Ginger Spice didn’t invent wearing the Union Jack, but she’s definitely the poster child for the patriotic look.

Ginger — aka Geri Halliwell, now known by her married name Geri Horner — popularized the British flag dress when she performed with the Spice Girls at the 1997 Brit Awards. Twenty-four years later, Dua Lipa paid homage to the iconic ensemble with a Union Jack jacket and skirt of her own at the very same awards show on Tuesday night.

“Wow @dualipa you wore it well!” Horner wrote first thing Wednesday (May 12) on Instagram, also congratulating Little Mix for being the first female group to win the award for British group at the show. She added on her Instagram Story, alongside a video of Dua’s performance: “Girl power! Loved the outfit and the performance @dualipa.”

In a post later Wednesday, Horner told the full story behind one of her most famous looks.

“Trust urself.. this dress is a reminder to follow ur instincts & be urself,” Horner tweeted with a picture from 1997. “24yrs ago I had an idea to wear a Union Jack to celebrate The Brit Awards. Despite doubts, I trusted my instincts & wore it anyway. So special to see it worn by a fellow sister yesterday #girlpower”

Geri added on Instagram that her look was a little high-fashion mixed with a little DIY: “P.S. it was [a] £5 tea towel on a Gucci dress.”
