In this week’s crop of new country releases, Miranda Lambert displays strength against those who would underestimate her, while a new posthumous album from country music icon Johnny Cash highlights previously unreleased music of his from 1993. Check out all that and more of our latest favorites below.

Miranda Lambert, “Dammit Randy”

ACM Awards Triple Crown winner Miranda Lambert’s songs are known for whiskey-fueled, fiery dismissals of wrecked relationships, whether on early hits such as “Kerosene” or her recent “Wranglers” — but this time around, there’s no need for blazing, burn-it-all-down anthems. Here, in her latest release since inking a deal with Republic Records, she’s confident in her own value and strength (of both song and character) — she simply moves on, knowing the one who underestimated her will come to regret it. That perspective is evident on lines such as “You gave up ’til the very last minute/ Now that I’ve gone, I’ve got your attention.”

The Castellows, “Miss America”

This sibling trio offers up a harmonica-laced, coming-of-age story arc, one embedded with nostalgia and longing for simpler childhood moments of “bare feet in the dirt,” before this small-town girl grew up, moved away from home, and “got a big city chip on her shoulder.” This trio excels at these kinds of sepia-toned, neo-traditional country songs, which operate as a perfect vessel for their idyllic harmonies. The trio’s Powell, Lily and Eleanor wrote the song with Nicolle Galyon and Will Bundy.

Johnny Cash, “Hello Out There”

Cash’s new posthumous, 11-song project Songwriter stems from untouched demos Cash recorded at LSI Studios in Nashville in 1993, in between his 1991 set The Mystery of Life and what would become his career-revitalizing American Recordings series of projects with producer Rick Rubin. This celestial-tinged gospel song marks the project’s opening track, centered by Cash’s haunting calls for redemption and keen observations on humankind, and entrenching Cash’s reputation as not only a commanding vocalist but also a versatile songcrafter. “Hello Out There” is further elevated by a mesh of guitar from Marty Stuart, along with additional steel guitar, percussion, and vocals from Ana Cristina Cash and Harry Stinson.

Mackenzie Carpenter, “Only Girl”

Carpenter offers up her first true love song here, capturing the heady feeling of young love in this lilting, acoustic guitar-driven ballad. She wrote this song with her brother Micah, as well as Mia Mantia and SJ McDonald. With its slow-rolling feel and Carpenter’s honeyed vocal, “Only Girl” feels destined to be a wedding dance staple.

Midland, “Lucky Sometimes”

Trio Midland will issue their new eight-song project Barely Blue on Sept. 20, and are offering an early look at the set with their new single “Lucky Sometimes.” A tumble of pared-back guitars, harmonica and Laurel Canyon-esque harmonies, the group captures the euphoric feeling of being on a high-rolling streak of good luck, and enjoying the ride no matter how long it runs.

Tom Petty‘s estate and Warner Chappell Music announced a new worldwide administration deal on Monday (July 1), covering what’s described as the “vast majority of songs” dotting his long and winding catalog, including his decades fronting the Heartbreakers and as a solo tunesmith.

The deal, terms of which were not disclosed, covers dozens of Heartbreakers-backed songs including “Refugee,” “Here Comes My Girl” and “Even the Losers” off the band’s commercial breakthrough, Damn the Torpedoes, along with all-timers like “The Waiting,” “Learning to Fly” and Mary Jane’s Last Dance” off later efforts. (The pact does not include “American Girl” or the band’s first album, Billboard can confirm.)

Petty packed a lot of punch in his solo albums as well, and the estate’s deal with WCM covers hits including “Free Fallin’”, “I Won’t Back Down” and “Run-in’ Down a Dream” off the five-time platinum Full Moon Fever, and “Wildflowers,” “You Don’t Know How It Feels” and others off his three-time platinum Wildflowers release.

The pact also encompasses Petty’s contributions to his pre-Heartbreakers band Mudcrutch and with roots rock supergroup Traveling Wilburys, Billboard has learned. The latter band had a relaxed and collaborative songwriting process, however Petty was main writer on the Wilburys classic “Last Night.”

Petty was only 66 and coming off a 40th anniversary tour when he died in Oct. 2, 2017 of cardiac arrest. Over the course of his 40-year career he released 13 studio albums with his famed band and another three as a solo act, going on to sell over 85 million albums and earning inductions in both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Along the way he scored hits with fellow icons like Stevie Nicks (“Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around”), earned MusiCares Person of the Year and performed during the Super Bowl. He also dabbled in acting, including a memorable cameo as a future version of himself in Kevin Costner’s The Postman.

The Petty estate praised the new partnership as it looks to “expand the reach” of the singer-songwriter’s expansive catalog and bring in new fans to his work. “This partnership will open the door to new licensing opportunities and serve to introduce his music to a new generation across the globe,” the estate shared. “We’re excited for this new chapter of growth, and the preservation of Tom’s legacy both at home and abroad.”

WCM co-chair and COO, Carianne Marshall, and co-chair and CEO, Guy Moot, added: “Tom Petty’s music is woven into the fabric of our lives, not just across America, but around the world. He captured the full range and resilience of the human spirit in songs about freedom and dreams, outcasts and rebels, relationships and heartbreak, the personal and the universal. Tom’s unmistakable sound and lyrics remain as timeless and vital today as ever, and all of us at Warner Chappell Music are honored to be joining with his estate to help amplify his extraordinary legacy on a global scale.”

The Petty catalog is the latest big get for Warner Chappell following catalog deals in recent years with the estates of Davie Bowie and George Michael, and new stars including Zach Bryan, Morgan Wallen, Dua Lipa and Gerardo Ortiz, among others.

As recently as 2022, Petty’s catalog was administered by Wixen Music Publishing, which went after an Arizona politician for their unauthorized use of his anthem “I Won’t Back Down.”

Simone Biles is in her Reputation era, and the world isn’t ready for it — Taylor Swift included. After the celebrated gymnast used “…Ready for It?” in her show-stopping floor routine at Day 1 of the 2024 Olympic Trials in Minneapolis last week, the pop star sang her praises with a tweet Saturday (June 29) ahead of Team USA’s journey to the Games in Paris next month.

Biles opened her high-scoring drill Friday (June 28) with the first 30 seconds of Swift’s 2017 track, striking fierce poses before diving into a triple-double flip that one announcer dubbed the “hardest tumbling pass in the entire world.” The 27-year-old athlete walked away with a score of 14.850 in the category and 58.9000 total, making her a frontrunner for the U.S. women’s team.

Needless to say, the Miss Americana herself couldn’t have been prouder. “Watched this so many times and still unready,” she commented on a video of the routine on X. “She’s ready for it tho👏👏👏🥇🇺🇸❤️”

On Sunday (June 30), Biles performed the routine again, at one point soaring 12 feet in the air with a particularly impressive flip. She ended Day 2 with an all-around score of 117.225 and was selected for Team USA for the third time in her career, having previously won gold at the 2016 Games.

Swift has long been a supporter of Biles. When the athlete made her grand return to the Tokyo Games in 2021 after withdrawing from her previously scheduled events due to mental health reasons, the 14-time Grammy winner starred in a promo video cheering on the world champion’s resilience.

“Throughout the last week, her voice has been as significant as her talents,” Swift said in the NBC ad. “Her honesty as beautiful as the perfection that had long been her signature. But don’t you see? It still is. She is perfectly human. And that’s what makes it so easy to call her a hero.”

“I’m crying 🥺🤍 how special. I love you @taylorswift13,” Biles tweeted after the video aired, to which Swift responded, “I cried watching YOU. I feel so lucky to have gotten to watch you all these years, but this week was a lesson in emotional intelligence and resilience. We all learned from you. Thank you.”

There are two things the English cannot live without: soccer and Glastonbury. The legendary summer festival that took place over the weekend drew 200,000 to see sets by headliners Dua Lipa, LCD Soundsystem, Coldplay, SZA and Burna Boy, even as England was fighting for its life in a thrilling elimination game against Slovakia in the Euro 2024 soccer tournament.

According to the Guardian, former One Direction star and solo singer Louis Tomlinson livestreamed the game in a festival campsite on a flat screen TV taped to a trolley fueled by a generator on Sunday morning, drawing hundreds to the site to watch the match. The move came after festival officials announced last week that the match would not be shown on Glasto grounds to avoid clashing with main stage performances.

“It’s the second screen I’ve bought,” Tomlinson told the Guardian when the game went into extra time after England’s Jude Bellingham knotted things up with a thrilling 95th minute equalizer; Harry Kane scored during extra time to send England to the quarter finals.. “The first got cracked. I wasn’t going to take credit for it because it looked like we were going to lose in normal time, but now that we’ve equalised I’m happy to.”

The Guardian said that Tomlinson bought the gear earlier in the day and was originally planning to watch the game in the VIP backstage area before spotty reception forced him to find another location near the Pyramid stage. Tomlinson, dressed in a vintage England windbreaker said, “it was a little touch-and-go at times because the signal kept going in and out… luckily we got the win and we pulled it off.”

You can tell the presidential election is really heating up when the White House dispatches Vice President Kamala Harris to do some awards show politicking. On Sunday night (June 30), Harris made a surprise appearance during the 2024 BET Awards in a pre-taped bit paid for by the Biden/Harris campaign in which she sis’d down with fellow Howard University alum and awards show host Taraji P. Henson.

The two spoke to each other on FaceTime, with Henson dialing in from backstage and Harris appearing to connect from her residence as they chopped it up about the HBCU they both attended and Henson confessed to being worried about the upcoming presidential election. “Women’s reproductive rights are on the line, our Supreme Court is on the line,” Henson said. “Our basic freedoms are being tested Madame VP! I know you’ve been traveling across the country, what have you been hearing,” the Color Purple star added.

“Yeah, girl I’m out here in these streets, and let me tell you — you’re right, Taraji, there is so much at stake in this moment,” Harris assured her. “The majority of us believe in freedom and equality. But these extremists, as they say — they ‘not like us.’”

“No, they not,” Henson said in response to Harris dropping the title of the recent Kendrick Lamar Drake diss track that debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100.

Continuing the Biden/Harris campaign’s attack line that former president Donald Trump and his Republican followers are a threat to American democracy, Harris added, “There’s a full-on attack on our fundamental freedoms, the freedom to vote, the freedom to love who you love, the freedom to be safe from gun violence, the freedom for a woman to make decisions about her own body and not having her government tell her what to do.”

Elsewhere, Henson very adamantly urged the crowd to keep their eye on the ball. “Its’ time for us to play chess, not checkers. It’s about making decisions that will affect us as human beings… out careers, our next generations to come,” she said, referring to a just-announced Supreme Court ruling that enforces bans on sleeping outdoors that some have said is tantamount to criminalizing homelessness.

“Pay attention, it’s not a secret,” Henson said. “Look it up. They are attacking our most vulnerable citizens. The Project 2025 plan is not a game. Look it up,” she added vehemently about the conservative presidential transition project in place to radically reshape the U.S. government in a fashion that some have said has authoritarian overtones.

Henson also paid tribute to “Not Like Us” elsewhere in the show when she dressed up as K-Dot and performed verses with BET-specific lyrics as her dancers mimicked the moves of Kendrick’s dancers from his recent Pop Out concert.

The appearance by Harris came just days after what was widely viewed as a poor performance by Biden during his first debate with convicted felon Trump, during with the president appeared confused and meandering at times.

Taylor Swift is used to looking out over massive crowds on her Eras Tour and seeing smiling faces. But on Sunday (June 30) in Dublin, the singer appeared to share a special moment from stage during her third and final gig at Aviva Stadium when boyfriend Travis Kelce walked into the venue during the show.

Dressed casually in a white t-shirt and dark khaki pants with a black ball cap, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end made his entrance during Swift’s performance of the Folklore song “August” — about mid-way through the show — and according to video montages posted on X, Taylor’s face seemed to light up when she spotted her beau of nearly a year as she smiled and pointed from the stage.

As NFL players begin to crank things back up again for the upcoming 2024-2025 pre-season, Kelce jetted from teammate Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s wedding in California on Saturday to Dublin for the show, where he was also spotted hugging and chatting up actress Julia Roberts in the VIP.

It’s the second time in the past few weeks that Kelce has jet-setted off to join Swift at one of her shows in London on June 23, where he took to the stage in a tuxedo and top hat to help her with the “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” quick change. Another video showed the couple backstage holding hands and waving at Swifties as they walked through the backstage area at the show where Swift performed the live debut of the Tortured Poets Department track “Clara Bow” in front of Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks, who she referred to as “a hero of mine” from the stage.

Check out some of the videos of Kelce at the Dublin show below.

The 2024 BET Awards delivered on the “culture’s biggest night.” Taraji P. Henson played host for the show and kicked things off impersonating Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” performance at his Pop Out concert on Juneteenth.

Live from L.A.’s Microsoft Theater on Sunday evening (June 30), a versatile range of legends to rising stars hit the stage.

From Will Smith’s return to the public eye with a gospel anthem to Sexyy Red campaigning for a presidential nomination and Megan Thee Stallion’s rebirth opening the show, the BET Awards performances offered a little something for everybody.

Other artists performing throughout the action-packed award show include Shaboozey, Latto, Ice Spice, Victoria Monet, Tinashe, Ms. Lauryn Hill alongside her son YG Marley, GloRilla and more.

Normani was also supposed to be performing Sunday night to continue building on the success of her new DOPAMINE album, but the Fifth Harmony album revealed she was forced to cancel her set after suffering an injury during rehearsals.

It was a celebratory night for plenty of dignitaries across Black music. Usher was the man of the hour while being honored with his Lifetime Achievement Award. He even took home some more hardware with a victory in the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist category.

Killer Mike delivered the most boisterous and memorable speech of the entire show when the Atlanta rapper’s poignant 2023 LP Michael won Album of the Year.

Billboard ranks all of the performances that took place inside the Microsoft Theater. Find all of the winners at the 2024 BET Awards here.

Kendrick Lamar‘s “Not Like Us” may have been a clear favorite of the audience inside the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, CA last night (June 30), but the 2024 BET Awards were more concerned with highlighting that different types of “us” that make up global Blackness.

Between the world-stopping Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef, a Black country boom led by Beyoncé and Shaboozey and rap touring renaissance featuring Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion, 2024 has been stacked with defining moments in contemporary Black music.

Megan Thee Stallion kicked things off with a bombastic medley of tracks from her newly-released Megan album, including “Boa,” “Where Them Girls At” and the Billboard Hot 100-topping “Hiss.” Thee Hot Girl Coaches fiery performance set the tone for several memorable female rap moments, with Sexyy Red, Latto, Ice Spice and GloRilla all delivering strong performances. GloRilla — who performed her reigning summer anthems, “TGIF,” “Wanna Be” (with Megan Thee Stallion) and “Yeah Glo!” — began her set suspended in the air before parachuting down to flawlessly execute her funky choreography.

Obviously, Usher was one of the biggest touchpoints of the night, with both his lifetime achievement award acceptance speech and tribute sparking scores of discourse across social media. Featuring Childish Gambino, Keke Palmer, Chlöe, Tinashe, Summer Walker, Coco Jones, Marsha Ambrosius, Victoria Monét, Teyana Taylor and Latto, Usher’s lifetime achievement award tribute performance highlighted not just the current dominance of women across mainstream R&B, but also the “Burn” singer’s seminal impact across dance and music.

As usual, a bulk of the awards were handed out off-screen. The Knowles-Carter household brought home a pair of trophies thanks to Beyoncé’s Viewer’s Choice victory for “Texas Hold ‘Em” and Blue Ivy Carter‘s YoungStars Award win for her performances on her mom’s blockbuster Renaissance World Tour. Nicki Minaj took home best female hip-hop artist for a record-extending eighth non-consecutive year, Kendrick Lamar won best male hip-hop artist for a record-extending seventh non-consecutive year, Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese reigned as Sportswoman of the Year and ¥$ (Kanye “Ye” West and Ty Dolla $ign) was crowned best group.

Here are the 7 best moments of the 2024 BET Awards.

Just hours after triumphantly returning to the scene of his Grammys night arrest to accept the BET Album of the Year award for MICHAEL, Killer Mike dropped a powerful new single and video, “HUMBLE ME,” in which he reflects on the incident and its aftermath.

In the striking black-and-white music video, the Run the Jewels MC is seen stripped of his jewelry and placed in handcuffs, symbolizing the events of his Grammy night arrest.

Through his lyrics, he draws parallels between his experience and the Biblical story of Daniel in the lions’ den. The video culminates in a hopeful note, with a cameo from his son Mikael “Pony Boy” Render, who recently received a life-saving kidney transplant.

Reflecting on his Grammy night ordeal, Mike raps, “I won at the Grammys / did that for Atlanta / swept up like a janitor / got sent to the slammer / treat me like an animal or some kind of Hannibal.” He then reveals, “I went to sleep as free as could be / and the next day my son got a kidney.”

“I believe that humility and worship granted me God’s grace in the face of that test,” the rapper says.

During his album of the year acceptance speech at the BET Awards, Killer Mike addressed his arrest and the subsequent journey, saying, “Technically, I was not supposed to be here. I was put in handcuffs and I was marched out of this building, but I want to tell you, look at God because I’m back baby. I’m back and I’m winning.”

“I want to tell Black people that because of BET I’m back. Not ’cause of no white person calling nobody. A Black man runs this business, a Black company put this show on, and they got my Black ass back in here. Thank y’all.”

Mike also took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of civic engagement, urging viewers to vote in the upcoming elections.

“Who we vote for on the big stage is important, but it’s more important you know who your city council person is, who your prosecutor is,” he said “And if you don’t like the people running, run your Black a** to the polls and run yourself.”

Killer Mike’s arrest on Feb. 4, 2024, after winning three Grammys, including best rap album for Michael, stemmed from an altercation with a security guard outside the Grammy pre-telecast in February.

Although he was initially charged with misdemeanor battery, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office later declined to pursue criminal charges. Instead, Mike completed a community service requirement, leading to the case’s resolution.

Killer Mike is currently on a North American tour supporting his latest album, with upcoming performances at major festivals including Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival, and Montreal International Jazz Festival.

“HUMBLE ME” is slated to appear on the follow-up to MICHAEL – Mike’s first solo album in over a decade – which is expected to drop later this summer via Loma Vista Records.

The rapper, backed by the Mighty Midnight Revival choir, will be on tour through early fall with stops at major festivals and a Blue Note Jazz Club residency.

The BET Awards for 2024 were filled with big wins and even bigger performances. Usher was honored by taking home the Lifetime Achievement Award, Tyla won best international act, Megan Thee Stallion performed and so much more. Keep watching to learn more about what went down!
