A deadlocked jury prompted a mistrial Saturday (July 22) in the South Florida trial of rapper YNW Melly on charges that he murdered two of his friends five years ago.

The 12-member panel could not reach a unanimous verdict after three days of deliberations. Broward County prosecutors, who had been seeking the death penalty, will likely choose to retry the case with a new jury. A unanimous verdict is required to convict or acquit a defendant.

Broward Circuit Judge John Murphy twice asked the jurors to keep deliberating after they said they were deadlocked, but relented after they came back a third time.

Prosecutors say YNW Melly, whose legal name is Jamell Demons, shot Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas Jr. while they were all inside a Jeep. Williams and Thomas were both part of the YNW collective, known respectively as YNW Sakchaser and YNW Juvy.

Prosecutors said the shooting was part of a gang action, while defense attorneys said that claim lacks credibility because Demons and the victims were close friends.

According to prosecutors, Demons, Williams and Thomas were riding in a Jeep driven by Cortland Henry, known as YNW Bortlen, after a recording session in Fort Lauderdale on Oct. 26, 2018. They say Demons fatally shot Williams and Thomas. Henry is charged as an accomplice in the case and will be tried separately.

After killing Williams and Thomas, prosecutors said Demons and Henry drove the bodies to an area near the Everglades, where they shot at the back and passenger sides of Henry’s Jeep from the outside to make it look like Williams and Thomas had been the victims of a drive-by shooting.

But prosecutors say ballistics tests show the pair were shot from inside the Jeep.

Defense lawyers focused on the fact that the gun was never recovered. They also told jurors that YNW Melly had no apparent motive for the crime.

YNW Melly had his breakout in 2017 and went on to work with Kanye West on “Mixed Personalities,” which was released in January 2019, a month before Demons, 24, was arrested on murder charges.

Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne Pinnock talks about her first solo single “Don’t Say Love,” what fans can expect from her music, balancing her family and career, what’s next for Little Mix and more.

Leigh-Anne:
We will literally have an R&B jam.

Hi, it’s Leigh-Anne, and this is Billboard News.

Tetris Kelly:
It’s Tetris with Billboard News, and we’re feeling all pink and pretty today with Leigh-Anne. How are you doing?

Leigh-Anne:
I’m good. How are you?

Tetris Kelly:
I’m amazing. So happy you came all the way over the pond to hang out with us.

“Don’t Say Love” is a certified bop — love it. So tell me why you decided this was going to be your introduction to the public as a solo artist.

Leigh-Anne:
So yeah, “Don’t Say Love” up came in, like, the beginning of the process — always knew it was a banger. It kind of became obvious quite quickly that it needed to be the first single, and especially with the meaning of it. The idea of wanting to be loved wholeheartedly and like, like at 100%. I think it was very relatable to me, and I just thought, “You know what? Yeah, this needs to be the first one.”

Tetris Kelly:
And that’s such a relatable subject in general, I think, that touches people. So how’s your fan reaction been to the single?

Leigh-Anne:
It’s been incredible, it’s been better than I could have imagined. Just seeing people like doing their videos and singing to it and how happy it’s making people. Like, that’s what it’s all about. So yeah, it’s been really good.

Charles “Chuck” Martin Flood Jr., a longtime Nashville business manager who served as a founding owner at FBMM, has died, Billboard has learned. He was 78.

Flood was a prominent figure in Nashville for more than 40 years. Early in his career, Flood worked on the label side of the business, serving in A&R and national promotion roles at Capitol and Warner Bros. Records. In 1986, he founded Chuck Flood & Associates at his dining room table with the help of John Sayles and Betty Sanders. Just four years later, he teamed up with Frank Bumstead, Mary Ann McCready and John McCarthy to form the company that would become Flood, Bumstead, McCready & McCarthy (FBMM). The top-tier firm boasted a laundry list of A-list clients over the years, including such big names as Taylor Swift, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, Kelly Clarkson, Pearl Jam, Miranda Lambert, Mac Miller and Diplo.

Flood was a recurring honoree on Billboard‘s Top Business Managers list.

Born Sept. 12, 1944, in Waco, Texas, Flood attended Baylor University, where he met his wife of over five decades, Elizabeth “Beth” Flood, who preceded him in death in 2021. He spent the majority of his life in Nashville, where he and Elizabeth lived in the same home for more than 35 years.

Flood is survived by his sister, Catherine Flood Weiss of Austin; daughter Sarah Flood and husband Robert Ryland of Elgin, Texas; daughter Rachel Flood and husband Kristian Vatalaro of New York; and three grandchildren.

A celebration of life for both Chuck and Beth will be held in Nashville at a yet-to-be-determined date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Chuck’s name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) or Doctors Without Borders.

Leigh-Anne Pinnock is gearing up to release more solo music in the imminent future, and sat down with Billboard News to chat about what fans can expect from her upcoming LP, and why she chose to release “Don’t Say Love” as a first single.

“‘Don’t Say Love’ came in the beginning of the process, always knew it was a banger,” Pinnock tells Billboard News host Tetris Kelly. “It kind of became obvious quite quickly that it needed to be the first single, especially with the meaning of it, the idea of wanting to be love wholeheartedly at 100 percent, I think it was really relatable to me, and I just, ‘Yeah, this needs to be the first one.’”

As for what her future album may sounds like, Pinnock gave a few hints. “I’m an R&B girl. Everyone knows that I’m an old-school R&B girl,” she says, citing Jagged Edge, Dru Hill, Immature and Ginuwine as some of her favorite artists in the genre. “At the same time, though, I really do want to incorporate the other genres that I love, so we have some reggae stuff on there. I think I am a pop girl at heart, too, so I just feel like that stamp is always going to be in the mix.”

Though being a solo artist is a different experience from being in a girl group, the “Don’t Say Love” singer is taking it in stride. “I don’t have my sisters to fall back on, so I do really miss the sisterhood,” she notes. “[It also] feels so freeing and a sense of empowerment to stand on my own and know I’m doing this for me. It just feels like the right time. It feels so right to me.”

Leigh-Anne — as one third of Little Mix — earned two top 10 albums Billboard 200 with 2013’s DNA (No. 4) and 2014’s Salute (No. 6). Single “Black Magic” peaked at No. 67 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2015.
