Donny Benét, the Australian singer, songwriter and bass-player, preps the release of Infinite Desires, the first through his new indie label, Donnyland Records.
Benét’s sixth studio album, Infinite Desires is due out Feb. 29, 2024, with distribution through The Orchard. The first cab off the rank is “Multiply,” with two more singles slated for release in the months ahead.
A neo-disco banger, “Multiply” marks a new era for Benét, who, in addition to assuming label-chief duties, is once again self-managed. “I’m completely indie,” he tells Billboard.
With Donnyland Records, Benét can “control how I release music,” which will include some “really cool side projects.”
Benét, who earned a master’s degree in jazz performance and, in “a past life,” was “an accomplished jazz musician,” he admits, will support the LP release with tours of Australasia, North America, the U.K. and Europe.
Infinite Desires is the followup to Mr Experience (via Dot Dash/ Remote Control Record), which opened at No. 26 on the ARIA Albums Chart in May 2020. Due to the spread of COVID-19, however, the Don’s touring ambitions were curtailed. That’s history, and Benét is keen to make up for lost time.
“We’ve dragged out Mr Experience as long as we can. And yeah, it’s had some time to breathe, which is cool,” he explains. “I’m looking forward to (playing songs from the album). I’ve only done one run in Europe with it. So, we’re not going to hang it up just yet.”
Benét is a reigning champion at the AIR Awards, his instrumental Le Piano, winning for best independent jazz album or EP at the 2023 edition in Adelaide.
Based in Sydney, Benét’s inimitable style and sounds have pulled the artist a global cult following; it’s a blend of string of groovy tunes with ‘80s panache, time-machine pastel suits, and a look that’s been described as that of a badass who stepped out of Grand Theft Auto.
Classic Don cuts include “Girl of My Dreams,” “Second Dinner,” “Santorini” and “Konichiwa,” which featured on The Weeknd’s Handpicked playlist showcasing 24 songs that inspired After Hours.
Benét warms up for his world tour with a handful of dates early December in New Zealand, followed by a run of concerts across the U.K. and Europe through March and April 2024. The North America jaunt is due to start April 23 at Mohawk, Austin, TX, and is followed by a homecoming lap in mid-2024.

SYDNEY, Australia — After posting another year of growth, and record revenue and distributions, APRA AMCOS is doubling-down on its call for a tax-offset to kick-start live music.
The PRO last month posted “very strong” financials for the full-year 2023, with record gross revenue of A$690.5 million ($453 million), up 12% from the 2022 result, and net distributable revenue paid to songwriter and publisher members, affiliates and rightsholders up 11.4% year-on-year to A$595.2 million ($390 million), also a new benchmark — gains that are “indicative of a post-pandemic recovery.”
Those healthy results came with a gut-punch.
Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, the organization found that 1,300-plus live music venues and stages across Australia were lost, or roughly one-third fewer licensed premises where artists can perform medium to smaller gigs.
At the presentation of those annual results at the APRA AMCOS HQ in Sydney, the organization’s CEO Dean Ormston urged the federal government to commit to a live music venue tax offset to act “as a catalyst in jump-starting live music nationally.”
This week, Ormston and APRA AMCOS reiterated those calls.
“For the current wave and the next generation of music creators to develop their skills and become export-ready, we need to provide them with the resources at home and build a sustainable live music ecosystem,” says Ormston.
A live music venue tax offset, he continued, would revitalize the country’s network of small live music venues.
Meanwhile, the music rights management body has confirmed the make-up of its board, following held two annual general meetings held Tuesday (No. 21) in Sydney.
On the APRA board, writers Mark Callaghan and Jonathan Zwartz and publishers Jaime Gough (Concord Music Publishing ANZ) and Matthew Capper (Warner Chappell Music Australia) retained their positions. Jenny Morris and Damian Trotter (Sony Music Publishing) were named as chair and deputy chair of the APRA board, respectively.
On the AMCOS board, directors Trotter and Heath Johns (BMG) retained their positions. Karen Hamilton (120 Publishing) is a new director appointment to the AMCOS board, while Philip Burn, chairman and CEO of Hal Leonard Australia, stepped down following ten years as a director, and was thanked for his service and expertise.
APRA and AMCOS board directors are elected by their respective memberships through a secure ballot. The process and results of the elections are audited and verified by APRA AMCOS’ independent auditors, KPMG.
Those elections were held in light of the society’s “Year In Review,” which reported a “dramatic” 400% year-on-year gain in license fees for concerts and festivals to A$31.9 million ($20.9 million), an all-time high, while international income from affiliate societies spiked 17.7% to A$70 million ($45 million), a new record.
Despite inflation and the rising cost of living, Aussie and Kiwi music fans flocked to shows. Notable tours included internationals Ed Sheeran, Elton John and Harry Styles, notes APRA AMCOS, plus Grammy-winning Sydney-EDM act RÜFÜS DU SOL, Crowded House, award-winning NZ acts L.A.B., SIX60 and more.

The Beatles’ compilation albums 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 (also known as the Red and Blue Albums, owed to the distinctive cover art), re-enter Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated Nov. 25) at Nos. 6 and 5, respectively, following their expanded reissue on Nov. 10.
The titles sold 22,000 and 24,000 in the week ending Nov. 16 in the U.S., according to Luminate. Each told sold less than 500 copies in the previous week. For both titles, it is their largest sales week since the week ending Dec. 24, 1994, when they sold 37,000 and 40,000, respectively.

Upon their original release in 1973, the 1962-1966 album contained 26 songs, while 1967-1970 held 28 tunes. (On the Billboard 200 chart, 1967-1970 reached No. 1, while 1962-1966 peaked at No. 3.) For the 2023 reissue, 21 songs were added to the two albums — 12 songs on 1962-1966 and nine on 1967-1970. The latter’s additional cuts include the recently released new single “Now and Then,” which debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 – marking the Fab Four’s 35th top 10-charting hit.
The two albums were available to purchase as a digital download, a double-CD or three-vinyl LP set. They were also combined into a singular boxed set – 1962-1970 – that contained all of the material, and available only as a four-CD or six-vinyl LP box. (The box debuts at No. 24 on Top Album Sales with 7,000 sold.)
The trio of releases dot a number of other Billboard album charts, let’s take a look:
1962-1966: Billboard 200 – No. 20 (Re-entry) Top Rock & Alternative Albums – No. 6 (Debut) Top Rock Albums – No. 4 (Debut) Catalog Albums – No. 3 (Re-entry) Vinyl Albums – No. 17 (Debut) Tastemaker Albums – No. 5 (Debut)

1962-1970: Vinyl Albums – No. 13 (Debut) Tastemaker Albums – No. 15 (Debut) Top Current Album Sales – No. 17 (Debut)
Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.
Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums and Catalog Albums rank the week’s most popular rock and alternative, rock, and catalog (older) albums across all genres, by equivalent album units. Vinyl Album tallies the week’s top-selling vinyl releases. Tastemaker Albums measures the top-selling titles at independent and small chain record stores. Top Current Album Sales ranks the week’s top-selling new/current albums (non-catalog/older titles).
Elsewhere in the top 10 of the new Top Album Sales chart, Stray Kids’ ROCK-STAR debuts at No. 1 with 213,000 copies sold, Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is a non-mover at No. 2 with 69,000 sold (down 43%), while Chris Stapleton’s Higher launches at No. 3 with 57,000.
After debuting at No. 1 a week ago, Jung Kook’s Golden falls to No. 4 with 34,000 sold (down 79%). Aespa’s Drama: The 4th Mini Album starts at No. 7 with 18,000 sold. Lana Del Rey’s Lust for Life re-enters at No. 8 with 14,000 sold (up from less than 500 sold the week previous) following a new color vinyl pressing. Rounding out the top 10 is the debut of AJR’s The Maybe Man at No. 9 with 13,000 and Jimmy Buffett’s Equal Strain On all Parts, falling 3-10 in its second week with nearly 13,000 sold (down 75%).
In the week ending Nov. 16, there were 2.302 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 11% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 1.93 million (up 16.9%) and digital albums comprised 372,000 (down 11.9%).
There were 956,000 CD albums sold in the week ending Nov. 16 (up 20.2% week-over-week) and 964,000 vinyl albums sold (up 14.1%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 30.998 million (up 2.3% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 40.395 million (up 18.1%).
Overall year-to-date album sales total 88.134 million (up 6.3% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 71.877 million (up 10.6%) and digital album sales total 16.257 million (down 9.5%).

Jamie Foxx has been accused of sexual assault and battery by a young woman who claims the singer and actor groped her at a New York restaurant in 2015.
The complaint was filed in New York court on Wednesday (Nov. 22) by attorney Craig Phemister. In it, the Jane Doe plaintiff claims she met an allegedly intoxicated Foxx at the Catch NYC restaurant rooftop in August 2015 and, along with a friend, asked if he would take photos with them.
The woman claims that after taking photos with Foxx, he made several flirtatious comments before subsequently pulling her to a “secluded area.” There, she claims he rubbed her breasts before sliding his hands into her pants and placing “his fingers on and in” her vagina and anus despite her attempts to step away from him. She says he only stopped after her friend came looking for her, at which point she claims he walked away.

Axl Rose Sued For Allegedly Sexually Assaulting Penthouse Model In 1989
The woman, who says she was 18 at the time, claims that in the aftermath of the alleged assault, she “was injured; was rendered sick, sore, lame and disabled; was caused to undergo medical treatment and advice; was unable to pursue her usual and regular activities; was caused to undergo great conscious pain and suffering, continues to undergo such, and will permanently be affected by the injuries and emotional distress she incurred as a result of the sexual assault, abuse, assault and battery.”
Also named in the lawsuit are Catch Hospitality Group, which owns the New York restaurant, as well as its co-founder, Mark Birnbaum, whom the woman claims was drinking with Foxx at his table that night. She alleges that Birnbaum, the hospitality group and associated companies “were negligent in the hiring, training, lack of supervision, management, control and retention of their employees,” including several (listed as John/Jane Does 1-10) whom she says were working at the restaurant that night.
The lawsuit additionally claims that Foxx’s co-defendants “had knowledge of [his] propensities for aggressive behavior towards females, the potential for unwanted sexual touching and his bad disposition when consuming excessive alcohol.” The suit adds that restaurant staff were not properly trained “how to observe when a patron such as Foxx has consumed an excessive amount of alcohol and should not be served any more, and in otherwise ensuring the safety of their patrons from unwanted and abusive sexual touching.” It also claims the restaurant did not provide adequate security to protect its guests, thereby making the alleged assault possible.
All defendants are additionally accused of violating New York City’s Gender-Motivated Violence Act — Foxx for the alleged assault and Birnbaum and the companies for allegedly enabling it.
The woman is seeking damages for pain and suffering and economic loss as well as punitive damages.
Representatives for Foxx, Birnbaum and Catch Hospitality Group did not immediately respond to Billboard‘s requests for comment.
The case against Foxx is just the latest in a string of sexual misconduct lawsuits filed over the last month against men in the music industry, including industry executives like L.A. Reidand Jimmy Iovine and superstar artists including Axl Rose and Sean “Diddy” Combs (who settled the lawsuit brought by his accuser, former girlfriend and R&B singer Cassie, one day after it was filed). The spike in cases is due to the looming expiration at midnight Thursday (Nov. 23) of New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which created a one-year window for alleged survivors to take legal action over years-old accusations that would typically be barred under the statute of limitations.
The song’s radio uptick across regional Mexican stations pushes it from No. 11 to No. 1 with 6.7 million audience impressions in the U.S., up 61%, earned during the Nov. 10-16 tracking week, according to Luminate. Among the strongest weekly supporters, stations WOJO (Chicago), KLNO (Dallas) and KLTN (Houston) take the lead.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has rejected Madison Square Garden’s long-standing proposal to build a Sphere arena in London, less than two months after the company debuted its first Sphere project to critical acclaim in Las Vegas.
News of the rejection came by way of a letter from Khan to Anthony Hollingsworth, director of the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), which oversees London’s Olympic Park properties. On Nov. 6, Hollingsworth had written to Khan to inform him that “the local planning authority is minded to grant planning permission” for the Sphere project. In the letter dated Monday (Nov. 20), Khan explained to Hollingworth that after considering a 111-page report commissioned by the Greater London Authority (GLA) advising the mayor to reject the plan, he was now ordering the LLDC to “refuse planning permission” for the venue.

A statement from Madison Square Garden Entertainment officials said they were “disappointed in London’s decision” but added, “There are many forward-thinking cities that are eager to bring this technology to their communities. We will concentrate on those.”
A proposal for the venue was submitted in 2018, and Sphere London initially survived key votes by the city’s local planning authority. But with his letter, Khan has seemingly doomed the project.
The mayor said his main reason for rejecting the proposal was the impact he believed the venue would have on the surrounding area, writing that Sphere would “cause significant light intrusion resulting in significant harm to the outlook of neighbouring properties.”
He also said the size of the venue — 300 feet high and 400 feet wide — “would result in a bulky, unduly dominant” facility” that failed “to respect the character and appearance of this part of the town centre and the site’s wider setting.” Lastly, he criticized the venue’s high “energy intensive use,” which he says “does not achieve a high sustainability standard, and does not constitute good and sustainable design.”
“GLA officers have concluded that to grant permission would be contrary to the Development Plan,” adds Khan in the letter, citing a document that lays out the spatial development strategy in London for the next 20 to 25 years. “[It] would prejudice the implementation of the policies within the Development Plan relating to residential amenity, good design, and the conservation and enhancement of London’s heritage.”
The Sphere project had previously faced pushback from some local residents as well as AEG, which operates London’s O2 Arena, located just four miles from the proposed site of the venue. In January, after the London Legacy Development Corporation’s Planning Decisions Committee greenlit MSG Entertainment to initiate work on the project, AEG called on Khan to reject the project in a statement that read in part: “The advertising façade is at a wholly unprecedented scale for London and totally out of keeping with the surrounding area. The design was conceived for the heart of Las Vegas and has been transposed onto this east London site: it’s the wrong design, in the wrong location.”

Kelly Clarkson kicked off the week with a classic on Monday (Nov. 20), when she performed Frank Sinatra’s rendition of “I Get a Kick Out of You.”
“I get no kick from champagne / Mere alcohol doesn’t thrill me at all / So tell me why should it be true / That I get a kick out of you,” Clarkson muses in the chorus, dressed in a black off-the-shoulder top and leopard print maxi skirt.
“I Get a Kick Out of You” was originally written by Cole Porter and first performed in 1934 for the Broadway musical Anything Goes, before it was featured in the 1936 film. Over the years, the track has been covered by legends beyond Sinatra, including Dolly Parton, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. The Bennett/Gaga rendition was nominated for three awards at the 2022 Grammy Awards, including record of the year.
Clarkson, meanwhile, is fresh off the release of the deluxe issue of her 10th album, Chemistry, which contains five brand new tracks — “I Won’t Give Up,” “Did You Know,” “You Don’t Make Me Cry” featuring her daughter River Rose, “Goodbye” and “Roses” — in addition remixes of the album singles “Mine” and “Favorite Kind of High” by David Guetta and Ty Sunderland respectively. There’s also a live version of “Mine” live from The Belasco.
Chemistry was initially released on June 23 via Atlantic Records and debuted at No. 6 on the July 8-dated Billboard 200, spending a total of three weeks on the chart following its release.
