From career milestones to new music releases to major announcements and those little important moments, Billboard editors highlight uplifting moments in Latin music. Here’s what happened in the Latin music world this week.
Peso Pluma Makes Fashion History
This week, Peso Pluma made history as the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s (CFDA) first Mexican ambassador for New York Fashion Week. Dressed in Willy Chavarría and styled by Anastasia Walker, the música Mexicana superstar made his official debut at the CFDA cocktail party hoisted in Rockefeller Center by CFDA Chairman Thom Browne, alongside designers Michael Kors and Anna Sui. Peso was joined in the celebration by his girlfriend and pop singer, Kenia OS, as well as Young Miko, who’s also an ambassador.
Trueno unveiled a cool career move this week, sharing on his Instagram that he’s a featured artist on Gorillaz‘s upcoming studio album, The Mountain. Set to release March 2026, the Argentine artist is a collaborator on the track “The Manifesto,” also featuring the late Proof. Additionally, Trueno will be joining the group on key dates of its The Mountain Tour set to kicks off Spring 2026 across the U.K. and Ireland. “It is an honor to be able to carry this beautiful responsibility, from La Boca to where I never imagined,” he expressed. Trueno and Gorillaz first shared stage at the 2022 Quilmes Rock Festival in Argentina, where the rapper joined the group for a freestyle of their hit single “Clint Eastwood.”
“This has always been a part of who I am, I like to give back,” Chiquis said in a new reel posted this week. In the clip, the Mexican-American singer talks about the importance of having compassion and helping her community, while also visiting a local supermarket and paying for the groceries of many strangers. “This is for my people. Those who dream, those who fight and don’t give up,” she captioned the post. “For my hardworking people, those who smile even when life is sometimes hard.” Her sweet gesture also served as a teaser of her upcoming single “Pa’ Mi Gente,” out Sept. 18.
A museum dedicated to Laura Pausini‘s prolific career will open its doors in Italy, becoming the first musesum dedicated to a music star in the country. Encouraged by her father to turn their family home into a hot spot for tourist and fans — and with the support of mayor Maria Diletta Beltrani and the entire municipality of Solarolo — the museum will showcase Pausini’s awards, memorable outfits, personal belongings, and objects donated by her fans. The exhibition will officially open on Sept. 13 and will be free of charge to members of her fan club. For more information, visit here.

Shenseea and Masicka entered the night as the most nominated artists (seven apiece), and both took home several trophies. Shenseea nearly swept the ceremony with five wins, including dancehall album of the year for Never Gets Late Here, which also earned the pop-dancehall princess her first solo Grammy nomination earlier this year. Masicka, who took home three awards with Shenseea thanks to their smash “Hit & Run” single, won a fourth trophy for reggae song of the year thanks to his featured turn on Romain Virgo’s “Been There Before.” Several other artists scored multiple victories, including Kartel (three), Virgo (three), Di Genius (three), Patrice Roberts (two) and Kes (two).
Other winners in competitive categories included Lila Iké, Lady Lava, Buju Banton, and Armanii, who recently performed at Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Live (Sept. 6). Lady Lava took home the inaugural zess-steam artist of the year award, and Dexta Daps took home the first-ever Caribbean R&B artist of the year honor.

From Vybz Kartel’s culture-quaking comeback to the global domination of Moliy, Silent Addy and Disco Neil’s “Shake It to the Max,” Caribbean music and culture have been running 2025. To commemorate an incredible year, the region’s biggest and buzziest stars descended upon Kings Theater in Brooklyn, N.Y. for the third annual Caribbean Music Awards (Aug. 28).
Hosted by Majah Hype, the “King of Caribbean Comedy,” the night featured special performances from Machel Montano, Elephant Man, Ding Dong, Lady Lava, Full Blown, Maureen, and more. With reggae, dancehall, calypso, konpa and soca all given spotlights, the breadth of West Indian music was on full display. Additional celebrity appearances included Shenseea, Spice, Dexta Daps, Serani, Buju Banton, Patrice Roberts, Alison Hinds, Lyrikal, and Armanii, who recently performed at Billboard‘s annual R&B/Hip-Hop Live concert on Sept. 6. Inside the theater, attendees were treated to a litany of West Indian iconoclasts, including live steelpan bands, blinged-out Carnival costumes, and Jamaican and Haitian beef patties.
In addition to over 40 competitive awards, several pillars of Caribbean music were honored for their contributions to the culture. Bounty Killer took home the lifetime achievement award, Sizzla earned the humanitarian award, and Busta Rhymes was honored with the elite icon award. Additional special honorees included Austin “Super Blue” Lyons (calypso honors), Kerwin Du Bois (producer honor), Carimi (legacy award) and Shirley Ann Cyril-Mayers (gospel honors).
This year’s Caribbean Music Awards aired Sept. 12 on BET, marking the very first time the ceremony has been televised. On the red carpet, Billboard hosted a live stream co-hosted by staff writer Kyle Denis and Love Island USA’s Chelley Bissainthe.

Although Shenseea dominated the night with five wins, including dancehall album, collaboration and song of the year, the third annual Caribbean Music Awards certainly spread the wealth. Hosted by Majah Hype at Brooklyn’s King Theatre (Aug. 28), this year’s Caribbean Music Awards honored performers and works across reggae, dancehall, soca, R&B, gospel, bouyon, zess-steam, konpa and more, highlighting the myriad styles that have helped Caribbean music and culture remain a global force.
Thanks to his collaborations with Shenseea (“Hit & Run”) and Romain Virgo (“Been There Before”), Masicka was the second most-awarded artist of the night with four trophies. Nearly every artist who earned at least three nominations took home something, except for Nailah Blackman, Chronic Law, Kranium, Bunji Garlin, Problem Child, Trinidad Killa and Jada Kingdom — all of whom were completely shut out. Notably, all three of last year’s female artist of the year winners repeated in their respective categories, with Shenseea taking home the dancehall honor, Lila Iké snagging the reggae award and Patrice Roberts winning the soca trophy for a third consecutive year.
In addition to over 40 competitive awards, several Caribbean music legends were honored for their towering contributions to the culture. DJ Khaled and Swizz Beatz honored Bounty Killer with the lifetime achievement award, Mýa presented Sizzla with the humanitarian award, and Buju Banton celebrated Busta Rhymes with the elite icon award. Additional special honorees included Austin “Super Blue” Lyons (calypso honors), Kerwin Du Bois (producer honor), Carimi (legacy award) and Shirley Ann Cyril-Mayers (gospel honors).
Here are six of the biggest snubs and surprises from the 2025 Caribbean Music Awards.

From reggae legends like Sizzla and Buju Banton to innovative breakout stars like Lady Lava and dancehall upstarts such as Armanii, the third annual Caribbean Music Awards certainly weren’t lacking in star power and memorable performances. The Aug. 28 ceremony, which unfolded at Brooklyn’s Kings Theater ahead of a BET telecast on Sept. 12, celebrated the biggest artists and buzziest records across Caribbean music over the past year, with over 40 categories honoring genres like reggae, dancehall, soca, zess-steam, konpa, calypso, gospel and R&B.
Shenseea, who tied Masicka as this year’s most-nominated artist (seven apiece), was the night’s biggest winner, with five victories, including dancehall album, song and collaboration of the year. King of Dancehall Vybz Kartel, who kicked off 2025 with a revelatory Billboard cover story, took home three awards, including male dancehall artist of the year and music event of the year for his seismic Kingston-conquering Freedom Street concert last December. Lady Lava, whose “Ring Finger” earned an effusive co-sign from Cardi B, won the inaugural zess-steam artist of the year award, and Yung Bredda and Armanii took home this year’s impact awards for soca and dancehall, respectively.
Outside of the hardware, this year’s ceremony also featured a slew of roof-raising performances from acts such as Elephant Man, Full Blown, Lady Lava, Lila Iké, Romain Virgo and more. Although Spice and Kes were named performers of the year for dancehall and soca, respectively, neither act graced the stage. Additionally, none of the night’s special honorees (Busta Rhymes, Bounty Killer, Sizzla, Kerwin Du Bois, Shirley Ann Cyril-Mayers, Austin “Super Blue” Lyons and Carimi) performed, save for an impromptu freestyle from Bounty near the end of his lifetime achievement award acceptance speech. All of their on-stage absences were certainly felt, but this year’s Caribbean Music Awards featured a lineup that pleased music lovers across generations and genres.
Here’s Billboard’s ranking of every performance at the 2025 Caribbean Music Awards.
Sphere Entertainment stock rose 19.3% to $58.33 this week, marking its fourth consecutive weekly gain and the largest improvement in that month-long run. Sphere shares have risen an astounding 46.3% in the last four weeks. The stock reached an all-time high of $58.71 on Friday (Sept. 12).
Sphere’s latest offering, a revamped The Wizard of Oz, has won over both audiences and Wall Street analysts. As Billboardnoted on Wednesday (Sept. 10), numerous analysts have raised forecasts in the wake of a stellar debut and strong ticket sales. The $2.3 billion venue requires a high level of utilization to be profitable, meaning Sphere must squeeze in film showings when it’s not hosting sold-out concerts by the likes of Backstreet Boys and The Eagles. Early results suggest the revamped The Wizard of Oz, which cost upwards of $100 million, is performing better than Sphere’s two previous films, Postcards from Earth and V-U2.

Cardin and iHeartRadio host Shannon Burns got on a video call with The Beaches to deliver the news on Aug, 29 — the same day the band was celebrating the release of its brand new album, No Hard Feelings.
“I just wanted to congratulate you and tell you that I love you guys and I think your music is so amazing,” Cardin told the band, who gathered together to hear the news. “I’m just rooting for you always, always, always.”
After spending the summer having their songs screamed back at them by tens of thousands of fans at Coachella, Osheaga and Pukkelpop in Belgium, the Toronto band has released its critically acclaimed new album, No Hard Feelings.
The tour will next bring the band to its most monumental concert so far, with the group slated to play its largest ever headlining show at its hometown Scotiabank Arena on Nov. 6.
Amidst that whirlwind, The Beaches will mark yet another career milestone after being named Women of the Year at Billboard Canada Women in Music 2025 — the first time Billboard’s prestigious flagship award will go to a group rather than a single artist.
The entire band — Jordan Miller (lead vocals, bass), Kylie Miller (guitar), Leandra Earl (guitar, keys) and Eliza Enman-McDaniel (drums) — will accept the honour at Billboard Canada Women in Music on Oct. 1 at Rebel in Toronto.
“We’re so honoured to be celebrated alongside so many incredible women who have done so much for the music industry,” says Kylie Miller in a new Billboard Canada cover story.
“Our team is built around women working together, so anytime we get to celebrate communities of women uplifting one another, it feels amazing,” adds her sister Jordan.

Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol Crash Drake’s Toronto House in Nirvanna the Band the Show The Movie
Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol will do anything for the bit.
Last May, a security guard was shot outside of Drake’s Bridle Path mansion in Toronto. As local TV crews rushed to the scene, Johnson and McCarrol used it as a filming opportunity.
The duo, known as Nirvanna the Band, brought their own cameras to document the crime scene for their movie, Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Sept. 4.

It’s a revival of the pair’s beloved web series and TV show, Nirvanna the Band the Show, which thrived on public stunts and inside jokes.
In the film, Johnson and McCarrol reprise their roles as two floundering Toronto musicians on a mission to book a show at local Toronto bar The Rivoli — which, of course, doesn’t go as planned.
Johnson and McCarrol were filming a scene for their movie as guests on the local morning radio program, The Roz & Mocha Show, when they heard a guard had been shot outside Drake’s residence.
“Because it was a radio station, they got the news of the Drake shooting right there,” Johnson told The Canadian Press. They immediately knew it was a unique opportunity that couldn’t be passed up.
“[We] just got into the van that we’d taken there and we drove to Drake’s house,” the BlackBerry director said.
One sequence in the movie captures the breaking-news media frenzy outside the Toronto rapper’s house. “There were helicopters in the sky, police lined up and down the street,” Johnson said.
When the duo initially arrived at Drake’s house, their crew was met with a police barricade and skeptical officers. The pair managed to slip past by claiming they were “independent media.”
Once at the crime scene, they began scouting opportunities to turn the situation into film fodder. In a viral CP24 clip, a reporter delivers a live segment (6:07) while Johnson is in the background directing the film’s cinematographer, Jared Raab.
In Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, the duo puts Toronto at the forefront, staging gonzo-style sequences featuring the CN Tower, the Rogers Centre and TTC streetcars.

Los Angeles was the epicenter of K-pop’s next evolution this week as Galaxy Corporation hosted its first-ever auditions for a virtual K-pop group at the El Rey Theatre.
From aespa’s “ae” avatars to motion-captured virtual group PLAVE to the current chart-topping success of HUNTR/X and Saja Boys of KPop Demon Hunters, virtual idols and the mix of technology and music is nothing new, but Galaxy Corporation’s auditions on Monday (Sept. 8) seemed to fall at the perfect time. The company describes itself as “enter tech” — converging IP, media and technology — and they’re betting big on a future where human performers power a virtual group that can perform and interact with fans in real time, marking another step forward in the music industry’s ongoing experimentation with digital idols. They currently have a small-but-quickly-growing roster of clients, from G-Dragon, Song Kang-ho (Parasite) and Kim Jong-kook, and also produced the Netflix breakout reality competition Physical: 100, which has gone on to have several spin-offs.

While most K-pop auditions have strict age ranges, a specified gender or other barriers to entry, Galaxy Corporation’s audition was searching for anyone with talent, regardless of genre, nationality or age. With this global search, they are “looking for creativity, emotional honesty, and the ability to connect with an audience” rather than visuals, as the group’s members will have digital avatars via motion capture, GK (Gyuhyuk Song), head of IP Music at Galaxy Corporation and senior lead for this project, tells Billboard. Some aspects of this project are based on the traditional idol group model: “Traditional idol training will remain at the core, but we’re also integrating new elements like digital performance and fan interaction in virtual spaces, to prepare artists who can move seamlessly between physical and virtual worlds.” And as intended, candidates who came in person were aged between early teens to adults. One father flew in with his auditioning daughter from the East Coast with dreams of participating in this project.
“Can an artist truly exist forever?” is a question that stuck with GK during his 12 years at SM Entertainment before joining Galaxy Corporation, noting that “groups struggle to surpass the seven-year standard contract period.” Of course, there are many exceptions these days with the global scale of K-pop and the way fans are more connected to their favorite artists than ever, but with this new project, the goal is to create “eternal artists.”
The concept of virtual artists isn’t entirely new — Gorillaz were an early pioneer the idea in the early 2000s — but what sets these newer groups apart is how their avatars are presented as fully realized individuals, with the real identities behind the characters often kept deliberately hidden.
Galaxy Corporation reinforced this approach for their auditions as well. Inside the El Rey, Galaxy Corporation prepared a holding area upstairs in the theater’s balcony and escorted candidates to the main stage while covered by large umbrellas to maintain anonymity throughout the process, aside from first name and age. A large screen was set up on the stage for the judging panel — which included GK, along with two other Galaxy Corporation representatives. Behind the screen, candidates had a mark on the floor for positioning and had a separate screen to see their motion-captured selves as one of two pre-designed avatars.
Virath Pum
There’s an existing culture of virtual artists, and with technology and AI advancing at a rapid rate, Galaxy Corporation emphasizes the importance of authenticity when it comes to building fandom. Fandom is already the core driver of so many artists’ success, and ways to integrate the fans into this new project is also top of mind.
“We believe fandom will become even more interactive and participatory,” GK says. “Fans will not only support, but also shape creative direction through AI-driven platforms. This could lead to a new culture where the line between creator and fan blurs, fostering communities that feel deeply personal and globally connected.”
Additional audition rounds are expected to be held in other cities later this year, with Galaxy targeting a debut that positions the group as a truly global act.

He added: “They’re country artists featuring me. They’re the ones performing them.”
