Tyler, The Creator’s performance at Kendrick Lamar‘s Pop Out concert almost didn’t happen.
During Billboard‘s conversation with the West Coast artist for our recent cover story, he told writer Rembert Browne the he decided to perform at the show at the very last minute where he did two songs: “WusYaName” from Call Me If You Get Lost and “Earfquake” from Igor.
“I wasn’t even supposed to go — I was in Atlanta working on [Chromakopia],” Tyler told Billboard. “But I landed that morning and couldn’t miss this sh—t,” in reference to Kendrick’s West Coast-themed victory lap. “And I don’t even get FOMO at all, n—a — I’ll go to sleep. But I’m cool with Kenny and Dave [Free] and Tim [Hinshaw] from Free Lunch. So I went home, showered and ran straight there.”
The Pop Out: Ken & Friends featured performances by not only Tyler, but a slew of guests that included Dr. Dre, Mustard, YG, Roddy Ricch, Ty Dolla $ign, members of Lamar’s former label TDE, and many more.
In the same interview, he critiqued the way podcasters have influenced music discourse, saying he would take podcast mics away if he ever were to become President of the United States.
Chromakopia is Tyler’s eighth studio album and his third straight No. 1 after his last two albums 2019’s IGOR and 2021’s Call Me If You Get Lost both reached the top of the Billboard 200, as well.
