In his first major interview, Oliver Anthony’s co-manager Draven Riffe talked to Billboard about the whirlwind that has surrounded the Virginia country singer over the past week-and-a-half since his everyman anthem “Rich Men North of Richmond” went viral and the record label feeding frenzy to sign him.

On Saturday (Aug. 19), near a playground in front of the venue before Anthony’s afternoon show at Eagle Creek Golf Club and Grill in Moyock, N.C., Riffe explained how he met the singer-songwriter and why Anthony’s newly assembled team is “taking it slow” when it comes to weighing the multitude of offers coming his way, even those from high-profile artists. During the conversation, thousands of fans flocked to a nearby outdoor stage surrounded by a few food and beverage trucks, waiting for Anthony, whom Riffe said was saving his voice and, therefore, declined to speak with Billboard.

Riffe only became aware of Anthony (whose real name is Christopher Anthony Lunsford; his stage name is in honor of his grandfather, Oliver Anthony) within the past month. A Missouri friend of Riffe, from the manager’s days as a touring musician, sent him Anthony’s music. Riffe knew it was perfect for radiowv, the YouTube page Riffe co-launched in 2018 that highlights unsigned Americana and country musicians from the Virginia/West Virginia region.

“I listened to Oliver’s music and I just knew he was special,” Riffe tells Billboard. “Normally, it’s ‘OK, this person has a good song and I want to help them out and get them on the channel.’ With Oliver, I called my friends and family on my way to record him and also on my way back to tell them how special [he was].”

Riffe recorded Anthony outside on his farm in Virginia, where both had the feeling they were embarking on something bigger than just posting the artist’s music. “Personally, I feel like God had a hand in Oliver’s music,” Riffe says. “Me and him, we prayed before the session. Me and him together. We both prayed before we recorded ‘Rich Men North of Richmond.’ We both had an interesting experience the whole weekend. We just felt like it was for a purpose that was way bigger than us, just two old regular dudes, you know what I mean?”

“Rich Men North of Richmond,” which takes on politicians, taxes, welfare and other issues from a struggling working man’s perspective, exploded after radiowv posted it Aug. 7 and has since garnered more than 24 million views on radiowv’s YouTube page. By Aug. 11, the song had reached No. 1 on the iTunes Country chart, outpacing the former chart leader, Jason Aldean’s controversial track “Try That in a Small Town.” The song is a contender to debut at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 that arrives Monday (Aug. 21). Other songs from Anthony, who has been recording music since 2021, also climbed up iTunes and Spotify’s charts, including “Aint Gotta Dollar” and “I’ve Got to Get Sober.”

“In our opinion, God has chosen to speak through Oliver and to speak to all Americans through his music, all around the world,” Riffe says. “We’ve gotten comments from Zimbabwe, every country you could think of.”

Riffe, who manages Anthony with businessman Brian Prentice, says the push has been organic.

“There was not a whole lot of planning involved,” he says. “We just knew if we got the video out there people were going to  love the song and it would resonate with a lot of folks. There wasn’t some big massive planning team around this. I had a few friends who helped us push the song out there, like my friend Josh [Baer], who has a page called Country Central. We all coordinated and Oliver’s following as well, we just tried to push it out there all at once with our little group of friends and that’s how it happened.”

Almost immediately, social media jumped on the song. Even though Anthony said in a video that “I sit pretty dead center down the aisle on politics and always have,” among those amplifying the song were right wing pundits and politicians, including Joe Rogen, Matt Walsh, Breitbart and Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, through posts on X (formerly Twitter) and other outlets. Anthony’s followers have also soared, reaching 743,000 on Instagram and nearly 400,000 on X.

High-profile artists — including John Rich, who offered to produce his music, and Jamey Johnson, who joined him onstage last weekend at a free show in North Carolina — have also provided support.

“There have been other artists who have reached out, honestly just to be a mentor,” Riffe says, namechecking Brent Smith of Shinedown, Jelly Roll, Ryan Upchurch and Randy Travis’ team. Johnson’s appearance, who Riffe says showed up unprompted last weekend, meant a great deal to Anthony. “He got to talk to Jamey, which was sentimental to Oliver because he grew up burning the speakers up on his vehicle listening to Jamey, so to get up there [on stage] your first time — that was special to Oliver.”

Riffe says, “We’re literally open to working with everybody,” but that no decision has been made as to when and with whom he will enter the studio.

Similarly, though record labels and booking agents have aggressively chased Anthony — one label head told Billboard, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this before” — Anthony posted on Facebook on Thursday (Aug. 17) that he was in no rush to sign a deal. “People in the music industry give me blank stares when I brush off 8 million dollar offers,” Anthony wrote.

Riffe affirms that Anthony plans to do as much as he and his team can themselves. “As far as taking things slow, people act as if it’s so complicated, but really, it doesn’t have to be,” Riffe says. “He could play a stadium show tomorrow, but it’s about the music and it’s about making sure it’s right… we just want to take things slow and we’ve  built a tight-knit team.”

Taking it slow entails booking their own shows, including an Oct. 7 concert at Big River Outdoors Campground in Irondale, Mo. From Anthony’s standpoint, the idea is to lift other artists and friends as his own star ascends.

“Oliver’s very passionate, not just about getting his message out, but helping a lot of other musicians [get] their message heard,” Riffe says. “That’s a key part of it. Yes, he can play some big shows with big musicians, but he’s very passionate about bringing other unknown, unheard musicians up and helping them get their music out as well.”

Riffe says that help extends to providing jobs for those in Anthony’s community. “We’re doing all the booking ourselves,” he says, adding the Anthony is booked through the end of the year. “We’re trying to keep everything in-house as much as we can… If we could have a hand in helping get a person a job they’ll love then we want to do that rather than contracting it out to something that we don’t even know where the money is going.”

Though Anthony is in no hurry to sign any major label deals, that doesn’t mean more music isn’t coming. Riffe says there are five more acoustic videos to roll out from the sessions radiowv recorded at Anthony’s farm that will hit radiowv’s YouTube page and streaming platforms soon.

“That way they’ll get to see the actual live performance and then a more cleaned up version of the song that they get to listen to that’s from the video they’ve seen,” he says.

Ariana Grande has big plans for the 10th anniversary of Yours Truly.

The 30-year-old pop star and actress announced through social media on Saturday (Aug. 19) a week’s worth of surprises to celebrate her 2013 debut album, which bowed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

In a video post on Instagram featuring a mix of past and present footage, the Wicked star revealed that the rollout begins on Friday (Aug. 25) with a deluxe digital release of Yours Truly, along with newly recorded live performances of “Honeymoon Avenue” and “Daydreamin’.”

On Saturday (Aug. 26), Grande will drop the first part of a Q&A and a merch capsule, followed by a live performance of “Baby I” on Sunday (Aug. 27). The festivities continue on Monday (Aug. 28) with an unspecified vinyl pre-order, along with part two of the Q&A. Tuesday (Aug. 29) brings two more live performances (“Tattooed Heart” and “Right There”).

The celebration concludes Wednesday (Aug. 30) — marking the 10th anniversary release date of Yours Truly — with a live performance of “The Way” and “some behind the scenes stuff we found,” the singer writes.

Grande took to her Instagram Stories to specify that the deluxe digital release of Yours Truly will feature “the Live from London, updated versions of the songs we performed from” the album. The “7 Rings” singer added, “I can’t wait for you to hear them. This was such a healing and special project to do.”

Released Aug. 30, 2013, through Republic Records, Yours Truly served as the world’s proper introduction to the pint-sized star with major pipes who, up until then, had only been familiar to tweens as the star of Nickelodeon’s Victorious, its spinoff Sam & Cat and Broadway’s 13.

Britney Spears is opening up following her split from Sam Asghari.

On Friday night (Aug. 18), the 41-year-old pop superstar took to Instagram to break her silence after the fitness instructor and actor, 29, filed for divorce earlier in the week.

“As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together … 6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked but … I’m not here to explain why because its honestly nobody’s business !!!” Spears wrote alongside a video of herself dancing to Janet Jackson’s 1993 hit “If.”

“But, I couldn’t take the pain anymore honestly !!! In some sort of telepathic way I have been receiving so many messages that melt my heart from friends and I thank you !!! I’ve been playing it strong for way too long and my Instagram may seem perfect but it’s far from reality and I think we all know that !!! I would love to show my emotions and tears on how I really feel but some reason I’ve always had to hide my weaknesses !!!”

Asghari filed for divorce from the pop star on Wednesday (Aug. 16) in Los Angeles Superior Court, per documents obtained by Billboard. The filing notes that the couple separated on July 28, with Asghari citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for divorce. He also seeks spousal support from Spears.

The “Hold Me Closer” singer and Asghari began dating after they met on the set of her “Slumber Party” music video in 2016. After dating for five years, the couple got engaged in September 2021 and soon tied the knot in a star-studded Los Angeles wedding ceremony in June 2022. Just a month before their wedding, Spears revealed that she suffered a pregnancy loss.

“If I wasn’t my dad’s strong soldier, I would be sent away to places to get fixed by doctors !!! But that’s when I needed family the most !!! You’re supposed to be loved unconditionally … not under conditions !!!!” Spears continued in her Instagram post. “So I will be as strong as I can and do my best !!! And I’m actually doing pretty damn good !!! Anyways have a good day and don’t forget to smile !!!”

A day after filing for divorce, Asghari posted a statement on his Instagram Stories. “After six years of love and commitment to each other, my wife and I have decided to end our journey together,” he wrote. “We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always. S— happens. Asking for privacy seems ridiculous so I will just ask for everyone including media to be kind and thoughtful.”

Bailey Zimmerman posts his third straight career-opening top 10 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Aug. 26), as “Religiously” rises 11-9. In the Aug. 11-17 tracking week, the song increased by 8% to 19.1 million audience impressions, according to Luminate.

The song, co-written by the 23-year-old, is from his LP Religiously. The Album., which arrived at its No. 3 high on Top Country Albums in May.

“Religiously” follows Zimmerman’s “Rock and a Hard Place,” which dominated Country Airplay for six weeks beginning in April, and “Fall in Love,” which led for a week last December.

Back ‘In’ Top 10

Parmalee scores its sixth Country Airplay top 10 as “Girl in Mine” climbs 12-10 (17.9 million, up 9%). The song is the group’s first top 10 since “Take My Name,” which reigned for two frames in June 2022.

Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad

For the third time since Country Airplay launched in January 1990, an artist claims two songs in the top three. Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” ranks at No. 2 (29.5 million, down 4%), following five weeks at the summit beginning in July, while fellow promoted single “Love You Anyway” pushes 5-3 for a new best (28.2 million, up 10%).

Combs is the first act to earn the achievement as the sole artist on both songs. The other two to realize the feat are Luke Bryan and Tim McGraw.

Bryan’s “Play It Again” and Florida Georgia Line’s “This Is How We Roll,” on which he’s featured, ranked in the top three for three weeks starting in May 2014, after McGraw’s “Bring On the Rain” (with Jo Dee Messina) and his own “The Cowboy in Me” shared space in the top three for two frames in March 2002.

The show’s cast includes Sara Ramírez, Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker, Karen Pittman, Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler, Christopher Jackson, Niall Cunningham, Cathy Ang and Alexa Swinton.

Season 2 features the return of two major characters from the SATC franchise: Aidan Shaw (John Corbett) and Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall). Aidan attempts to rekindle his relationship with Carrie (Parker) — despite refusing to step foot in her apartment — and Samantha will make an appearances in the season finale episode, Variety revealed in May.

“It’s the 25th anniversary of [SATC], it felt like something really nice and happy and a nod to this experience that all four of us shared,” Parker said of Cattrall’s cameo during an interview with Good Morning America in June.

Sam Smith, Gloria Steinem and Candice Bergen make cameos in the latest season of the series, which is executive produced by Michael Patrick King, John Melfi, Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky, alongside Parker, Davis and Nixon. Jon Batiste is an albums artist through and through, and spoke with Billboard News to prove it. The Grammy award winner sat down with Billboard in the latest episode of the program to discuss his latest project, World Music Radio, and to divulge his approach to success in light of being a highly decorated artist.

Related

Speaking of World Music Radio — which was released on Friday, Aug. 18 — Batiste revealed that he worked with producer Jon Bellion on the project, which allowed several unintentional themes to make its way into the record.

“Water is a theme in the album. There’s many different themes that recur, and we didn’t even really realize when we were making it, some of the themes were subliminal,” the five-time Grammy winner told Carl Lamarre, Billboard‘s deputy director of R&B/hip-hop. “I was working with the great Jon Bellion…he had this thing for his son for in terms in living life and the world’s crazy and just the idea of self care, being in the world living your life, sometimes you just gotta take pause. And relating that to my life and the thing we’ve been trough and all the stuff we’re trying to create in this album is a mantra.”

Creating a new body of work, following the success of his 2021 effort WE ARE (which earned him four out of his five total Grammys) could seem like a daunting task, but Batiste revealed that the accolades do not factor into his approach to making music.

“I really make bodies of work. The singles are crazy, that’s important, but I’m a top to bottom album artist. I create bodies of work and I create worlds that you immerse yourself in, so that requires people who not only know how to connect to what’s in the culture and reinvent it and make it our own, but also speak to it through my voice and understand that there’s a world that’s being built that’s bigger than just me,” he explained.

Batiste added that instead of the pressure coming from “trying to outdo any public perception or even in awards,” it comes from wanting to “build something that’s even more bespoke, even truer to my artistry that takes everything that I’ve done so far, synthesizes it and adds to it.”

World Music Radio, preceded by singles “Calling Your Name” and “Drink Water,” is available to stream now.

Jon Batiste talks about his creative process for his new album World Music Radio, potentially becoming an EGOT winner during his career and more!

Jon Batiste:
Everything will fall into place for you. So that’s a message to everybody you know, whatever you doing whatever you creating, there’s no pressure. Just be you, walk your path. Hello, I’m Jon Batiste, and this is Billboard News.

Carl Lamarre:
Mr. Batiste, my brother.

Jon Batiste:
Yes.

Carl Lamarre:
How are you feeling?

Jon Batiste:
I feel great. Glad to be here with you, glad to be living.

Carl Lamarre:
We were just talking ahead of the cameras about your new record “Drink Water.” I told you when I first heard it. You know, it felt like a mantra like you said. I was like, “You must have been in the argument. You know, the missues was like, ‘You know, Jon, I don’t like how you’re doing this.’”

Jon Batiste:
Right? Calm down!

Water is the theme in the album. There’s many different themes that recur, and we didn’t even really realize when we were making it — some of the things was subliminal. And you know, I was working with the great Jon Bellion, Long Island — shoutout to Long Island — the great John Bellion had this thing that he had for his son, just in terms of living life and the world’s crazy, and just the idea of self-care and being in the world living your life. Sometimes you got to take a pause. And relating to that in my life and the things we’ve been through and all the stuff that we’ve tried to create in this album is a mantra.

Gary Young, the original drummer of ’90s indie rockers Pavement, has died at age 70.

“Gary Young passed on today,” Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus posted Thursday (Aug. 17) on X (formerly Twitter). “Gary’s pavement drums were ‘one take and hit record’…. Nailed it so well. rip.”

Related

Matador Records, which released Pavement’s beloved 1992 debut album Slanted and Enchanted, also paid tribute on X. “We were exceedingly lucky to know the amazing human, drummer, producer and solo artist Gary Young,” the independent label’s account shared along with a black-and-white photo of the artist. “Much love today to his family, friends and bandmates.”

Young was born in Mamaroneck, New York, in May 1953 and started his music career in Stockton, Calif., in the 1980s by booking acts to play the area. Malkmus co-founded Pavement with guitarist Scott Kannberg in Stockton in the late ’80s and the band released its debut EP, Slay Tracks (1933-1969) — recorded at Young’s Louder Than You Think Studio — in January 1989. After two more EP releases in 1990 and 1991, Pavement dropped their first full-length, Slanted and Enchanted, in April 1992.

The seminal project — remembered as one of the most influential albums of the ’90s — peaked at No. 152 on the Billboard 200 chart in 2002 thanks to a 10th-anniversary reissue. In 2017, in recognition of the LP’s 25th anniversary, Billboard published an article with the headline: Pavement’s ‘Slanted and Enchanted’ Turns 25: Why the Smart-Ass, Slacker Masterpiece Is the Definitive Indie Rock Album.

Young was fired from Pavement in 1993 apparently after his antics on tour — largely fueled by a drinking problem, according to his bandmates — came to a boiling point. The drummer reunited with Pavement in 2010 for two shows.

He went on to release three projects with the band Gary Young’s Hospital between 1994 and 2004 and also put out the solo album Malfunction in 2016.

Quavo‘s assistant, who was one of three people wounded in the November 2022 shooting in Houston that killed Migos rapper Takeoff, filed a lawsuit against the venue Wednesday (Aug. 16) for failing to provide adequate security, screening or emergency assistance before or after the incident.

Joshua Washington, who was working as Quavo’s personal assistant at the time of the tragedy, is suing 810 Billiards and Bowling, its owners and property managers over the incident. He is being represented by civil rights attorney Bakari Sellers of the Strom Law Firm and Audia Jones of the Law Office of Audia Jones.

“810 Houston was warned that they needed extra security. They knew it was a hotspot for violent crime and that an after-hours event like this could turn deadly in a second,” said Sellers in a statement. “But they ignored those warnings and now they have blood on their hands. This shooting was a tragedy. But it was a preventable tragedy.”

According to the lawsuit, defendants 810 Houston, LVA4 Houston Greenstreet, Lionstone Partners, Midway Companies and Cushman & Wakefeld of Texas “provided no screening mechanisms, no after-hours controls or security measures, and no enforcement of rules or industry standards to deter crime against their invitees.” The suit also states that while the shooting was taking place, “no security personnel or personnel from the venue responded or otherwise attempted to deter or end the violence.”

“They had no properly trained security personnel, adequate signage, lighting or cameras. They had no screening to keep out weapons. They didn’t even have a working metal detector,” Jones said in a statement. “This was a powder keg of their own making and folks like Takeoff and Joshua Washington got caught in the explosion.”

Takeoff (real name Kirshnik Khari Ball) was shot and killed in the wee hours of Nov. 1, 2022. He was 28.

Washington, who was an innocent bystander, was shot in his right side by stray bullets, which entered about an inch from his colon. And because the elevators and escalators at the venue “were not operational before, during, or after the event,” he claimed in the suit that he had to run down three flights of stairs while sustaining serious personal injuries, find his own way to the hospital and spend approximately one to two days there while seeking the care of medical professionals. Washington had the bullet from his right side removed, but doctors were unable to remove the bullet fragments. He currently resides in Georgia.

“There was no one. The bullets started flying and no one came to help,” Washington said in a statement. “There were no security guards trying to stop the shooting, no one to help those of us who were hurt, no one at all. They just left us there to die.”

Washington’s lawsuit was filed just two months after Takeoff’s mother, Titania Davenport, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Houston bowling alley.

Representatives for 810 Billiards & Bowling did not respond to Billboard‘s request for comment at press time.

You can read the full lawsuit below.
