argues that the additional condition proposed by the Government is an unconstitutional prior restraint of speech that is an overly broad condition of supervised release,” the ruling reads.

The judge ultimately found that the prosecutors’ request was “not sufficiently clear and specific to serve as a guide for the Defendant’s conduct and for those entrusted with his supervision,” instead imposing a special condition that B.G. provide the probation office “with a copy of the lyrics of any song he writes,” according to the ruling. All lyrics B.G. shares with the probation office will be passed to the U.S. government, which can then decide if his “conduct is inconsistent with the goals of rehabilitation,” the ruling continues.

A representative for B.G. did not immediately respond to Billboard‘s request for comment.

The ruling is certain to cause controversy at a time when the practice of lyrics being used against rappers in criminal court has become a hot-button issue. In November, a judge ruled that Young Thug‘s lyrics can be used during his YSL RICO case, saying that “the First Amendment is not on trial.” Bobby Shmurda and the late Drakeo the Ruler have also had their lyrics used against them in criminal cases. There have since have been laws passed and proposed on both the state and federal levels to stop the criminalization of rap lyrics; in September, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law a statute restricting the practice, while similar laws have been proposed in New York and the U.S. House of Representatives.

Jimin and Jung Kook are adventuring together! The BTS stars are set to release a new travel reality show together, titled Are You Sure?!, exclusively on Disney+.

The eight-part series, which was filmed in 2023 before the duo enlisted in the South Korean military, follows Jimin and Jung Kook as they travel to three iconic global destinations: New York state, USA; Jeju Island, South Korea; and Sapporo, Japan. Are You Sure?! “will take viewers on a fun-filled journey with Jimin and Jung Kook as they eat, shop, cook, camp, canoe, swim and road trip together,” according to a press release, and will “give a deeper look into Jimin and Jung Kook’s undeniable chemistry and endearing friendship as they bond over a variety of unforgettable moments throughout the trip immersing in different cultures, exploring various action-packed activities, and trying out local cuisines.”

The news comes soon after a cryptic teaser was posted to social media, featuring a slideshow of photos showing two band members exploring the outdoors together. In a November episode of Suchwita, the YouTube talk show hosted by BTS’ Suga, Jung Kook appeared as a guest and revealed that he and Jimin had once discussed filming their joint adventures across the globe.

“On a shoot with Jimin ages ago, he said it might be fun to do a travel variety show with me, and I agreed,” Jung Kook told Suga in the video, according to YouTube’s English translation. “But it didn’t end up going anywhere after that. Then suddenly, they set up a shoot.”

Are You Sure?! will be available to stream on Disney+ starting on August 8, with new episodes released every Thursday through September 19.

After growing up together in the music industry as two members of Fifth Harmony, both Normani and Camila Cabello released new albums last month: Normani’s debut album Dopamine and Cabello’s fourth project C,XOXO.

Bette Midler is going down the yellow brick road to justice.

The Grammy and Tony Award winner took to social media on Tuesday (July 2) to share a Wizard of Oz parody song that calls out several Supreme Court Justices, including Clarence Thomas, John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.

“Neil and Brett, you spiteful judges/ We gals are holding grudges/ Keep church and state apart/ You could be less disruptive, in all matters reproductive/ If you only had a heart,” she sings in the track, written by Eric Kornfeld and directed by Marc Shaiman.

“Thumbs down to autocracy!! #VoteBlue2024ProtectDemocracy,” she captioned the post.

Midler has long been an outspoken liberal and critic of Trump, but even she found herself in hot water in 2022 over making what some perceived as anti-trans comments on Twitter in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

At the time, the controversy ignited a discussion around the importance of using inclusive language, and the Grammy, Emmy and Tony winner insisted there was “no intention of anything exclusionary or transphobic” in her sentiments.

“The truth is, Democracy is slipping through our fingers! I’m all in on trying to save Democracy for ALL PEOPLE. We must unite, because, in case you haven’t been paying attention, divided we will definitely fall,” she noted at the time.

Lainey Wilson has been making country cool again on her headlining tour this summer, but in between tour stops and gearing up for the release of her album Whirlwind on Aug. 23, she’s also had the prestige of opening for rock band The Rolling Stones on the group’s The Hackney Diamonds Tour.

During a show on June 30 at Chicago’s Soldier Field, Wilson not only opened the show, but joined the band for a rendition of “Dead Flowers,” a song from The Stones’ 1971 album Sticky Fingers.

“I got to hang out with rockstars of all rockstars last night,” Wilson wrote on Instagram. Addressing The Rolling Stones, she added, “You are legendary to say the least. What a treat, what an honor, what a night!! Wow. 🤯🤘🌸”

The collab is also appropriate, given Wilson’s work on the recent Stoned Cold Country project, which features country artists performing various Stones’ classics, with Wilson taking on a rendition of one of the band’s most iconic songs, 1969’s “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”

Wilson previously told Billboard when Stoned Cold Country released, “The Rolling Stones are global music icons, from the musicianship to the swagger to the relatable perspective with songs like ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want.’ Man, if I haven’t had to learn that lesson time and time again. I know that feeling of resisting your fate, that struggle, but I also know that sense of pride and peace when you understand the tough times made way for something better. I try not to take myself too seriously — I’ve heard you can’t be great if you do — so I love the way the production builds into a light-hearted cathartic jam at the end. This song leaves me shaking my head, smiling at myself, and feeling grateful. And that’s what The Stones always did. They made you feel something, and they made you feel good.”

Wilson isn’t the only artist with country roots opening for The Rolling Stones on this tour; The War and Treaty, Tyler Childers and The Red Clay Strays also earned opening slots on the trek.
