Most Billboard readers have at least a rough idea of the top albums and songs of each year but may be less familiar with the top box-office hits from each year. Fortunately, boxofficemojo.com has that information for each year dating back to 1977.
So what do we learn scrolling through the list of top-grossing films for each year since Jimmy Carter became president and Elvis Presley died? One thing that comes across loud and clear is the degree to which sequels and franchises have come to dominate the marketplace. Just four of the year-end box-office champs were films that were not part of franchises (or did not spark a franchise or a reboot of some kind). Those four films that stand alone are E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Ghost and Titanic.
Star Wars is the top franchise on this recap, with six installments that have been the year’s top-grossing film. Batman is runner-up, with four installments that finished first for the year. Spider-Man is third, with three installments that yielded the year’s top box-office hit.
James Cameron and George Lucas are tied as the only directors who each directed three films that took the year-end crown. Tim Burton, Sam Raimi, Tony Scott, Steven Spielberg, Andrew Stanton and Robert Zemeckis are tied for second place, each having directed two year-end champs.
John Williams is far and away the top film scorer. The legendary composer scored 10 films that took the year-end box-office crown. Danny Elfman and Alan Silvestri have each scored films that finished first four times. (Hans Zimmer will join them if Top Gun: Maverick, on which he teamed with Harold Faltermeyer and Lady Gaga to provide the music, finishes first for the year.)
Lucas and Williams are the only director/composer team to collaborate on three year-end box-office champs. Six other such teams have collaborated on two year-end champs: Spielberg and Williams; Zemeckis and Silvestri; Scott and Faltermeyer; Cameron and James Horner; Burton and Elfman; and Stanton and Thomas Newman.
Top Gun: Maverick is far out front for 2022 to date, with a domestic (U.S. and Canada) gross of more than $664 million. But it’s too early to crown Maverick as the year’s top-grossing film. Sequels to two other films that were the year’s top box-office hit, Avatar and Black Panther, are due later this year. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled for release on Nov. 11. Avatar: The Way of Water is due Dec. 16. If you think that’s too late for a film to have a realistic chance of taking the box-office crown by Dec. 31, just remember last year, when a film that was released on Dec. 17 (Spider Man: No Way Home) grossed enough in the last two weeks of the year to finish No. 1 for the year.
Let’s scroll back through the films that had the most success at the domestic box office (that’s the U.S. and Canada) in each calendar year since 1977, when Annie debuted on Broadway, Laverne & Shirley was the top TV show and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours dominated the Billboard 200.

The beloved songsmith is immortalized with Paul Kelly Lane, which runs from Flinders Street to Pirie Street, behind the Adelaide Town Hall.
The project features a commemorative plaque, several artworks that light up and spotlights lyrics from Kelly’s deep catalog, which includes songs referencing places in the South Australia capital.
“I’m honored to be a part of this musical laneway project and I’m glad the lane is so close to the Adelaide Town Hall where I’ve had an association for over 50 years, from playing trumpet at school speech nights, attending concerts and, later on, doing my own shows,” he told guests last week at the formal unveiling.
Kelly, who was born and raised in the Adelaide suburb of Norwood, is no stranger to praise for his works and his advocacy on Indigenous issues.
He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2017 for “distinguished service to the performing arts and to the promotion of the national identity through contributions as a singer, songwriter and musician.”
The prolific singer, songwriter and author (his autobiography How to Make Gravy was published in 2010) was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1997, alongside Graeme Bell and the Bee Gees, who have their very own lane in Redcliffe, north of Brisbane.
And during the 2011 APRA Awards, Kelly was honored with the Ted Albert Award for outstanding services to Australian music, one of the highest accolades in the Australian music business.
Adelaide is the first, and only, designated UNESCO City of Music in Australia.
Boasting a population of 1.3 million, Adelaide last week hosted the annual Indie-Con gathering of the domestic independent music industry, and the 2022 AIR Awards, and now has four “City of Music” laneways, the others recognizing Sia Furler, Cold Chisel and No Fixed Address.
“Paul Kelly is one of our city’s greatest musicians and it is incredible to celebrate his extraordinary contribution to Adelaide’s musical heritage with the naming of this laneway,” says Adelaide Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor. “Paul’s songs and stories speak to the Australian identity and are loved across generations and so it is fitting for him to be recognized.”
Verschoor has said the late artists Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter will also be remembered with a permanent spot.

iCarly is back in the spotlight following the release of former castmember Jennette McCurdy‘s new memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died. The Nickelodeon series originally aired from 2007-12 and was rebooted last year.

A whole lot of prospective cowboys have taken a metaphorical horseback ride down the old town road. As of Aug. 10, the music video for Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’s hip-hop/country crossover smash “Old Town Road” has surpassed one billion views — the first project for either artist to hit that milestone.
In the video for Lil Nas’ breakout hit, the 23-year-old gallops around feeling like an outsider in his modern town — until he meets up with the “Achy Breaky Heart” country king himself. Together, they mosey into a community center filled with like-minded Wild Westerners and partake in some square dancing, while performing onstage in cowboy hats, boots and bedazzled, fringed shirts.
The “Industry Baby” rapper and Cyrus also made a longer version of the video called “Old Town Road (Official Movie),” which isn’t too far behind with nearly 650 million views at the time of publication. Originally released in 2018 as Lil Nas’ debut single, “Old Town Road” went on to obliterate the record for most weeks spent at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 by spending 19 weeks atop the chart.
Cyrus joined the project in spring 2019, shortly after “Old Town Road” was re-released as a single by Lil Nas’ label, Columbia Records. The country star has since said that Lil Nas is like family to him, meanwhile the “Industry Baby” artist told Billboard in 2019 that Cyrus gave some wise advice for whenever he gets overwhelmed by the immense fame he was skyrocketed into following “Old Town Road”: “When everything is moving too fast around you, just stand still.”

The show must go on! Machine Gun Kelly revealed via his Instagram Stories on Tuesday (Aug. 9) that Travis Barker will return to his Mainstream Sellout tour for the remaining concert dates despite the drummer’s health status.
“Against his doctor’s orders AND with a broken thumb, I convinced @travisbarker to come join us for the last couple days,” MGK wrote alongside a screenshot of a FaceTime call between the rockers. See the “Bloody Valentine” singer’s Instagram Story before it disappears here.
Barker hopped in on the excitement via Twitter, writing before the Aug. 10 concert in Missouri, “I’m impregnating the entire crowd at the @machinegunkelly show tonight.”

Back in June, Barker developed a severe case of pancreatitis following what seemed to be a routine endoscopy. “I went in for an endoscopy Monday feeling great,” Barker wrote on Instagram Stories a few days after news broke of the hospitalization. “But after dinner, I developed excruciating pain and have been hospitalized ever since.”
He said, “During the endoscopy, I had a very small polyp removed right in a very sensitive area, usually handled by specialists, which unfortunately damaged a critical pancreatic drainage tube. This resulted in severe life threatening pancreatitis.”
“I am so very very grateful that with intensive treatment I am currently much better,” wrote Barker, who was treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Wife Kourtney Kardashian also shared an update Saturday afternoon via Instagram Stories: “Oh what a scary and emotional week it has been. Our health is everything and sometimes we take for granted how quickly it can change … I am so grateful to God for healing my husband, for all of your prayers for him and for us, for the overwhelming outpouring of love and support. I am so touched and so appreciative. I am so thankful to our specialists, doctors, and nurses at Cedars Sinai for taking such wonderful care of my husband and me during our stay.”
