J-Hope notches his second top 10-charting effort on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated April 13), as Hope On the Street, Vol. 1 bows at No. 2. He previously visited the region with Jack in the Box in 2023, which debuted and peaked at No. 2.

Hope On the Street, Vol. 1 is one of five debuting titles in the top 10 on the latest chart, as it’s joined by Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter (No. 1), Sum 41’s Heaven :X: Hell (No. 5), Aaron Lewis’ The Hill (No. 5) and mgk and Trippie Redd’s collaborative set Genre: Sadboy (No. 7).

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

Cowboy Carter gallops onto the chart with 168,000 copies sold in the U.S. in the week ending April 4, according to Luminate. Of that sum, physical sales comprise 125,500 (63,500 on CD and 62,000 on vinyl) and digital download sales comprise 42,500.

Cowboy Carter’s sales were supported by the album’s availability across a number of configurations, released on March 29. It was issued as standard 19-track edition on vinyl (across four variants, each pressed on different color vinyl [black, red, white and blue] with alternate back cover artwork), a CD with an additional song (“Flamenco”) and a digital download and streaming edition (both in clean and explicit versions, with three bonus songs “Flamenco,” “Spaghetti” and “Ya Ya,” plus two interludes). The CD edition was issued in four variants (each with different back cover art). Two of the variants were sold as stand-alone items, while two of the CDs were only available inside two deluxe boxed sets (each with a different branded T-shirt contained inside a branded box). All physical configurations of the album were sold exclusively through Beyoncé’s official webstore, while the digital download and streaming editions were widely available.

The vinyl edition of Cowboy Carter sold 62,000 copies (across its four variants combined), marking Beyoncé’s biggest week on vinyl and the largest week for any vinyl album in 2024.

J-Hope’s Hope On the Street, Vol. 1 debuts at No. 2 on Top Album Sales, scoring the second top 10-charting effort for the singer. The set bows with a little over 44,000 copies sold in the tracking week. Of that sum, a little more than 38,000 were driven by CD sales. The album’s sales were supported by eight collectible CD editions (including exclusive variants for Target, Walmart and the Weverse store), all containing branded paper merchandise.

A pair of former No. 1s from Taylor Swift follow J-Hope, as Lover rises 7-3 (10,000; up 8%) and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) bumps 5-4 (9,000; down 6%).

Sum 41’s Heaven :X: Hell starts at No. 5 with a little over 7,000 sold, marking the fifth top 10-charting set and highest-charting effort ever for the act. The set’s sales were bolstered by its availability across eight vinyl variants, which combined to sell nearly 4,000 copies – the act’s best sales week on vinyl.

Aaron Lewis’ The Hill debuts at No. 6 with just under 7,000 sold – mostly from sales of its digital download album (about 4,000). It was also available as a standard CD and in two vinyl variants. The Hill is the fifth top 10-charting set for Lewis.

The first collaborative album from mgk and Trippie Redd, Genre: Sadboy, starts at No. 7 with nearly 7,000 sold (largely from its digital download). It’s the seventh top 10 for mgk and sixth for Trippie Redd.

Closing out the top 10 on Top Album Sales are three former chart-toppers: Swift’s Folklore (13-8 with nearly 6,500; down less than 1%), Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine (10-9 with just over 6,000; down 19%) and TWICE’s With YOU-th (12-10 with 6,000; down 15%).

In the week ending April 4, there were 1.343 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 11.9% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 997,000 (up 11.8%) and digital albums comprised 346,000 (up 12.1%).

There were 518,000 CD albums sold in the week ending April 4 (up 21.4% week-over-week) and 475,000 vinyl albums sold (up 2.9%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 6.173 million (down 32% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 6.425 million (down 48.9%).

Overall year-to-date album sales total 16.883 million (down 36.9% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 12.661 million (down 41.9%) and digital album sales total 4.221 million (down 15.1%).

Jason Derulo gave his two cents on Diddy’s current legal woes and Jelly Roll recalls bailing on meeting the mogul. Don Toliver has reportedly been arrested for suspicion of DUI.

Jason Derulo says, “Diddy is innocent for now,” as Jelly Roll says “Diddy was not the vibe” and Don Toliver was allegedly arrested. Here’s three things you need to know in Hip-Hop. Jason Derulo broke into the biz writing songs for Diddy and his artists. So when TMZ caught up with him he had this to say, “I believe in innocent before proven guilty for sure.” Jelly Roll, maybe not so much.

Jelly Roll
I did Kimmel. The day Diddy did Kimmel, where they said do you want to meet such and such? And I said yeah, and I started walking that way. And as I was getting down the hallway, this is a true story. I said, “Nah.” Better not. And went and got back in the car,

He told the ‘Canceled’ podcast, vibes were off and a Diddy photo wasn’t it.

Jelly Roll
Very seldom does things rub me in a way where I was like I don’t even know if that’s a picture I want to have. Yeah.

Also reported by TMZ, Don Tolliver was arrested for suspicion of DUI. They are saying they received a report from California Highway Patrol, noting the artists was pulled over for speeding near the valley in SoCal. They know that he was released in the field and cited not taken to jail as an officer said, “Tolliver was cooperating in full.”

Megan Thee Stallion is looking at her third album as a “rebirth” for herself as she continues exploring her next era of music.

The Houston Hottie posed nude for the cover of Women’s Health on Wednesday, (April 10) where she teased what fans can expect with her upcoming project.

“I was inspired to create this album about rebirth because I feel I am becoming a new person physically and mentally,” she said of shedding her old skin.

Meg expanded on the snake motif and serpentine theme she’s deployed on her single titles with “Cobra” and the Hot 100-topping “Hiss.” “They’re feared, misunderstood, respected, healing,” she said.

In the past, the 29-year-old has struggled with combining vulnerability with music that’s still hard-hitting and staying true to herself.

“I’ve always struggled to figure out how to be vulnerable and still make music that is going hard at the same time,” she added. “I’m getting into a better space with making music that is still true to myself but also true to my message. I am very much a flower, but my flower has thorns.”

Her forthcoming album will be the first to arrive since Tory Lanez was sentenced to a decade behind bars last year in the 2020 case, in which the R&B singer shot the “WAP” rapper multiple times in the feet following an argument outside a Hollywood Hills house party S

“A lot of people didn’t treat me like I was human for a long time,” she said. “I feel like everybody was always used to me being the fun and happy party girl. I watched people build me up, tear me down, and be confused about their expectations of me. As a Black woman, as a darker Black woman, I also feel like people expect me to take the punches, take the beating, take the lashings and handle it with grace. But I’m human.”

It wasn’t until Megan started therapy which she credits for jumpstarting her healing process. The Houston native works out four to five times a week with a regimen that includes the gym, pilates and beach exercises.

“Before I went onstage, I would be crying half the time because I didn’t want to [perform], but I also didn’t want to upset my fans,” she admitted. “I didn’t want to get [out] from under the covers. I stayed in my room. I would not turn the lights on. I had blackout curtains. I didn’t want to see the sun. I knew I wasn’t myself. It took me a while to acknowledge that I was depressed. But once I started talking to a therapist, I was able to be truthful with myself.”

Megan Thee Stallion’s last album, Traumazine, arrived in August 2022 and debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.

A U.K. Parliament committee has issued fresh calls for a “fundamental reform” of music streaming to address what it describes as “pitiful returns” for songwriters and publishing rights holders.

A report from the Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) Committee published Wednesday (April 10) calls upon the British government to “do more to make sure music makers are paid fairly” and to press ahead with a package of sweeping copyright reforms.

Related

Those reforms include changing the revenue split between recording and publishing rights from music streaming, currently set at around 55% for recording and 15% for publishing. That weighting “does not reflect the importance of songwriters, composers and publishers in the music streaming process,” says the committee. Its members want government ministers to bring forward a consultation with fans, creators and industry stakeholders to “incentivise an optimal rate” for publishing rights that will “fairly remunerate creators for their work.”

Other recommendations in the CMS report include the introduction of a statutory “private copying” levy like what exists in other European countries such as France, Germany and Italy. That would require a small tax to be charged on the purchase of electronic devices and blank media that can be used to store songs, which is then paid out to artists and songwriters via collecting societies. The introduction of such a scheme would generate between £250 million ($313 million) and £300 million ($376 million) a year, claims the CMS committee, and safeguard reciprocal payments from other markets where private copying mechanisms exist.

“Not only does a lack of such a scheme in the U.K. prevent British creators from receiving payments from the domestic market, but it has also put their payments from abroad under threat,” says the report, calling for the introduction of a private copying levy within the next 12 months.

On the subject of artificial intelligence, the CMS committee echoed its previous demands for stronger enforcement of creators’ rights against AI developers using copyright-protected works for training purposes without consent or fair compensation.

“We are concerned that the status quo simply favours AI developers, given creators’ concerns that their IP is already being used in AI development without licence or any practical means of recourse,” states the report, which criticizes the government’s lack of progress on establishing a code of practice around the use of AI and intellectual property.

More support also needs to be given to freelancer staff and the self-employed working in creative industries, such as the music business, in response to long-held complaints around contracts and working conditions, say committee members.

The CMS report is the latest chapter in a long and ongoing series of government-led interventions into the U.K. music industry fueled by artist discontent over low payments from streaming, beginning with a 2020 Parliamentary inquiry into the music streaming business. That probe wrapped the following year by calling into question the major record labels’ dominance of the industry and declaring that the music streaming business “needs a complete reset.”

Numerous government-led working groups, investigations and initiatives followed, including studies looking at “equitable remuneration” and the impact of AI on the music industry. A working group focused on creator remuneration is due to meet for the first time this month.

Despite the progress that has been made, CMS committee chair Dame Caroline Dinenage MP said the U.K. government “needs to move further and faster to ensure music makers really are properly rewarded for their work.”

“If creators are no longer to be the poor relations, the government needs to play catch up by plugging the gaps in outdated copyright and intellectual property regulations,” said Dinenage in a statement accompanying Wednesday’s report.

In response, Jo Twist, chief executive of British labels’ trade body BPI, said the committee was right to highlight creators’ concerns around generative AI, which she called “unquestionably the most significant issue facing the creative industries today,” but said the report fails to recognize that, “with the support of their labels, more U.K. artists are succeeding in the streaming economy than ever before.”

“In an increasingly competitive global industry, their approach risks limiting investment and harming the U.K. talent of the future,” said Twist in a statement.

Umbrella trade group the Council of Music Makers, whose members include the Musicians’ Union and Music Managers Forum, was more positive about the committee’s findings. In a statement, the organization said the report provides a good summary of the issues and some of the proposed solutions to improve creators’ remuneration, but cautioned that for real progress to be made, “we need stakeholders from across the music industry to stop denying reality and to, instead, come to the table with solutions, whether that’s the copyright reforms proposed by MPs or a negotiated agreement.”

Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker has found his Harley Quinn.

The first trailer for the much-anticipated sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, co-starring Lady Gaga as the infamous henchwoman, arrived Tuesday night (April 9).

“I’m nobody,” Gaga’s Harley tells Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck when they meet in the trailer, with a sweeping version of the 1965 Hal David and Burt Bacharach classic “What the World Needs Now Is Love” playing in the background. “I haven’t done anything with my life like you have.”

While “Love” is the only song we hear, we see the visuals of what appears to be multiple musical moments throughout the trailer. “We use music to make us whole, to balance the fractures within ourselves,” we hear Steve Coogan’s character say in voice-over.

Phoenix acknowledges his relationship with Gaga’s character in a separate scene with Coogan, saying, “I’ll tell you what’s changed: I’m not alone anymore.”

In addition to Gaga, Phoenix and Coogan, the film also stars Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), Catherine Keener (Incredibles 2) and Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin).

Variety previously reported that the Todd Phillips-directed film is “mostly a jukebox musical” that integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known songs” and could contain one or two original soundtrack songs as well. The publication added that the film is expected to “break the mold of traditional musicals.”

Last week, fans got a first listen of Gaga’s voice as Harley Quinn. “You’re Joker… you can do anything you want,” the star is heard saying over a series of TikTok photos from the upcoming movie, including one of the Joker and Harley in a loving embrace with “the world is a stage” written across the top.

Folie à Deux follows the 2019 psychological thriller, Joker. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards in 2020, with Phoenix winning best actor and Hildur Guðnadóttir winning best original score.

Joker: Folie à Deux is out Oct. 4. Watch the first trailer below.

Last week, pop star Conan Gray released his vibrant third album Found Heaven — and soon before, he stopped by Billboard News to discuss everything from falling in love for the first time to working with Max Martin to bring that feeling to life.

“It very much affected how I made the music,” says Gray, who also shares that “this whole album is highs and lows.”

Related

He says he started the ideation process during his Superache Tour nearly two years ago. As he recalls, after each performance he would retreat to the basement “because there’s always a piano in the basement of these theaters I was playing… that’s when I would notice these different themes I was writing about.”

He later tapped the MXM songwriting and production crew of Max Martin, ILYA and Oscar Holter to help flesh those various themes out, saying they “really opened up my eyes and wings to all of the different sides of myself that I could try out. … They wanted to push me to do something that was the whole array of me.”

And while Found Heaven does boast power-pop hits like “Never Ending Song” and “Lonely Dancers,” the album also features more intimate songs like “Forever With Me,” album closer “Winner” and standout track “Alley Rose.” As Gray says, “When I first recorded [‘Alley Rose’], I recorded it in the same voice as the rest of the album, a bit more energetically. And then I was like, ‘Wait, I need to not do that. I need to sing it as calm and tender as possible — each song requires a different part of me. … I feel lucky that people give me the space to do both.”

Gray also opened up about the love that inspired much of this album — and the heartbreak he had to process soon after. As he tells it, after flying to London for their scheduled meet-up, he landed to a text ultimately ending the relationship. And yet, he wouldn’t change a thing about his experiences surrounding Found Heaven — and his necklace of a star cutout inside a teardrop is a reminder of exactly that.

“In all the things that make you cry, the happiest moments of your life and the saddest moments of your life, there is a magic in the fact that you even got to experience it at all,” says Gray. “I’ve spent so many years of my life hiding in my room and not doing anything and being so afraid of ever getting hurt or rejected or feeling bad, that I ended up living no life. I kept this on my neck the whole time I was making this album [as a reminder] that I have to live my life.”

To hear what else Gray said of his latest album, watch the full interview above.

Jessica Simpson enjoyed a relaxing beach vacation with her family in Los Cabos, Mexico, and the star took to Instagram on Monday (April 8) to share a photo dump from the trip.

“2024 Spring Breakin’ with the fam was EPIC! Thank you @tinasimpsonofficial for giving these kiddos memorable moments in Cabo that they will hold close to their precious hearts and cherish for a lifetime,” she captioned the snaps, which included glowing selfies, fishing trips on a luxurious boat and overall family fun.

Simpson shares daughters Maxi, 11, and Birdie, 5, as well as son Ace, 10 with husband Eric Johnson, whom she’s been married to since 2014.

It’s looking to be an exciting upcoming 2024 for Simpson, who is in the process of preparing both an album and tour. Speaking with Footwear News, Simpson shared that she’s been working on new material in Nashville after temporarily relocating her family there from Los Angeles last summer. “It’s like a retreat for me,” she told the outlet. “I get to just crawl up inside my head and embrace my heart. I feel so enlightened there. Writing music has become a beautiful therapeutic thing for me that I didn’t know was so natural, but it’s because I haven’t done it in so long. It’s just nice to know that I’m meeting myself back in this place, as a woman, and after going through everything that I’ve been through in my life. There’s a sense of freedom and empowerment.”

The Dukes of Hazzard star’s next album would mark her first in more than 13 years. Her last release, Happy Christmas, was released on Nov. 22, 2010.
