The original Broadway cast recording of Wicked reaches the top 40 of the Billboard 200 albums chart for the first time, nearly 21 years after its release in December 2003. The set jumps 79-33 on the chart dated Dec. 7, following continued buzz generated by the recently released film adaptation of the long-running stage show.

The Broadway show, which opened in New York in October 2003, launched with Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel in the lead roles of Glinda and Elphaba (played by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the film).

Wicked is just the seventh musical cast album to reach the top 40 of the Billboard 200 in the last 25 years, following Bruce Springsteen’s solo show Springsteen on Broadway (2018) and the original Broadway cast recordings of Dear Evan Hansen (2017), Hamilton: An American Musical (2015), If/Then (2014), The Book of Mormon (2011) and Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2008).

The new Wicked film opened in U.S. theaters on Nov. 22 and has earned more than $260 million at the U.S. and Canada box office. Its soundtrack debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, marking the highest debut for a soundtrack of a big-screen adaptation of a stage musical.

In the tracking week ending Nov. 28, as reflected on the Dec. 7-dated Billboard 200 chart, the Wicked Broadway cast recording earned 22,000 equivalent album units (up 60%) while the Wicked film soundtrack starts with 139,000 units.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Dec. 7, 2024-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

The original Broadway cast recording of Wicked had previously peaked at No. 66 on the Billboard 200 in March of 2014. Chenoweth and Menzel starred in the Broadway show from its opening through July 2004 and January 2005, respectively. Wicked has continued to play on Broadway since its premiere in 2003, and with more than 8,100 performances, it is the fourth-longest running show in Broadway history.

The original Broadway cast recording of Wicked also spends a 350th nonconsecutive week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Cast Albums chart, which ranks the week’s top-selling musical stage show albums. Wicked has the second-most weeks at No. 1 on Cast Albums since the list began in January of 2006. The original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton: An American Musical leads the pack with 411 weeks at No. 1.

The Wicked cast album also debuts on the Top Streaming Albums chart at No. 38, where the Wicked movie soundtrack debuts at No. 4.

The National Hockey League revealed on Monday (Dec. 2) that its 2025 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series has gotten even better, as Twenty One Pilots are set to take the stage for a special intermission performance.

The outdoor matchup between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Detroit Red Wings will take place at Ohio Stadium on Saturday, March 1. The game will be broadcast live at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN in the U.S. and on SN360, SN+ and TVAS2 in Canada.

Ohio is special for the musical duo, as both were born in Columbus. To celebrate Twenty One Pilots’ return to their hometown, Ohio State University students will have the opportunity to use their school email address to purchase discounted $20.99 tickets to the game via Ohio State Account Manager. Twenty One Pilots are currently in the midst of a tour in support of their latest album, Clancy. The project debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and flew in at No. 1 on both the Top Album Sales and Top Rock Albums charts with 143,000 equivalent album units, landing the biggest rock debut of the year at the time.

The duo wrapped the U.S. leg of the tour in October, before they headed to Australia in November. In April 2025, they will begin their European run of dates, starting in Hamberg, Germany, on April 7.

Kesha released her latest single, “Delusional,” over the long holiday weekend, gifting fans with new music the same week she delivered a music video for “Joyride.”

On Wednesday, Kesha had teased the release of “Delusional” at the end of her new “Joyride” video, perhaps launching a high-speed journey into a new chapter of her career.

“Joyride,” which premiered in July, was the first single to be released via the singer’s own Kesha Records.

Kesha’s independent label has a global distribution deal with ADA that gives her full creative control and ownership of her work. ADA is also working together with Crush Music, Kesha’s management company, to oversee marketing and promotion for the pop star’s next album, expected to arrive in 2025. In the announcement of the partnership in September, Kesha noted, “I am excited to take control of my narrative and rewrite my story in the music business.”

Kesha’s newly released tunes follow the settling of a defamation suit filed by Dr. Luke in 2023, which came several years after the singer filed a suit against the producer in 2014 alleging physical, sexual and emotional abuse.

After a 16 year wait for a new album, The Cure are getting a little prolific.

The veteran post punk outfit have today (Dec. 1) announced the release of a new live album, recorded during their recent London performance.

Fittingly-titled Songs of a Live World: Troxy London MMXXIV and recorded at the titular venue on Nov. 1, the album captures “a very special night” which served as the launch of their first album in 16 years, Songs of a Lost World.

The show itself was livestreamed to YouTube, with the band performing the entire eight-song album in full on the day of its release. Additionally, the set also featured 23 more songs from their illustrious career, including a five-song suite of tracks from their second record, 1980’s Seventeen Seconds.

While the full show will remain available to stream on YouTube, the Robert Smith-mixed audio will be releleased on vinyl, CD, and cassette in early 2025. Pre-orders for the record have been made available now, with all profits to be donated to U.K. charity War Child.

The release of The Cure’s Songs of a Lost World has been a massively successful one for the veteran group. In addition to giving the band their first U.K. No. 1 since 1992’s Wish, the record also made a return to the top of U.S. charts as well.

It became the band’s first No. 1 on the 33-year-old Top Album Sales chart and the act’s highest-charting effort on the Billboard 200 (No. 4) since 1992. It also bows at No. 1 on Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums, Top Alternative Albums, Vinyl Albums and Indie Store Album Sales.

The album’s first-week sales were bolstered by its availability across five vinyl variants (which sold a combined 23,000 copies; the band’s best week on vinyl since Luminate began tracking sales in 1991), a standard CD, a CD/blu-ray audio package, two cassettes, a standard digital download and a deluxe digital download with five bonus live tracks (exclusive to the band’s webstore).
