Spotify is giving its driving-age users a new way to slide into people’s DMs with a new feature called Messages, part of the audio streamer’s push to give users more ways to share and discuss content with friends and family.

Launching this week in select Latin American markets for free and premium users aged 16 and up, Messages enables one-on-one chats using text and emojis with people you’ve previously connected with through Jams, Blends, collaborative playlists or shared family plans. Expansion to the U.S., Canada, Brazil, EU, UK, Australia and New Zealand is coming soon.

Playback functionality will remain unchanged for users using the chat box — shared Spotify content will begin playing instantly, even before a message is accepted. Video content will still auto-expand to full view, and users can tap shared cards to navigate directly to full entities like playlists, albums or show pages. Users can share directly from the Now Playing view.

Spotify said the feature is designed to streamline the whole sharing process by giving users a dedicated inbox to track and discuss songs, podcasts and books, and emphasized that Messages is meant to complement —  not replace — existing share-heavy platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp.

“For artists and creators, easier sharing means more word-of-mouth recommendations and helps create new fans,” the company said.

At launch, Messages is primarily designed for sharing between users. Billboard understands that simply following an artist won’t make them a suggested contact, as artists and creators can only receive messages from approved users and cannot initiate or participate in mass messaging within the feature.

A Spotify spokesperson outlined some of the privacy and safety measure that will be in place. Messages are encrypted both in transit and at rest, and Spotify uses proactive detection technology to scan for harmful content. Users can accept or reject message requests, report inappropriate messages, block accounts, or opt out of Messages entirely via settings.

Despite facing prison time after an alleged altercation with police Aug. 21, Lil Nas X is keeping his head high, according to his father, Robert Stafford.

In a video captured by TMZ on Monday (Aug. 25), Stafford gave an update on his son’s well-being after the pop star was arrested for allegedly charging at police officers in Los Angeles. “He’s in good spirits, he’s all right,” his father told reporters. “He’s very remorseful for what happened. But, it can happen to any family — he’s gonna get the help that he needs and just keep him in your prayers. Give him the same grace and mercy that God gives everyone.”

Stafford’s statement came on the same day as his son’s arraignment hearing, where the “Old Town Road” singer pleaded not guilty to three felony counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. Lil Nas X’s bail was subsequently set at $75,000.

Police claim that on the morning of Aug. 21, Lil Nas was found wandering around Los Angeles while naked, and that when law enforcement arrived on the scene, he allegedly “charged at officers and was taken into custody.” Police took him to a local hospital for a suspected overdose before booking the rapper and holding him in jail over the weekend.

When asked by reporters whether or not his son was under the influence of illegal drugs during the alleged incident, Stafford immediately responded “absolutely not,” and emphasized that Lil Nas is “doing great mentally.”

The rapper’s attorney Drew Findling also told the outlet that his client, who he pointed out was “26 years old and never been in trouble a split second in his life,” would not have his life and career derailed by “one little moment.” When asked about whether or not drug use or mental health issues played a factor in the case, Findling said it’s “impossible to have answers for you the first time walking out of court.”

Middle Tennessee State University has renamed its College of Media and Entertainment the Scott Borchetta College of Media and Entertainment, in honor of the founder/chairman/CEO of Big Machine Label Group.

A ceremony commemorating the change is being held Tuesday (Aug. 25) at MTSU’s Bragg Media and Entertainment Building on the Murfreesboro, Tennessee, campus. Borchetta; his wife, Sandi; executives from Big Machine Label Group and the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix; members of the Nashville music community; and MTSU students and faculty are expected to be in attendance.

“I am humbled and profoundly grateful to have MTSU’s College of Media and Entertainment bear my name,” Borchetta told Billboard. “The opportunity that this school affords to its students didn’t exist for me through college education in the 1980s, so it is an honor to now be part of building those bridges for young minds. My goal is to inspire others and give back, betting on the creativity of students who dedicate themselves to the entertainment field. The Scott Borchetta College of Media and Entertainment represents the next generation of innovators and creators, whose bold ideas will transform the media landscape.”

Borchetta’s ongoing support of the College of Media and Entertainment over the years has helped fund technological upgrades as well as student experiences, including trips to the Grammy Awards.

“As one of Music City’s leading entrepreneurs and visionaries, Scott Borchetta has earned the reputation as one of the entertainment industry’s most innovative and forward-thinking leaders,” MTSU president Sidney A. McPhee said in a statement, adding, “We are here to publicly recognize what happens when one’s vision and passion combine with dedication and hard work.”

Media and Entertainment Dean Beverly Keel called Borchetta the school’s “secret weapon,” thanks to his support. “I can’t overestimate how important this is to the life and history of the college,” Keel said. “This propels us to international acclaim because Scott’s name is recognized and respected around the world. By partnering with Scott, we are exposing our students to cutting-edge ideas and perspectives.”

In addition to the broad support Borchetta has provided, Keel cited very specific additions and improvements his backing has funded, including hiring a strategic communications specialist and sponsoring the Southern Oasis Film Festival.

The renaming has been several years in the making, with initial conversations between Keel and Borchetta first taking place in late 2020. The pandemic put everything on hold, and the decision was made to hold the announcement to time it with Big Machine’s 20th anniversary this year.

Borchetta and his wife have a long history of philanthropy, including partnering with Vanderbilt’s Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital to launch a neonatal intensive care unit wing, The Big Machine Neighborhood, as well as the Music Has Value fund that supports music in schools and music therapy.

The College of Media and Entertainment has been a perennial entry on Billboard’s annual list of top music business schools. Artist alumni include Chris Young, HARDY, Lady A’s Hillary Scott, Mitchell Tenpenny, Evanescence’s Amy Lee and Daisha McBride, while music executives who attended include Kane Brown’s manager Martha Earls and publishing head Kent Earls, Big Machine Publishing’s Mike Molinar, Jason Aldean’s manager Chris Parr and Riley Green’s manager Daniel Miller.

Thomas Rhett and his wife Lauren are adding to their family. The couple revealed they are expecting their fifth child, sharing the news in a video on Instagram on Tuesday (Aug. 26).

“Here we go again! We’ve got some really excited big sisters in our house. God is so good,” Thomas Rhett captioned the video.

The clip begins with Lauren asking Thomas Rhett “Are you ready?” before stepping into the video frame to join him as he plays guitar. From there, the musician begins singing a bit of his 2018 song “Life Changes,” though he swaps the lyrics slightly as they announce they are expecting a new baby.

“Well I was wrappin’ my head around bein’ a dad/ A bigger wrench got thrown in the plans we thought we had/ Now Lauren’s showin’ and got one on the way/ Yeah, that’s five under 10, hey what can I say? Yeah, life changes,” he sings, as Lauren then shows off ultrasound photos and they celebrate their expanding family.

The couple’s fifth child will join four older siblings: 9-year-old Willa Gray, 8-year-old Ada James, 5-year-old Lennon Love and 3-year-old Lillie Carolina.

The news comes as Thomas Rhett’s single “After All the Bars Are Closed” spends a third week atop Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart. In July, he also headlined a sold-out show at Fenway Park on his Better in Boots Tour. He has more shows slated through October.

In just over a decade in the spotlight, he’s earned 21 No. 1 hits on the Country Airplay chart, won the ACM’s entertainer of the year accolade and picked up five Grammy nominations. His prowess as a songwriter has brought him five CMA triple play awards, each for penning three No. 1 songs within a 12-month period.

Green Day are headed to the big screen. The veteran punk group announced on Monday (Aug. 25) that they have teamed up with good pal director Lee Kirk (Ordinary World) on a “wild road trip comedy” titled New Years Rev.

Related

The band promised that the movie is “packed with your favorite Green Day songs” as well as “loaded with mischief.” Among the stars of the film they said is their love letter to “road trip movies, ’90s nostalgia, and chasing the dream no matter how ridiculous it gets,” are Mason Thames (The Black Phone), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Jenna Fischer (The Office), Angela Kinsey (The Office), comedian Bobby Lee (Reservation Dogs) and others.

According to a description of the movie that will get its world premiere on Sept. 12 at the Toronto International Film Festival, “A garage rock trio gets the opportunity of a lifetime to open up for Green Day and hit the road across America to make the gig. The only problem is… they didn’t realize it was a prank.”

Green Day — singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool — co-produced the movie that follows the travails of punk rockers The Analog Dogs, whose greatest wish in life is to meet their heroes. After finding a way to get their demo to the trio, they get what they think is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to open for Green Day at a New Year’s Eve show, only to find out that they’ve been punk’d by one of their brothers.

“Nevertheless, naively optimistic, the young trio set off on the road from Kansas to California, with wide-eyed dreams of being on stage alongside their heroes,” read the description. The soundtrack features more than a dozen Green Day songs.

Green Day will continue their ongoing world tour on Wednesday (Aug. 27) with a gig at Lima, Peru’s San Marcos Stadium.

Saweetie brought some hard-hitting products on her 2025 Australian tour, and her makeup artist, Kayla Perez, spilled the beans on the star’s routine in a press release from ColourPop.

While we didn’t get the full look from base to lashes, we did get a few key products that help make the rapper look so good. The secret to the performer’s selfie-worthy glowy look? ColourPop’s Lippie Pencil in BFF3 and two Mini Shimmering Dry Oils in the shades Sterling Silver and Like Diamonds, two sparkling silver hues. Both products are available to shop right now on ColourPop’s website. The best part? All three products are less than $15 each. If you’re looking to update your makeup routine or you’re just a major fan of Saweetie, keep reading.

Saweetie's Australia Tour Makeup: Recreate the Look With ColourPop

ColourPop Lippie Pencil in BFF3

A creamy brown lip pencil.

Saweetie wore ColourPop’s Lippie Pencil in BFF3 every single day of her tour, and it’s easy to see why. The lip pencil currently retails for $7 and comes in a brown hue. The formula is vegan, cruelty-free, ultra-pigmented and creamy with a matte finish. The pencil features a pointed tip, perfect for sculpting out your lip line. It can also be sharpened to create that perfect point every time.

The brown hue was used to contour Saweetie’s lips, giving them dimension before layering on a gloss or lipstick. Long-wearing formulas such as this are especially important for a tour, given they can withstand hours of talking, rapping and singing. If the brown shade isn’t your thing, ColourPop’s Lippie Pencil comes in 35 other shades, ranging from neutrals and vampy purples to bright orange hues. There’s a shade for just about everyone. When choosing your shade, you’ll want to consider if you’re opting for a natural look or something bolder. If you’re opting for the former, you’ll want to choose a color that is at least one shade darker than your natural lip color.

ColourPop Mini Shimmering Dry Oil in Sterling Silver

A shimmering silver body oil.

Saweetie's Australia Tour Makeup: Recreate the Look With ColourPop

ColourPop Mini Shimmering Dry Oil in Like Diamonds

A sparkling body oil.

ColourPop’s Mini Shimmering Dry Oils in shades Sterling Silver and Like Diamonds gave Saweetie’s skin a shimmering glow that fans could likely see even in the nosebleeds. Sterling Silver is a part of ColourPop’s standard body oil collection, while Like Diamonds was part of a Twilight collection. Like Diamonds retails for $12, while Sterling Silver retails for $10.

Both products are formulated with a hydrating mix of coconut and argan oils, and includes silver sparkles and pigments that are suspended in the oil, giving the skin a luminous finish. The formula for Like Diamonds features added almond oils, while Sterling Silver has marula oil. There’s not much of a difference between the two. When applied to the skin, it leaves a hydrating, non-sticky feeling. If the silver hue isn’t for you, ColourPop’s Mini Shimmering Dry Oil comes in three other shades, including Pink Champagne, Rainbow Glow and Opaltini.

Saweetie embarked on her 2025 Australian tour back in July in Perth. The tour hit Brisbane, Melbourne and finally ended in Sydney on Aug. 4. The headline tour in Australia was a first for Saweetie. The trek’s setlist included some of the rapper’s top hits such as “Best Friend,” “My Type” and “Tap In.”

Just a week after “Ojos Tristes” by Selena Gomez, benny blanco and The Marías claimed the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay chart, the song ascends to the top of the overall Latin Airplay chart dated Aug. 30. The achievement is driven by a 10% increase in audience impressions, to 9 million, earned across United States Latin radio stations during the Aug. 15-21 tracking week, according to Luminate.

In addition to its winning streak, “Ojos Tristes” notches a second consecutive week at No. 1 on the Latin Pop Airplay chart. Plus, it extends its reign to 14 weeks at the summit on Hot Latin Pop Songs. The combined three-chart supremacy makes the song the first to occupy the No. 1 position across the three charts in 2025.

“Ojos Tristes” led the inaugural Hot Latin Pop Songs chart dated April 12, where it has since spent a notable 14 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1. Only two other songs have interrupted its reign: Karol G’s “Milagros” (two weeks in May), and her collaboration with Marco Antonio Solís, “Coleccionando Heridas” (five weeks between July and August).

While “Ojos Tristes” triples up ruling Latin Airplay, Latin Pop Airplay and Hot Latin Pop Songs in 2025, six other songs have secured double coronations across Latin Airplay and Latin Pop Airplay in the same week: Shakira’s “Soltera” (Jan. 4), Danny Ocean and Kapo’s “Imagínate” (April 26), Gloria Estefan’s “Raíces” (May 10), Rauw Alejandro’s “Carita Linda” (July 19), Morat and Camilo’s “Me Toca A Mí” (Aug. 2), and “Soleao” by Myke Towers and Quevedo (Aug. 9).

Further, “Ojos Tristes” delivers The Marias’ first-ever chart-topper on the overall Latin radio ranking. Meanwhile, with the three-way collab, Gomez and blanco each celebrate a third and second No. 1, respectively. Gomez returns after four years, following the success of “Baila Conmigo” with Rauw Alejandro in March 2021. For blanco, the journey to the peak is considerably quicker, whose featured turn on Myke Towers’ “Degenere” led for one week in May.

All charts (dated Aug. 30) will update on Billboard.com Tuesday, Aug. 26. For all chart news, you can follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both X and Instagram.

This fall, New York will welcome Migo Festival, the first-ever corridos-centric music festival in the New York Tri-State area, Billboard Español can exclusively announce.

Taking place Oct. 11 at the outdoor amphitheater of Jones Beach Theater, the inaugural fête gathers a genre-defying lineup of Mexican and Mexican-American acts, including headliners Netón Vega, Chino Pacas and rapper Alemán, as well as sierreño star DannyLux, indie-pop’s Los Aptos, cumbia-pop singer Estevie, Jasiel Nuñez and more.

“I’m excited to be bringing the first corridos music festival to the iconic Jones Beach Theater, especially since it will be most of these artists’ first time performing in New York City. I can’t wait for the Puebla York community to show the world that we are here and proud,” Migo Festival co-founder Paulina Montiel says in a statement.

With roots planted in the Puebla York community — Mexicans and Mexican descendants from the state of Puebla who call New York City home — the festival was born out of a deep love for corridos and a desire to create spaces where Latin voices and traditions could thrive in New York. Though New York’s Mexican community has often been overlooked in the larger Latin music scene dominated by Caribbean-rooted styles, Migo Fest strives to give Mexicans visibility and celebrate their contributions to the city, Montiel tells Billboard Español via Zoom.

In addition to its marquee acts, Migo Fest is spotlighting local Mexican-American artists who embody NYC’s unique cultural landscape. The Bronx’s Selines, Brooklyn’s SpliffHappy, and Queens’ Santy y Su Estilo Único will take the stage, blending traditional Mexican sounds with urban New York flavor.

In addition to the marquee acts, Migo Fest is spotlighting local Mexican-American talent emerging directly from New York’s streets. The Bronx’s Selines, Brooklyn’s SpliffHappy, and Queens’ Santy y Su Estilo Único will take the stage, representing the growing influence of the city’s next generation of Mexican artists.

The event also has a mission of giving back. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Migo Fund, which provides “essential resources such as financial assistance and art supplies, helping artists launch their careers or elevate their creative talents to the next level,” says the press release. Buses will be provided from three major NY train stations to Jones Beach to ensure accessibility to fans across the region.

Bratty, Delilah, Kane Rodriguez, Darriell Cano, Erre, MXKA and Somni, are also slated to perform. Tickets are available now at www.migofest.com. See the full lineup below.
