Usher on the cover of Billboard, Beyoncé’s latest business venture, Snoop Dogg, T-Pain and Ice’s latest beef. Coco Jones takes us behind the photos, and an exclusive tour announcement. Welcome to Billboard News. I’m Tetris Kelly. It’s Wednesday, February 7th, and we’re kicking off the show with our brand-new cover star and Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner. It’s Usher, baby.

Gail Mitchell
You look very calm, cool and collected outside, but inside are you like… because it’s a matter of days at this point, right?

Usher
I’m trying my hardest not to overthink it. But it’s literally 12 to 15 minutes. If I can manage to impress the entire world, over 30 years of a career within 15 minutes, it’s, it’s a lot, you know. I’m definitely happy that I’m coming off a successful residency and kind of in the rhythm of it overall. Because otherwise, you know, you kind of have to restart and relive the moments, but every day going on that stage from Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, it just reminded me of what my music has meant, and how people feel about me, and how I feel about it. You know, after you know, years and years of doing this, you can grow tired, and just kind of grow frustrated, especially as music changes the standards of how we count, it changes the standard of what is hot, what’s not the standard of what’s cool, and what isn’t and all of those things can kind of get to your mind. And, you know, make you even question if you really want to continue to do it. But when I went to Vegas, it just made me excited about all of it all over again.

Teddy Swims notched his long overdue first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart with the soulful “Lose Control,” and to celebrate, he sat down with Billboard‘s Tetris Kelly to share the inspiration and lessons from making the track.

“I’m super grateful that person [that broke my heart],” he said of the song’s writing process. “I think it’s so great to know that that pain is necessary because […] you know, pain is paying the bills still. I’m trying to stop putting myself in positions to get hurt because you’ll always have to do that but they say the best revenge is success.”

And, no, despite his album name, I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy, he still hasn’t tried therapy. “I lied to everyone,” he said with a laugh. “But I am going to start. We’re finding that person currently.”

He added that he’s worried that therapy might “change the fabric of my being” that comes with the anxiety. “It’s just like, like my little tics and my little anxiety that I have, my own ways — which is not a right way to go about it. But I’ve always had these certain like — I’m comfortable in my existence and I’m terrified to change.”

Teddy Swims shares the story behind his Hot 100 hit “Lose Control,” his reaction to the song’s massive success, getting to meet Kelly Clarkson, working with stars such as Maren Morris and Meghan Trainor, why he named his debut album I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1), who he’d love to sing and work with in the future and more!

Teddy Swims:
Hey, y’all! Teddy Swims and you’re watching Billboard News.

Tetris Kelly:
It’s Tetris with Billboard News, and I’m hanging out with my fellow homie from Georgia, Teddy Swims.

Teddy Swims:
Hey, good to be back with you.

Tetris Kelly:
“Lose Control” Hot 100, top 10. Your first time in the top 10 on the chart, man. How’s that feel?

Teddy Swims:
It feels great. I’m just humbled and justified.

Tetris Kelly:
I mean, the promo tour for the song to me has been so impressive. You’ve been on The Kelly Clarkson Show, The Voice, Today show. How’s it been to, like, be in front all these audiences performing?

Teddy Swims:
Really amazing. I think, I think especially with with Kelly, like, that was just so cool to be in such a huge fan forever. You know, she was like, this whole season. She’s like, “Just give me Teddy Swims! Give me Teddy Swims.” And I was just so thrilled that she was like, such a fan, you know? And I was like, “Oh, my God.” I just … I didn’t, you know, I didn’t expect the kind of energy of her being such a fan. And, and it was such a huge thing.

Jelly Roll and Tori Kelly are set to appear on American Idol, where they will both serve as guest mentors and perform during season 22 of the long-running musical competition, Entertainment Tonight reports.

Singer-rapper-songwriter Jelly Roll was recently nominated for two Grammy Awards, for the all-genre best new artist accolade, as well as for best country duo/group performance for “Save Me” with his labelmate Lainey Wilson. In November, Jelly Roll picked up his first CMA Award win, for new artist of the year. The Billboard cover star also earned three consecutive No. 1 Country Airplay hits in 2023 with “Son of a Sinner,” “Need a Favor” and “Save Me.” Meanwhile, his collaboration with Jessie Murph, “Wild Ones,” is currently at No. 35 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

Of course, this isn’t Jelly Roll’s intro to Idol. Last year, he teamed with Wilson to perform “Save Me” on the American Idol finale. He also performed “Need a Favor” with Idol contestant Oliver Steele.

For Kelly, the upcoming appearance marks a homecoming of sorts, as Kelly launched her career in part through American Idol, making it through to Hollywood Week in season 9. She went on to release her debut EP Handmade Songs in 2012 and has stacked up hits with songs including “Nobody Love,” in addition to “Never Alone,” featuring Kirk Franklin.

In addition to top-tier mentors, this season’s contestants will see some sand and sun when the episodes featuring Jelly Roll and Tori Kelly tape in Ko Olina, Hawaii, as this year’s contestants perform seaside before judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, as well as host Ryan Seacrest.

American Idol‘s 22nd season will launch Feb. 18 on ABC.

Snoop Dogg and Master P are suing Walmart and Post Consumer Brands over allegations that the two huge companies sabotaged the rappers’ cereal brand with “underhanded dealing” and “diabolical actions.”

In a lawsuit filed Tuesday (Feb. 6), the rappers’ company, Broadus Foods, claimed that after they struck a partnership deal with Post, the company secretly “ensured that Snoop Cereal would not be available to consumers” or would “incur exorbitant costs that would eliminate any profit.”

Related

Broadus Foods, represented by prominent attorney Benjamin Crump, claims the move was payback after Snoop (Calvin Broadus) and Master P (Percy Miller) refused to sell their company to Post.

“Essentially, because Snoop Dogg and Master refused to sell Snoop Cereal in totality, Post entered [a] false arrangement where they could choke Broadus Foods out of the market, thereby preventing Snoop Cereal from being sold or produced by any competitor,” Crump wrote in Tuesday’s complaint.

The lawsuit also named Walmart as a defendant, saying the retail giant played a key role in “the most egregious example” of Post’s alleged wrongdoing: “Post essentially worked with Walmart to ensure that none of the boxes of Snoop Cereal would ever appear on the store shelves.”

In a response statement, a Walmart spokesperson told Billboard: “Walmart values our relationships with our suppliers, and we have a strong history of supporting entrepreneurs. Many factors affect the sales of any given product, including consumer demand, seasonality, and price to name a few. We will respond as appropriate with the Court once we are served with the complaint.”

A spokesperson for Post did not immediately return a request for comment on the lawsuit’s allegations.

According to Tuesday’s complaint, Snoop and Master P launched Broadus Foods and Snoop Cereal in 2022 in an effort to “add diversity to the food industry” and create a “legacy” that they could leave behind for their families. When they approached Post about a production and distribution partnership, they say the “breakfast juggernaut” attempted to buy the company outright, but that they refused.

Spurned from acquiring the upstart company, they claim Post agreed to a partnership whereby it would not only produce the products but also “treat Snoop Cereal as one of its own brands” and distribute it to major retailers, including Walmart, Target, Kroger and Amazon. But behind the scenes, they claim that Post was working to sabotage the new company.

“Unbeknownst to Broadus Foods, Post was not on board with their goals and dreams and had no intention of treating Snoop Cereal equally as its own brands,” Crump writes. “Instead, Post intended to only give appearances that they were following the Agreement.”

The worst case of such alleged mistreatment, according to the lawsuit, was the situation at Walmart. Snoop and Master P claim that Snoop Cereal initially sold well at the massive chain, but that Walmart’s system soon began to falsely show that the product was out of stock.

“However, upon further investigation by store employees, each of these stores had several boxes of Snoop Cereal in their stockrooms that were coded to not be put out on the store shelves,” the company’s lawyers write. “Unlike the other Post branded boxes of cereal around them, these Snoop Cereal boxes had been in the stockrooms for months without ever being made available to customers.”

In technical terms, the lawsuit claims that Post breached its agreements with and fiduciary duty to Broadus Foods, as well as defrauded the smaller company and made negligent misrepresentations. The case claims that Walmart committed so-called tortious interference by going along with Post’s scheme and that it aided and abetted Post in breaching its fiduciary duty. And the lawsuit claims that both companies committed civil conspiracy by working together.

Happy Lunar New Year! If you’re not familiar with Lunar New Year, which starts Feb. 9, the annual celebration — also known as Chinese New Year — follows the lunar calendar. It contains 354 days, versus the 365-day Gregorian calendar that you might be more familiar with.

2024 marks the Year of the Dragon, which symbolizes strength and good luck. The Chinese zodiac is separated into 12 astrological signs that are governed by different animals like the tiger, rat, snake, horse, ox, monkey and dragon. The astrological calendar repeats itself every 12 years, which means that there are a lot of people who were born in years that correspond with the dragon. (Of course, you don’t have to be born during a dragon year to get a gift.) In China, where Lunar New Year celebrations can last up to 16 days, the color red represents happiness, success, vitality, beauty and good luck, which is why most Lunar New Year products feature red coloring.

Chinese New Year Must Haves

To help you get prepared, we’ve put together a list of items to buy for Chinese New Year — comprised by Billboard’s Senior News Editor, Anna Chan.

Taylor Swift surprised her fans and the millions of TV viewers tuning in to the Grammys on Sunday night when she announced that she was releasing a brand-new album called The Tortured Poets Department on April 19. And now she’s got another surprise: The full track list has arrived, including some notable features.

Swift unveiled the track list Monday night (Feb. 5) on her social accounts, sharing new artwork for the project that seemingly includes 16 song titles and one bonus track called “The Manuscript.”

The biggest surprises of the track list reveal are the album’s two featured guests: Post Malone on album opener “Fortnight” and Florence + The Machine on “Florida!!!” Swift has never teamed up with either artist, though they’ve all expressed their admiration for one another in the past.

In Billboard‘s 2015 cover story with Florence Welch, the Florence + The Machine frontwoman revealed the life-changing advice she received from her friend and mutual fan Swift: “Taylor said that you must sing about what’s happening in your life.” Swift, in turn, gushed about Welch to Billboard. “What sets Florence apart? Everything. Every time I’ve been around her, she is the most magnetic person in the room — surrounded by people who are fascinated by the idea of being near her. But when she meets people, she pays them a warm compliment and immediately disarms them. There are very few people I’ve met in my life who are truly electric, and Florence is one of them.”

In an October interview with Howard Stern, Malone recalled running into Swift and the superstar throwing a compliment his way. “We were just passing by and she was like, ‘Oh my God! Nice to see you. “Better Now” is f—in’ amazing!’” Malone said Swift told him. “And I was like, ‘What? That’s f—in’ crazy, you’re a great f—in’ songwriter! Thank you so very much.’”

The Tortured Poets Department will be Swift’s first album of new material since October 2022’s Midnights, which won album of the year and best pop vocal album at Sunday night’s Grammys. She also put out (Taylor’s Version) re-recordings of Speak Now and 1989 in 2023, as she embarked on her career-spanning Eras Tour.

Mattel is honoring The Beatles with a one-of-a-kind, construction set celebrating the 60th anniversary of the band’s first performance on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Feb. 9 marks six decades since the legendary band played The Ed Sullivan Show for the very first time. The performance, which aired Feb. 9, 1964, became one of the most-watched moments in television history, garnering a record-breaking 73 million viewers.

Now, Beatles fans can build their own piece of “rock ‘n’ roll history” with this collectable building set celebrating the 60th anniversary of The Beatles’ first U.S. performance on the variety show.

Walmart

MEGA’s “Ladies and Gentlemen, The Beatles!” set ($79.99) is available in select Walmart stores, online at Walmart.com and on The Beatles’ official website.

The 681-piece set from MEGA, a Canadian toy company owned by Mattel, replicates the “arrows” stage that was specially made for the broadcast and includes four 2-inch posable micro-figures of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, complete with swappable instruments.

The Beatles’ performance on The Ed Sullivan Show launched the “British invasion” and birthed Beatlemania Stateside as the show received more than 50,000 ticket requests for the 728-seat studio. By comparison, Elvis Presley drove more than 7,000 ticket requests for his Ed Sullivan Show debut in 1957.

The Beatles appeared on the show three times in 1964 and several other times over the next four years but stopped performing live on the show in 1966, opting instead for pre-taped performances. The band’s final performance on The Ed Sullivan Show was on March 1, 1970.

After two decades as a band, Paramore won their first two Grammys on Sunday, taking home the awards for best rock album and best alternative music performance for This Is Why and its title track, respectively. To celebrate, the trio took to Instagram to thank fans for listening to their music.

Related

“First off, infinite thanks to our fans, our team and the voting academy for making This Is Why such a moment for us, 20 years into our career. Our band won two Grammys last night, sitting together in Zac’s living room, dressed in our regular clothes (yes, we saw the empty red carpet meme),” they began their message. “Turns out, our win for best rock album was a historic feat as we are the first female-fronted band to every take home a trophy for this category. Ridiculous yet true! It’s an honor for Paramore to be a small but constant reminder for people to keep pushing these rock and alternative spaces to be more inclusive.”

They added, “Some of you will know that This Is Why was our last album for our deal with Atlantic Records. To finish anything well is something to be proud of. Thank you to anyone who supported the ethos of Paramore as much as the music.”

In the caption, the band shared all of the credits for the album. See the post here.

Paramore released their sixth studio album, This Is Why, in February of last year, scoring their highest-charting album in nearly a decade with a No. 2 debut on the Billboard 200. The album was the band’s first since After Laughter was released in May 2017; it debuted and peaked at No. 6. The group’s last album to go higher was its self-titled 2013 release, which debuted at No. 1 on the April 27, 2013-dated list.
