D4vd talks about his music journey through his two EPs, connecting with fans through his music, going on tour with SZA, how he feels about his rapidly growing music career and more!

D4vd:
It was, like, at a press conference, everybody had their phones up playing the same clip. And it was, like, SZA sitting down saying, “The D4 emo music guy.” Oh, like that’s me. They’re talking about me! You know it’s so fire.

Hey, everybody! I’m d4vd, and you’re watching Billboard News.

Lyndsey Havens:
Hey, I’m Lyndsey Havens for Billboard News. And we are here with genre agnostic, I’m gonna say singer-songwriter D4vd. It’s so good to have you here.

D4vd:
Thank you for having me.

Lyndsey Havens:
You’ve been on quite the run this year.

D4vd:
Quite the sprint.

Lyndsey Havens:
“Sprint,” that’s a better word. So if you think about it just a few years ago, I’m picturing you recording vocals in your sister’s walk-in closet. And this year alone, sold-out tour, two EPs. If you had to describe what 2023 has been like for you, how could you put into words?

D4vd:
Absolutely “blessed roller coaster.” Like, front-row seat on a roller coaster. Honestly, and it goes this way, it goes that way, it goes every which way. It’s honestly just been a wild ride.

Lyndsey Havens:
Has there been one moment that has surprised you the most?

D4vd:
SZA tour honestly. Honestly, it was like, months and months of seeing her to this moment. And I was just completely like, starstruck. It wasn’t even real to me when I heard the news.

Welcome back to Billboard News on Tetris Kelly it’s Tuesday October 24, aka the day Britney released her memoir, I got my copy and I’m here to let you know some of the biggest shockers, Britney Spears’ book “The Woman In Me” is out and not only did we celebrate the release with the creators of her movie, we’re discussing some of the books big revelations, and that’s if I can put it down it’s just so good. Fans packed into the Grove last night for a screening of Brittany’s 2002 film ‘Crossroads’ that she requested.

Yeah she really wanted to help with releasing her book, all to kinda look back at her life and see how she was over protected and you know and see it in the context.

The movies creators Tamra Davidson and Anne Carli even spoke about how the label at the time wanted her to record music after Pepsi commercials and movie shoot days. And even Britney told them, “But I have to.”

Britney writes June would later send his second wife to the same asylum. She’s telling her story her way for more from the book hit Billboard.com.

Britney Spears could easily have a second career as an actor, says casting director Matthew Barry.

Earlier this week, Barry released Spears’ 2002 audition tape for the critically acclaimed film The Notebook, in which Spears is seen expertly delivering her lines and crying on que. Barry tells Billboard that Spears was “incredible” in her audition and, as Spears details in her memoir The Woman in Me, the decision came down to her and Rachel McAdams, who ultimately landed the role of Allie Hamilton opposite Ryan Gosling.

According to Barry, Spears took the audition very seriously and asked if she could work with him and his partner Nancy Green-Keyes prior to meeting with the director.

“She wanted to get it right,” says Barry. “We really worked with her to guide her since we’ve worked with [director] Nick Cassavetes. I’d worked with him for 15 years and knew everything he was looking for.”

She was the only actress to request additional time with Barry and his partner, who also saw Jessica Biel, Mandy Moore, Claire Danes, Scarlett Johansson, Kate Bosworth and Jamie King for the role.

Spears work ethic following her feature film debut in the Shonda Rhimes-penned Crossroads was “phenomenal,” says Barry. “She was so determined. The thing I was most impressed with is that she came with no entourage, not even a driver. She just came in on her own, sat in our office and went over the scenes.”

According to Barry and Spears’s memoir, which was released Tuesday (Oct. 24), she very much wanted the role despite her reservations about acting again. “I think Britney felt she was not as trained as an actress,” says Barry, who explains that he decided to release the video now – after more than 20 years – to give her a “little more positive reinforcement” and to “show her fans that she was really fantastic.”

When Spears got the opportunity to audition with Gosling, Barry says the two hit it out of the park. They ran their scenes together, and it wasn’t until afterwards when the casting directors and Cassavetes were informed they were on The Mickey Mouse Club together years earlier. “It was a great reunion,” says Barry. “Ryan was part of the [casting] process and he was OK with either Rachel or Britney.”

Spears wrote in her memoir that her music career is on an indefinite hiatus: “Pushing forward in my music career is not my focus at the moment. Right now it’s time for me to try to get my spiritual life in order, to pay attention to little things, to slow down.”

With a break from music, Barry says Spears could easily make a creative comeback through acting. Given her Instagram videos of dancing, Barry believes “she still wants to perform. She’s trying desperately to express herself.”

As a casting director, he says it’s his job to turn over every rock and reach out to pop stars like Spears in 2002 (or Taylor Swift who he reached out to earlier this year to star in another Cassavetes film – he says her team turned her down with the international tour approaching).

“I honestly believe [Spears] can [make it in acting],” says Barry. “Come work with me, I’ll whip her into [acting] shape in a month.”

On Monday (Oct. 23), Ty Dolla $ign announced a “multi stadium listening event” for his reported joint album with Kanye West.

The simple IG announcement — the lone post on Ty’s otherwise-wiped-clean account — has a black background with white text that shows the yen “Y” symbol with a dollar-sign symbol and the words “multi stadium listening event November 3rd.”

Billboard reported on Oct. 13 that Ye and Ty were shopping a joint project to distributors and that West would “make a decision soon.” The album would mark the first release for Ye since a series of antisemitic comments late last year, which led to Def Jam parent company Universal Music Group distancing from the artist. “Def Jam’s relationship with Ye as a recording artist, Def Jam’s partnership with the GOOD Music label venture and Ye’s merchandise agreement with Bravado all ended in 2021,” a label rep told Billboard at the time.

On Oct. 15, Billboard reported that West’s team was working to produce a concert in Italy to promote the collaborative album. The rapper was spotted in Italy with wife Bianca Censori and a stage was even built at RCF Arena in Reggio Emilia, but the plan appeared to have fizzled as of late last week, with Billboard Italy conceding via sources that it was “very unlikely” to move forward.

According to Ty’s post, it appears that the promo plan has pivoted to a “multi stadium listening event” on Nov. 3, though that could still potentially include international locations.

Ye and Ty last collaborated on “Junya Pt 2” from West’s 2021 album, Donda. Before that, they worked together on Ty Dolla $ign’s “Ego Death” (2020) and on West’s “Everything We Need” (2019), “Real Friends” (2016) and “Only One” (2014).

West is no stranger to massive listening events for his new albums, hosting three sessions at stadiums for Donda back in 2021: two in Atlanta and one in his native Chicago.

The Rolling Stones are careering to another U.K. No. 1 with Hackney Diamonds (via Polydor), the legendary British rock band’s 26th studio album.

According to data published by the Official Charts Company, the Stones’ new album is outselling the rest of the top 10 combined, posting north of 55,000 chart sales over the weekend. Nothing will stop these Rolling Stones from gathering a 14th U.K. No. 1.

Another leader would lift Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood up the all-time ladder, placing the Stones behind only the Beatles, with 15 U.K. No. 1 albums.

Featuring a starry lineup of collaborators that includes Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, former bass player Bill Wyman, and Beatle Paul McCartney, Hackney Diamonds is the Stones’ first new studio album or original material in 18 years.

Another reunited rock favorite, Blink-182, is forecast to open behind the Stones. The U.S. pop punk band’s ninth studio album One More Time… (Columbia) bows at No. 2 on the Official Chart Update, and should mark the trio’s sixth U.K. top 10. One More Time… reunites the classic lineup of guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge with bass player Mark Hoppus and drummer Travis Barker for the first time in almost a decade.

Completing an all-new top three on the Official Chart Update is Bombay Bicycle Club with My Big Day (MMMRecords). It’s set to arrive at No. 3 for what would be the English indie band’s fifth U.K. top 10 album and highest charting LP since 2014’s So Long, See You Tomorrow led the weekly chart.

Also eyeing top ten berths are releases from Mercury Prize-nominated British singer-songwriter Richard Hawley (Now Then: The Very Best Of at No. 4 via BMG); Scottish electronic soloist Barry Can’t Swim (When Will We Land? at No. 5 via Ninja Tune); Mercury Prize-winning R&B act Sampha (Lahai at No. 7 via Young); electronic veterans Pet Shop Boys (Relentless at No. 9 via Rhino); and legendary U.S. entertainer Cher (Christmas at No. 10 via Warner Records).

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published late Friday, Oct. 27.

A little more than a year after Garth Brooks’ popular The Garth Channel ended its six-year run at SiriusXM, the station is resurfacing on streaming audio platform TuneIn.

The Garth Channel is the third TuneIn channel announced as part of Brooks’ Sevens Radio Network, a suite of stations Brooks launched in June with The Big 615. The country music channel bowed simultaneously on more than 200 connected devices and vehicle platforms, according to TuneIn CEO Rich Stern, and is available to TuneIn’s more than 75 million global monthly users.

Related

In August, Sevens Radio Network bowed Tailgate Radio, hosted by sports commentator and producer Maria Taylor. While the station does not air the games — TuneIn provides access to live play-by-play from more than 100 Division 1 colleges and universities on other channels — Tailgate Radio plays pre- and post-game entertainment for sports fans.

Now, the Garth Channel, similar to its programming on SiriusXM, will feature Brooks’ favorite artists across different genres, as well as feature stories from Brooks. “The Garth Channel has always been my music, my heroes, my favorites. So, how do you make it better? You make it global for starters so the whole world can see how much I love music and where it comes from,” said Brooks in a statement. “More stories … from me and other artists. It seemed what people loved most on the Garth Channel were the stories. The new Garth Channel will now send out invitations for other artists to tell their stories behind the music and their careers.”

The Garth Channel will bow this fall — exact date still to be determined — and will broadcast from Brooks’ Friends in Low Places Bar & Honky Tonk  in Nashville. “You’re going to put Haggard right next to Beyoncé, Luke Combs right now to Ray Charles, Bruno Mars right next to the Statler Brothers. Great music works,” Brooks explained further on Monday’s (Oct. 23) Inside Studio G. Brooks’ songs will be interspersed with the other selections.

Though the official opening date for Friends in Low Places has not been announced, Brooks will host one of his dive bar concerts at the venue on Black Friday, Nov. 24. Fans could win free tickets to the intimate concert through The Big 615, with more than 1.7 million applications for tickets already registered, according to Brooks. Previous Dive Bar concert stops included Joe’s on Weed Street in Chicago, Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, California, and Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas. It’s named after Brooks’ 2019 duet of the same name, with Blake Shelton.

Though TuneIn did not provide specific numbers, Rich Stern said in a statement that Sevens Radio Network is already a success even with only two out of its seven stations on the air. “What we have seen already in terms of listener engagement and excitement on The BIG 615 and Tailgate is remarkable,” Stern said. “Simply put, people want as much Garth as they can have.”

Fans will get more Brooks this fall as the singer has announced plans to release a new limited series seven-CD box set, including a new album, exclusively through Bass Pro Shops starting Nov. 27. Brooks continues his Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Nov. 29.

Reports that singer Rihanna has inked a multi-year contract with Live Nation are “bogus” a source tells Billboard, pouring cold water on news that a live comeback for the superstar singer is imminent.

On Sunday, the London-based Daily Mirror reported that the singer was planning a major world tour through 2024 and 2025 as part of a 32 million pounds ($39 million) deal with Live Nation. On Monday (Oct. 23), ET also ran a report saying Rihanna was “planning a world tour for 2024/2025 after striking a deal with Live Nation.”

But a high-level source who would be involved in such the talks said the 32 million pounds figure sounds made up and noted that “no tour has been confirmed for Rihanna.”

While promoters like Live Nation, or their competitive rival AEG, would be more than happy to book and a promote a global Rihanna tour, the source says “Bitch Better Have My Money” singer hasn’t yet committed to any touring projects for 2024.

As well, Live Nation has not placed any holds on venues for a potential tour. Typically, when a promoter begins booking a tour for a major artist, they will call different venues on the tour route and ask venue bookers to reserve various dates on their calendar to accommodate different routing scenarios for an upcoming tour. If Rihanna and Live Nation were to sign a deal, it would likely take several months to hammer out a potential tour route.

The demand for a Rihanna tour, and new music, is arguably unparalleled. She is one of the most commercially successful artists of all time, with 14 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a record surpassed only by The Beatles and Mariah Carey. Her last album was 2016’s Anti and her last tour was the one that followed that year. It generated more than $110 million in sales worldwide, and since its final stop in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 27, 2016, she has not performed a commercial concert. She has since only performed three times, including at the Super Bowl halftime show in 2023 and the 2023 Oscars.

While a new global tour would surely net hundreds of millions in ticket sales and merchandise, Rihanna doesn’t exactly need that money. A March 10 story from the Wall Street Journal estimated Rihanna’s business empire to be worth $1.4 billion, thanks to the success of her record sales and cosmetic company Savage X Fenty, which she owns in partnership with luxury brand LVMH.

She also has a compelling reason not to want to hit the road – in August, she gave birth to her second child Riot Rose, whom she shares with rapper A$AP Rocky. The couple’s oldest son RZA was born in 2022.

The Kid LAROI, Jung Kook and Central Cee‘s “Too Much” tops this week’s new music poll.

Music fans voted in a poll published Friday (Oct. 20) on Billboard, choosing the trio’s song as their favorite new music release of the past week.

“Too Much” brought in more than 48% of the vote, beating out new music from Anitta, Blink-182, The Rolling Stones and more.

The team-up’s new tune was released this week ahead of LAROI’s debut full-length album, The First Time, which arrives next month.

The Kid LAROI, Jung Kook and Central Cee dropped a Ramez Silyan-directed music video alongside the new song. In the “Too Much” visual, the three stars appear on the covers of a fictional TOO MUCH magazine, and their mag covers come to life.

“If we had the chance and the time to spend, would you do it again? Would you do it again?” BTS member Jung Kook sings in the chorus. “Was it too much?”

Trailing behind “Too Much” on the poll is Anitta’s “Mil Veces,” with 25% of the vote, and Blink-182’s One More Time…, with 11% of the vote.
