Prosecutors rested their case Tuesday (Aug. 30) at R. Kelly’s federal trial in Chicago after presenting two weeks of testimony, including from four Kelly accusers, in their bid to prove the singer enticed underage girls for sex, produced child pornography and successfully rigged his 2008 state trial.

Among the last prosecution witnesses was a 42-year-old woman who went by the pseudonym “Nia.” Taking the stand Tuesday morning, she was the fourth and final accuser to testify at the trial in Kelly’s hometown. A fifth accuser, who prosecutors had said during openings would testify, never did. They didn’t explain why.

Through her testimony, Nia painted a picture of Kelly as a master manipulator who reeled in star-stuck fans, like her, to sexually abuse them and then discarded them.

The highlight of prosecutors’ case came two weeks ago with the testimony of a 37-year-old woman who used the pseudonym “Jane.” She described Kelly sexually abusing her hundreds of times starting in 1998 when she was 14 and Kelly was around 30.

Jane’s testimony is vital to the charge accusing Kelly of fixing his 2008 child pornography trial, at which he was acquitted. She testified that Kelly and his associates threatened and paid off her and her parents to lie to a grand jury before that trial.

Legal teams for Kelly and two co-defendants now get their chance to attack the government’s case. Judge Harry Leinenweber told jurors they would have Wednesday off, then return for the first defense witnesses Thursday. Closing arguments are expected to happen in the middle of next week.

A New York federal judge sentenced Kelly in June to 30 years in prison for convictions on racketeering and sex trafficking charges.

Kelly gave Nia, an aspiring actress and model, his telephone number after the then-15 year-old asked him for an autograph at an Atlanta mall in 1996, she testified. She said Kelly knew her age when he invited her to a concert in Minnesota, bought her plane ticket and sent a limousine with an all-red interior to pick her up.

On the way to the airport, Nia stopped to buy a red rose for Kelly, which she placed in her hotel room. When Kelly came to her room, he kissed her, then told her to undress and sit next to him on the bed. She said she was uncomfortable but did as he said. After touching her and himself, he quickly left, she said.

“I never got the chance to give him the rose,” Nia told jurors.

Nia spoke calmly and clearly as Kelly, wearing in a dark blue suit and black face mask, sat some 25 feet (7.6 meters) in front of her and looked directly at her. When Jane testified earlier in the trial, he often kept his eyes down.

Nia said that for weeks after meeting Kelly, he promptly answered all her calls. But before long, he never answered them. When she saw him years later at a video shoot, she said she was hurt when he didn’t appear to recognize or acknowledge her.

She ended up suing Kelly in the early 2000s, alleging sexual abuse. Kelly quickly settled, paying her $500,000.

Kelly’s 2008 state trial revolved around a video prosecutors said showed him sexually abusing Jane. She did not testify at that trial, but she told jurors at the current trial that she was the child in the video and Kelly was the adult man. Jurors at the ongoing trial viewed excerpts of that video and two others.

Kelly sold millions of albums even after allegations about his abuse began circulating publicly in the 1990s. Widespread outrage didn’t emerge until after the #MeToo reckoning and the 2019 docuseries Surviving R. Kelly.

Kelly associates Derrel McDavid and Milton Brown are co-defendants at the Chicago trial. McDavid, a longtime Kelly business manager, is accused of helping Kelly rig the 2008 trial. Brown is charged with receiving child pornography. Like Kelly, they have denied wrongdoing.

BLACKPINK is dominating the pop world, constantly breaking records with their eight Hot 100 hits. Most recently, their latest single, “Pink Venom,” became Spotify’s most-streamed song by a female artist in a single day in 2022 so far.

The girl group’s 2020 “How You Like That” music video snagged three entries in the Guinness World Records. With more than 86 million views in just the first day of release, the video earned Guinness’ most viewed YouTube video in 24 hours, most viewed music video on YouTube in 24 hours, and most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours by a K-pop group.

Their success and catchy music has led to a devoted fanbase affectionately called the Blinks, many of whom are celebrities. At the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift was seen singing and dancing along to the girls’ performance, while Lizzo made sure to snag a selfie with the superstar group.

Lil Nas X stays trolling his fans — even when they gush over how nice he is.

It all started when a fan shared on Reddit a sweet anecdote of meeting the “Industry Baby” star backstage at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night (Aug. 28). The user revealed that they were on their way out of the Prudential Center midway through the awards show, when the elevator attendant accidentally let them off on the wrong floor, which led to them spotting LNX.

“I’m a shy person so it took a lot for me to approach him and I didn’t want to be annoying but it’s my birthday and this opportunity seemed once in a lifetime, so I did,” the fan wrote. “I said (awkwardly) ‘Montero?’ He said ‘yeesss?’ I said ‘I’m not supposed to be here I’m sorry but can I get a picture with you?’ He said laughingly ‘yes but tell me I look classy’ (he was in his VMA outfit). I did obviously and he was so nice and posed and then suggested we change lighting so the pics would be better.”

The fan concluded, “It was really nice. We took a bunch of cute pics. I’m an unpaid intern and meet a lot of a–holes in this industry. It was really nice to meet someone I admire and find out they’re a genuinely nice person.”

Upon seeing the reshared post on Pop Crave’s Twitter account, Lil Nas X replied, jokingly replying, “this is not true. i am very mean in person. i once slapped a fan for singing the lyrics to industry baby wrong.”

See below. LNX went home on Sunday with three VMAs for best collaboration, best art direction and best visual effects — all for “Industry Baby” with Jack Harlow.

BLACKPINK‘s “Pink Venom” tallies a second week at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Trending Songs chart (dated Sept. 3), powered by Twitter, following its first full week of release.

Sony Music Entertainment is suing Triller for breach of contract, claiming the video-sharing social networking app has failed to make payments for months and after being served a termination notice has also failed to pull the company’s catalog of music from the platform.

According to Sony’s lawsuit filed Monday (Aug. 29) in New York, Triller has “historically failed to make payments in a timely manner” but those “failures” escalated in March 2022 when the company “failed to make any monthly payments required under the Agreement, totaling millions of dollars.” Since then, Triller has allegedly continued to fail to pay its outstanding fees, despite Sony’s requests (“and near-total radio silence in response,” the suit states). On July 22, Sony notified Triller that it was in material breach of their agreement and Aug. 8 the music company terminated the deal.

Still, without a licensing agreement in place, as the lawsuit states, “Triller has continued to reproduce, distribute, publicly perform, display, create derivative works, and otherwise exploit the valuable Sony Music Content in connection with the Triller App.”

Sony is suing Triller for copyright infringement now, seeking damages and an injunction to stop Triller’s continued use of the label’s recordings.

Sony — the second largest record label, based on U.S. marketshare, with acts including Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Lil Nas X and Doja Cat — first signed a licensing deal with Triller in 2016. Since then, the companies have since amended the deal several times leading up to their most recent agreement, referred to as “the Eleventh Amendment” in the lawsuit, which was signed in December 2021 and had an effective date as of Dec. 1, 2020. Under the Eleventh Amendment, Triller was obligated to pay Sony an initial payment due at execution followed by payments due on the first day of each month from March 1 through Nov. 1. None of those monthly payments have been made, Sony claims, and neither has any interest on overdue fees.

Sony isn’t the only one who’s had a hard time receiving payments from Triller this year. Earlier this month, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz sued the company for $28 million they said they were due for the 2021 sale of their popular Verzuz livestream series. Similar to Sony, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz received payments in 2021 but claimed they struggled to get their 2022 installments. A payment due in January was not received, but then was worked out for February. But then another $18 million that was due in March was never made, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz’s lawsuit claims, as well as the $1 million more per month for another 10 months they were promised after that. Triller has responded to the lawsuit, stating that the company believed the Timbaland and Swizz Beatz had not yet met certain required thresholds for additional payments and that it hoped the lawsuit was “nothing more than a misunderstanding driven by lawyers.”

But while Triller was allegedly failing to make these licensing payments, the company was writing other checks. As the lawsuit points out, on March 28 Triller announced its purchase of influencer marketing software platform Julius and on April 25 its purchase of direct to consumer sales platform Fangage.

These new lawsuits come as Triller prepares for a public listing later this year. The company announced on Monday it had completed “substantial pre-public financing in the form of debt and equity” after filing its S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company’s press release did not state the amount of financing, but noted Taiwan-based financial investment holding company Fubon Financial affiliate Total Formation Co. as a participant. Falcon Capital and Clearvue Partners are also participants, according to the release.

As well, Triller announced it had completed the acquisition of Bare Knuckle Fight Championship (BKFC), a a deal first announced earlier this year.

In February 2021, Universal Music Group pulled its catalog from Triller. A UMG spokesperson said at the time that Triller had “shamefully” withheld payments owed to our artists and refuses to negotiate a license going forward.” The two companies came to an agreement three months later, and UMG returned its catalog to the service.

A spokesperson for Triller did not respond to request for comment at time of publishing.

A prosecutor on Monday (Aug. 29) announced a sprawling indictment targeting members of what she said is a violent street gang that has been targeting the Atlanta area homes of famous athletes, entertainers and others who flaunt expensive possessions on social media.

Singer Mariah Carey, Marlo Hampton of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Atlanta United soccer player Brad Guzan and Atlanta Falcons football player Calvin Ridley all had their homes broken into, the indictment says. The 220-count indictment was filed Aug. 22 and charges 26 people, most of whom are accused of violating Georgia’s anti-gang and racketeering laws.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said the crimes alleged in the indictment — carjacking, kidnapping, armed robbery, shootings, home invasions — were committed by members of the Drug Rich gang, which she said began to emerge in 2016 in a neighboring county. In addition to the celebrity targets, social media influencers were also victimized in home invasions and burglaries, Willis said.

“What they do is target people who show their wealth on social media,” she said. “So I do have a message for the public: Where it is kind of fun to put your things on social media and show off, unfortunately these gangs are becoming more savvy, more sophisticated in the way that they target you.”

But Willis also had a message for the alleged gang members: “If you thought Fulton was a good county to bring your crime to, to bring your violence to, you are wrong and you are going suffer consequences and today is the start of some of those consequences.”

Willis said the indictment, filed last week, represented a collaboration between different law enforcement agencies working together. Cracking down on gangs is a priority for Willis, and she said she intends to pursue tough penalties for people involved with violent gang activity.

“I am not going to negotiate with gang members. I am not going to allow pleas,” she said. “We are going to find you, we are going to convict you and we’re going to send you to the prison for the rest of your days, and I’m not apologizing for that.”

Chris Rock told the crowd at a Phoenix stand-up show this week that he was offered to host the 2023 Oscars, following the incident in which Will Smith stormed the stage and slapped him across the face.

According to AZ Central, the comedian declined the gig, as it would be like returning to the scene of a crime, referencing the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, whose ex-wife’s killing started out by leaving her mother’s glasses at an Italian restaurant. Rock said returning to the Oscars would be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson “to go back to the restaurant.”

The tense moment in March occurred after Rock made an onstage joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, during the Academy Awards ceremony. “Jada, I love you. G.I Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,” the comedian said about her shaved head — which, unbeknownst to Rock, is caused by the actress’ struggles with alopecia.

Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes in response, while Smith laughed. Shortly after, the King Richard actor stormed the stage to slap Rock, who attempted to continue his banter before Smith began shouting from his seat, “Keep my wife’s name out your f—ing mouth.”

Smith apologized for his behavior in a formal statement posted to his Instagram on March 28; he additionally resigned from his membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and has been banned from the Oscars and related Academy event for 10 years.

In July, Smith uploaded a video to YouTube, apologizing further. “I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that, he’s not ready to talk. When he is, he will reach out. I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable and I am here whenever you are ready to talk,” he said.

Smith continued, “I want to apologize to Chris’s mother. I saw an interview [she] did, and that was one of the things I just didn’t realize. I wasn’t thinking, but how many people got hurt in that moment. I want to apologize to Chris’ mother, I want to apologize to Chris’s family, specifically Tony Rock. We had a great relationship. Tony Rock was my man. This is probably irreparable. I spent the last three months replaying and understanding the nuance and complexity of what happened in that moment. I’m not going to try to unpack all of that right now, but I can say to all of you, there is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment. No part of me that thinks that is the optimal way to handle a feeling of disrespect or insult.”

In tennis, “love” means nothing. But in a new Gatorade ad narrated by Beyoncé to celebrate the final U.S. Open appearance from tennis legend Serena Williams, “Love Means Everything.”

That’s the title of the new commercial, which shows women of all ages who are dancers, fencers, roller skaters, equestrians and everything in between who have been inspired by the magnificent career and life story of Williams. The ad debuted during Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards ahead of Monday’s (Aug. 29) first day of the 2022 U.S. Open tennis tournament, which Williams announced in a Vogue essay earlier this month would be her final tournament as a professional player.

“When the world writes her down in history, we’ll begin where she started: at love,” Bey begins her narration. “No points, zero score — just love. It’s a love that we’ll remember through the generations, a love that started a movement, a movement to always love exactly who you are and who you can be. To be so in love with your identity that your very essence cannot be contained. To love the sound of your own voice and the way you move. To feel like a queen unapologetically, with a crown indefinitely. To cherish every muscle and every curve your body exhibits. A movement to always love being a proud Black woman, a parent, a dreamer, a leader. To love being one of a kind. To always love being you. The whole you. The real you. You. You. You. To always love you.

“So when we write her down in history, no matter who you are, no matter where you are, we’ll remember what she’s shown us,” Beyoncé concludes. “A movement to love you.”

With that, the commercial’s “Love Means Everything” motto flashes across the screen.

Beyoncé and Williams have long been champions of one another, with the tennis star hitting the stage during Bey’s Formation World Tour for “Sorry,” the Lemonade song whose music video Serena also appears in. Queen B and husband Jay-Z, meanwhile, can often be spotted in the crowd at Williams’ matches, and Beyoncé contributed the Oscar-nominated song “Be Alive” to King Richard, the 2021 biopic that Serena and Venus Williams executive produced.
