Texas singer/songwriter Joe Ely died Monday (Dec. 15) in Taos, New Mexico, from complications of Lewy Body Dementia, Parkinson’s disease and pneumonia, according to his spokesperson. Ely was 78.

Amarillo, Texas, native Ely was raised in Lubbock, Texas, and later moved to Austin and was part of an influential wave of progressive country rock artists who helped establish Austin as a live musical capital. His music crossed lines and helped birth the Americana genre.

“Joe Ely performed roots music like a true believer who knew music could transport souls. His musical style could only have emerged from Texas,” said Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum CEO Kyle Young in a statement. “His true measure came through in the dynamic intensity of his powerhouse live performances, where he could stand his ground aside fellow zealots Bruce Springsteen who recorded duets with Ely, and the Stones and The Clash, who took Ely on tour as an opening act.”

Ely opened for The Clash for the first time in 1979 in Texas, then in the United Kingdom in 1980 on the band’s London Calling tour.  He then opened for the Rolling Stones on several dates in 1981.

Ely had multiple charting albums. His 1981 release Musta Notta Gotta Lotta reached No. 135 on the Billboard 200 and peaked at No. 12 on the Top Country Albums chart. His later work continued to make an impact, with Twistin’ in the Wind peaking at No. 55 in 1998, Streets of Sin at No. 51 in 2003, and Satisfied at Last at No. 46 in 2011 on the Top Country Albums chart. His 1992 album, Love and Danger, included what became one of his theme songs, his cover of Robert Earl Keen’s “The Road Goes on Forever.”

The affable Ely first gained attention in the early ‘70s as a founding member of The Flatlanders alongside Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. As a solo artist, he helped spread country music beyond American borders with his accessible, friendly sound, including playing a rollicking set on the Old Grey Whistle Test in London in 1981.

Ely was honored at April’s American Music Awards hosted at the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music at Monmouth University in New Jersey on April 26.  He was also a member of the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame.

Fellow Texas artist Monte Warden of the Wagoneers lamented Ely’s death, posting on social media, “My hero – My template – My friend – Joe Ely passed today. He means as much to me as Buddy, Elvis, or Don Everly. Such an artist. Texan. I’m just…heartbroken.”

Ely is survived by his wife, Sharon, and daughter, Marie.

When did wired earbuds become cool again? From Harry Styles to Charli XCX, stars have been spotted ditching their wireless earbuds in favor of being tethered to their phones, and it seems the previously-dated look is now an instant status symbol.

Model and influencer Romeo Beckham recently posted photos of himself using the wired earphones while getting ready for Fashion Week. And Dua Lipa revealed that she keeps not one, but three pairs of wired earbuds with her at all times. Now, they’ve become a great gift idea or stocking stuffer idea for the holidays too.

Of course there are many reasons why wired earbuds are better than wireless ones: for starters, they’re less likely to fall out of your ears and disappear into some crack or crevice on the road, or on your commute. Many people also find them more comfortable, since they’re pretty “locked in” to your ears rather than dangling from your lobes precariously.

Wired earbuds are also better for sound quality, owing to the direct connection to your music source rather than relying on Bluetooth pairing. Dropped calls or music fading in and out? That’s not a problem with wired earbuds (well… at least not dropped calls due to phone pairing issues). And wired earbuds never require a battery source or charging, since they plug directly into your phone. Wireless earbuds require you to keep them charged or carry them in an accompanying charging case.

Of course, wired earbuds (and wired headphones) saw a decline in popularity a few years ago when cell phone providers got rid of the headphone jack on most units. But you can now find wired earphones with USB-C connections, including the popular Apple Earbuds (seen above). The USB-C plug lets you easily affix your earbuds to your phone, using the same slot you would use for charging.

Apple’s official wired earbuds are dubbed the “EarPods” (get it? Compared to the Bluetooth AirPods?) and they feature two ergonomic earbuds attached to an approximately three-foot cord. The cord has a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, change songs and even answer calls with just the push of a button.

It’s not just for listening to music or watching videos — Apple says the EarPods have a built-in microphone that automatically focuses on your voice when you’re on a call, so you always come in loud and clear. Amazon says more than 10,000 shoppers have picked up these buds in the last few weeks alone — another sign of the wired comeback.

Ray J is doubling down on his assertion that Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner have engaged in racketeering, saying in a new court filing that their family business empire is “a criminal enterprise akin to the mob.”

The Friday (Dec. 12) filing is the latest salvo in a salacious legal battle that began with Kardashian and Jenner suing Ray J for defamation after they say he falsely talked about them being investigated for racketeering on both a TMZ broadcast and Twitch livestream. The R&B singer countersued, accusing Kardashian of intentionally leaking their infamous sex tape back in 2007.

Related

Ray J (William Ray Norwood Jr.) is now asking a Los Angeles judge to throw out the defamation allegations under California’s anti-SLAPP law, which bars meritless litigation that tramples on free speech. The singer says the claims will fail because, at the time he went on TMZ and Twitch, he genuinely believed Kardashian and Jenner had violated the Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.

“To me, Kim and Kris have repeatedly engaged in a criminal enterprise and racketeering activity, violating RICO over and over again. I have no doubt about that,” writes Ray J in his Friday declaration. “Every time someone does something the Kardashians don’t like, they use their money and power to silence them. The Kardashian enterprise has made billions of dollars off their racketeering activities.”

Ray J’s filing then makes a very 2025 assertion: that his beliefs about the Kardashian family’s supposed racketeering activity were confirmed by ChatGPT. He says that when prompted with his claims against the family — including that they lied about the 2007 sex tape and extorted him into signing a fraudulent settlement agreement — the AI chatbot responded that he had a “strong” case for RICO.

Related

This unusual argument is a creative one for clearing the “actual malice” threshold of libel law, in which a plaintiff must show that their defamer lied on purpose. AI chatbots like ChatGPT have often been criticized for being overly sycophantic, meaning they tend to echo back what you tell them. This can have the effect of entrenching false beliefs, which could theoretically make someone like Ray J believe they were telling the truth, even if a statement was actually specious.

Ray J’s Friday court filing also argues that regardless of whether he really believed what he said on TMZ and Twitch, the defamation claims should be thrown out because the broadcasts were not intended to be “taken seriously or at face value.”

“Norwood is also widely known as a successful ‘troll’ — a person who engages in provocation, insults people and talks a lot of ‘smack’ online,” writes his attorney, Howard King, in the anti-SLAPP motion. “‘Trolling’ is not slander; rather, it is a skill that streamers (like Norwood) wield to generate public discourse and create chaos which, in turn, increases viewership, online following, popularity and influence.”

Reps for Kardashian and Jenner did not immediately return a request for comment on Monday (Dec. 15). Their lawyer, Alex Spiro, has previously written in court filings that Ray J’s RICO claims are “blatantly false” and aimed merely at “reviving his own fading notoriety.”

Billboard VIP Pass

Dionne Warwick is facing a lawsuit claiming the legendary singer has turned her back on a rights management company that negotiated her deal for the famed sample of her song “Walk on By” in Doja Cat‘s chart-topping hit “Paint the Town Red.”

In a case filed Monday (Dec. 15), a company called Artists Rights Enforcement Corp. says it’s repped Warwick for years “at great effort and expense” on tricky issues, ranging from the recent Doja sample to a 2002 lawsuit against Atlantic Records. But the company says she’s now trying to back out.

Related

“After decades of service, Ms. Warwick is now trying to evade paying Artists Rights hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars,” the company’s lawyers write. “In so doing, she has violated her contracts with Artists Rights.”

Artists Rights says it provided its services to Warwick for years “at no cost to her,” assuming all the risk and upfront costs. In return, it says she agreed in 2002 to pay the company a 50 percent cut of any money recovered through the enforcement efforts — and to do so “in perpetuity.”

Such arrangements are not unheard of in the music industry, which confronts many artists, even legendary stars, with a thicket of complicated rights deals with a slew of different companies. They mirror contingency deals employed by some law firms, which represent plaintiffs for free with the hope of a big payoff in court.

Warwick’s arrangement worked well for both sides for years, according to Artists Rights, resulting in more than $2.5 million in revenue and a “sixtyfold” increase in royalty distributions from her record companies, according to the lawsuit. But in recent years, Warwick has “increasingly expressed her desire to stop paying Artists Rights,” the company says; in September, her lawyers allegedly reached out to “terminate” the agreement entirely.

Related

“Artists Rights has performed all of its obligations under the contracts,” the company’s lawyers write. “Ms. Warwick has wrongfully and unreasonably repudiated the contracts.”

Among its work for Warwick, Artists Rights says it handled a 2002 lawsuit against Atlantic and others over the royalties to her chart-topping 1974 hit “Then Came You.” When the case finally settled in 2004, and Warwick was “finally was able to receive some of the royalties that she justly deserved,” the settlement deal signed by the star allegedly required that royalties be routed through Artists Rights.

The company says it later handled issues with SoundExchange, as well as a complicated matter involving Sony Music paying her royalties to the state of California to satisfy unpaid taxes, among other disputes. Then in 2023, Artists Rights says it handled the clearance of a sample of Warwick’s “Walk On By” in Doja’s “Paint,” which spent three weeks atop the Hot 100 and 37 overall weeks on the chart: “Ms. Warwick profited enormously from Artists Rights’ work,” the lawsuit reads.

A rep for Warwick did not immediately return a request for comment on Monday. Doja Cat, Atlantic Records and others mentioned in the lawsuit were not named as defendants nor accused of any wrongdoing.

Paul McCartney is mourning Rob Reiner following the jarring death of the director and his wife over the weekend.

One day after Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner were found dead in their Los Angeles home, the Beatles rocker shared a photo of himself with the filmmaker on the set of Spinal Tap II: The End Continues Monday (Dec. 15) on Instagram. “What a tragedy the death of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, is,” wrote McCartney, who guest starred in the 2025 Reiner-directed Spinal Tap sequel.

“It is so shocking in many ways but for me especially so, because over the last year I had been working with him,” he continued. “He was such an upbeat, lovable man. Life can be so unfair and this tragedy proves it. His father, Carl Reiner, was a great humourist before him and Rob followed in his dad’s footsteps doing a terrific job making many great films. I will always have fond memories of Rob and the idea that he and his wife will no longer be in the world with us is heartbreaking.”

“Thanks for all the humour, Rob,” McCartney added. “Rest in Peace. Love Paul.”

Reiner and his wife were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday (Dec. 15) with apparent stab wounds. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has since said that the couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick, has been arrested on homicide charges, according to Reuters.

In the hours since, social media has been flooded with messages of grief from friends and fans of Reiner, as well as backlash to a Truth Social post from President Donald Trump, who’d written that the director was “tortured and struggling” and suggested that he’d died from a “mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”

One person who couldn’t believe Trump’s crude remarks was Jack White. “Neither he nor any one of his followers can defend this vile, horrible insult to a beautiful artist who gave the world so much,” the White Stripes guitarist wrote on Instagram in response. “To use someone’s tragic death to promote your own vanity and fascist authoritarian agenda is a corrupt and narcissistic sin. Shame on you trump and anyone who defends this.”
