Shakira’s Laundry Service was a game-changer. The Colombian star’s first bilingual (Spanish and English) album not only became her best-selling set, but it also took her career to another level.
Going from Latin America’s sweetheart to a global pop star sensation, Laundry Service debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 (Dec. 1, 2001 chart), and it gave Shak her first hits on the Billboard Hot 100: “Whenever, Wherever” peaked at No. 6, “Underneath Your Clothes” peaked at No. 9 and “Objection (Tango)” landed on No. 55.
The special album also came with an image change for the singer/songwriter. Ditching her black hair and “good girl” look, Shakira debuted her golden blonde locks, which came with a bad-ass alter ego to pair perfectly with her anthems declaring independence from toxic relationships.
In honor of the album’s 20th anniversary, below are five of its best girl-power tracks:
“Objection (Tango)”
Shakira isn’t anyone’s second option, FYI. The title itself already tells you that the she’s putting her foot down and objecting to getting involved in a love triangle. “Got dizzy dancing tango,” she sings in the album’s opening track.
“Te dejo Madrid”
Looking for a fresh new start? This song is all about putting yourself first before any coward that doesn’t appreciate you. “I don’t want cowards that will make me suffer, I’d rather say goodbye.”
“Ready for the Good Times”
The title says it all. After being heartbroken and singing the “saddest songs,” Shakira is ready to move on.
“Poem to a Horse”
It’s Shakira’s version of saying “Boy, bye.” In the emotional track, she sings: “Nice to meet you but I gotta go my way … I’ll leave again ’cause I’ve been waiting in vain.”
“Rules”
Before getting into any boy drama, this time around Shakira is laying down the rules before linking up with someone in the first place.

A date has been set for a Verzuz battle between Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Three 6 Mafia.
The official Verzuz Instagram account revealed the news late Friday night (Nov. 12). The battle will go down live in Los Angeles in just a few weeks.
“IT’S THAT TIME,” read the battle announcement, featuring a poster with text overlaying a red brick wall. “Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (@btnhlive) vs Three 6 Mafia (@three6mafia) LIVE from Los Angeles!! Thursday, DECEMBER 2ND. Y’all ready!? #VERZUZ MORE DETAILS COMING SOON!”
“LETSSSS GOOOOOO,” Three 6 Mafia commented on Bone Thugs’ Instagram page, where they shared the Verzuz details.
The two rap groups originally planned to duke it out over Instagram Live back in April 2020, but it wasn’t branded as a Verzuz battle at the time and ultimately got postponed — until now.
The rescheduled face-off is the first Verzuz since Big Daddy Kane and KRS-One’s battle in October.
Jeff Wald, who served as a longtime manager of producer and boxing promoter, died on Friday (Nov. 12). He was 77.
Wald’s daughter, Traci Wald, confirmed his passing to The Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death was available.
“To the very end, he was laughing and fighting for the life he lived with epic proportions in every way,” Wald said in a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter. “He was surrounded by the family he loved so much and the music that was the soundtrack to his life of eternal optimism. We are heartbroken by the loss of our husband, father, friend and fierce advocate for women’s rights and justice for all.”
Wald was the long-time manager for Australian singer Helen Reddy, with whom he was married for 18 years. During the ’70s and ’80s, the producer, manager and boxing promoter represented through his management company an array of well-known stars including Donna Summer, Sylvester Stallone, George Carlin, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis, Roseanne Barr, Mike Tyson and Crosby, Stills and Nash.
In a 2011 interview with THR, Wald spoke about his years of drug addiction and at that time, more than two decades of sobriety. “I’m 25 years sober now. I never thought I could do that. And I don’t miss it,” he said. “I’m married now, 20 years, to the same person. I’m actually faithful. I’ve got a great kid; I pay attention. I’m present. I’ve got a good relationship with my older children. God bless them for being so tolerant.”
