Sony and Olivia Rodrigo are expanding their partnership and adding a fresh lineup of earbuds to the LinkBuds collection. On Tuesday (Oct. 1), Sony unveiled the LinkBuds Fit and LinkBuds Open earbuds in a range of colors, including Rodrigo’s signature violet colorway.

Rodrigo stars in a new ad for Sony, which features the track “Obsessed” from her deluxe Guts album. In the video, Rodrigo sits on the subway jamming away to music until she notices a woman drop her earbuds and runs to get them back to her. The Grammy winner posted the commercial on Instagram on Tuesday with the caption, ”Linkbuds Fit x Olivia Rodrigo. I’m obsessed.”

The LinkBuds Fit and LinkBuds Open feature newly designed Air Fitting Supporters and upgraded earbud tips for a comfortable fit. They’re lightweight and suitable for activities such as working out, commuting and more. Both retail for $199.99 and are available in black, green, white, violet and customizable colorways. Along with new earbuds, Sony updated its smartphone app to ensure “seamless compatibility across devices,” according to the company.

The battery on LinkBuds Fit lasts up to 5.5 hours outside of the case and 15.5 inside the case. For LinkBuds Open, the battery last for eight hours without the case and 14 hours with it (22 hours in total).

Also announced Tuesday, the LinkBuds Speaker ($179.99). The speaker features Auto Switch that allows you to play music between LinkBuds Fit, LinkBuds Open and LinkBuds S.

Rodrigo and Sony first teamed last year for a special edition of the LinkBuds S earbuds featuring custom, EQ settings and an EQ user interface chosen by Rodrigo and her producer Dan Nigro. Sony debuted the LinkBuds series in 2022. The tech brand teamed with K-Pop group Le SERRAFIM to debut the WH-100XM5 headphones in pink last month.

This is The Legal Beat, a weekly newsletter about music law from Billboard Pro, offering you a one-stop cheat sheet of big new cases, important rulings and all the fun stuff in between.

This week: A civil war within the Fugees as Pras sues Lauryn Hill for fraud; the latest on Diddy’s legal drama, including an appeal and two new lawsuits; New York mayor Eric Adams hires Jay-Z’s lawyer to defend him against federal criminal charges; and much more.

THE BIG STORY: Fugee Feud

The Fugees — a hip hop trio made up of Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel — rose to fame in the mid-1990s with hits like “Killing Me Softly,” “Ready or Not” and “Fu-Gee-La,” launching solo careers for all three. But 25 years later, it appears something is rotten in the state of Fugee.

In a scathing lawsuit Tuesday (Oct. 1) that took personal shots at Hill, Pras accused his bandmate of fraud and breach of contract. He claimed that she had exploited his need for cash amid mounting legal problems to get him to sign onto a plan for a 2023 tour in which she enriched herself at his expense.

“It did not matter to Hill if she took full advantage of Michel’s vulnerability — her friend and creative partner of over 30 years,” his lawyers wrote. “In fact, she counted on exploiting that vulnerability to carry out her scheme.”

Michel also pinned the blame on Hill for the group’s recently canceled 2024 tour, which had been set to kick off in early August but was quietly called off just days before it was set to start. He cited her “gross mismanagement” as a key factor behind poor ticket sales.

Hill quickly responded with a detailed rebuttal, calling it “a baseless lawsuit” that was full of “false claims and unwarranted attacks.” She said Pras had omitted key details — like that she had expanded the tours specifically to help him pay his legal bills and had secured him advances that had not yet been paid back.

For more details on the lawsuit and Hill’s response, go read our entire story here.

Other top stories this week…

DIDDY, DIDDY & MORE DIDDY – It was a busy week for the indicted hip hop mogul, who stands accused of federal charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. Most notably, his lawyers formally launched an appeal of a judge’s ruling denying him bail, marking their latest effort to get him released ahead of his trial. He was also hit with two new civil lawsuits, one from a woman who claims he raped her in 2001 at his New York City studio, and another from a Florida model who alleges he repeatedly drugged and sexually assaulted her over a four-year period. Oh, and 120 more victims might be suing him soon, if you believe press statements by a Houston plaintiff’s lawyer.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR DIDDY CASE? – If you want a quick primer on the immediate next steps in the case — how soon might the trial be? where is he being jailed? — go read my explainer on the situation.

HIZZONER HIRES JAY-Z’S LAWYER – Facing a federal indictment of his own, New York City Mayor Eric Adams hired Alex Spiro of the law firm Quinn Emanuel, a prominent litigator with extensive music industry experience and a client list including Jay-Z, Megan Thee Stallion and 21 Savage. For a detailed breakdown of Spiro’s music litigation history, go read our full story here.

BRITNEY PERFUME BATTLE – A cosmetics company called Give Back Beauty hit back hard at a recent lawsuit filed by Revlon, which accused the smaller company of working with four ex-Revlon execs to “sabotage” the company’s decades-old fragrance partnership with Britney Spears. In the response, Give Back argued that Revlon only filed the “baseless” lawsuit because it was upset that Britney made the choice to “reject” the industry titan and sign with a competitor.

SUCKER PUNCH SETTLEMENTDaBaby settled a civil lawsuit over a 2020 incident in which he allegedly sucker punched a property manager named Gary Pagar during a music video shoot at the man’s Los Angeles mansion. The settlement, reached two months after he took a plea deal to avoid jail time over the same episode, will avoid the need for a trial that had been set to kick off in November.

YSL JUDGE HAS HAD IT – Nearly two years after the trial kicked off, the judge overseeing Young Thug’s sprawling Atlanta gang trial reached her boiling point with the prosecutors trying the case. At a hearing in which she appeared visibly frustrated, Judge Paige Reese Whitaker complained of “poor lawyering, “baffling” decisions and steps to repeatedly “hide the ball.”

AI LAW VETOED – California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a landmark bill aimed at establishing first-in-the-nation safety measures for large artificial intelligence models, a major blow to efforts attempting to rein in the homegrown industry that is rapidly evolving with little oversight. The bill would have established some of the first regulations on large-scale AI models, but Newsom and other critics said it would have had “a chilling effect on the industry.”

Alex Warren has already forged a successful career as a popular YouTube creator and member of the Hype House TikTok collective, and now he’s also a Billboard Hot 100-charting artist.

Warren makes his first appearance on the Hot 100 (dated Oct. 5) with his new single “Burning Down.” Released Sept. 20 on Atlantic Records, the song debuts at No. 76 with 6.6 million official U.S. streams and 3,000 downloads sold through Sept. 26, according to Luminate.

The song’s first-week reception can be partly attributed to interaction on TikTok, where Warren teased it leading up to its official release. To date, the song has soundtracked over 90,000 clips on the platform. Warren boasts over 16 million TikTok followers and his videos have amassed over a billion likes.

While “Burning Down” becomes Warren’s first Hot 100 hit, he has been climbing charts with another single: “Carry You Home” returns to its No. 36 high on Pop Airplay and places at No. 32 on Adult Pop Airplay, after reaching No. 27. It has also reached No. 19 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs.

Warren earned his first overall chart entry in April with “Save You a Seat.” The track debuted at its No. 11 high on the Digital Song Sales chart date April 13, as Warren bowed on Emerging Artists; he bounds to a new No. 2 best on the latest list.

“Carry You Home” and “Save You a Seat” have also both benefitted from exposure on TikTok. The latter has been used in over 144,000 TikToks and the former in over 20,000.

Both songs, along with “Burning Down,” appear on Warren’s debut studio album, You’ll Be Alright, Kid (Chapter 1), released Sept. 27.

Warren signed to Atlantic in August 2022. “Growing up with the cards I was dealt, I never thought pursuing music would be a possibility,” he told Billboard at the time. “I’ve always dreamed of working with a record label and have admired Atlantic’s roster of artists for so long. I remember my first meeting with Atlantic so clearly because they immediately believed in what I had to say. They wanted to guide me and surround me with an experienced team to take my music to the next level and I’m so excited to do just that.”

A lawyer in Houston is threatening to file civil sexual abuse lawsuits against Sean “Diddy” Combs on behalf of more than 100 people.

At a press conference on Tuesday (Oct. 1), Houston-based attorney Tony Buzbee said that his law firm and California firm AVA Law Group had been retained by at least 120 individuals “to pursue cases in civil court” against Combs, who was indicted by federal prosecutors last month on criminal charges.

Related

“We will expose the enablers who enabled this conduct behind closed doors,” Buzbee said during the news conference. “We will pursue this matter no matter who the evidence implicates.”

If filed, the new cases would dramatically expand the scale of the allegations against Diddy. At least 12 victims have already filed civil sexual abuse cases against him over the past year, and federal prosecutors have cited “dozens of victims” in court filings in their racketeering and sex trafficking case.

But Buzbee’s alleged victims would dwarf that existing list of alleged victims. At the press conference, he said more than 3,000 individuals had contacted his office and that his firm and AVA were continuing to vet new accusers for potential action. Buzbee said the alleged incidents go back as far as 1991, and that 25 of the alleged victims were minors when allegedly assaulted by Combs.

The cases will not be filed as a class action, Buzbee said, but as dozens of separate lawsuits filed in various states. He said he plans to start filing the cases within the next 30 days.

In a statement following the news conference, Combs’ attorney Erica Wolff strongly denied the allegations and vowed to fight the looming wave of cases.

“As Mr. Combs’ legal team has emphasized, he cannot address every meritless allegation in what has become a reckless media circus,” Wolff said. “That said, Mr. Combs emphatically and categorically denies as false and defamatory any claim that he sexually abused anyone, including minors. He looks forward to proving his innocence and vindicating himself in court, where the truth will be established based on evidence, not speculation.”

Combs, also known as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy, was once one of the most powerful men in the music industry. But in an indictment unsealed last month, prosecutors alleged that he ran a sprawling criminal operation for decades, aimed at satisfying his need for “sexual gratification.”

“For decades, Sean Combs … abused, threatened and coerced women and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation and conceal his conduct,” prosecutors wrote in the indictment. “To do so, Combs relied on the employees, resources and the influence of his multi-faceted business empire that he led and controlled.”

The charges detailed “freak offs” in which Combs and others would allegedly ply victims with drugs and then coerce them into having sex with male sex workers, as well as alleged acts of violence and intimidation to keep victims silent. If convicted on all the charges, he potentially faces a sentence of life in prison.

Buzbee is no stranger to mass litigation. After the deadly 2021 disaster at the Astroworld music festival, his firm represented dozens of alleged victims in lawsuits against Live Nation, Travis Scott and others, some of which remain pending.

Selena Gomez has always been humble despite her constantly growing success.

The star opened up about her recent billionaire status on Monday (Sept. 30) at the premiere of her new film, Emilia Pérez, at the New York Film Festival. “I’m very grateful,” Gomez told Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet. “I personally think it’s distasteful to talk about money, but I really am giving all the credit to people who buy the products.”

She continued, “They’re the ones that made this dream of mine come true, so I’m really, really honored and just happy.”

According to a report from Bloomberg published Friday (Sept. 6), Gomez now has an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion, attributing the “vast bulk” of her wealth to the success of her popular Rare Beauty cosmetics business, which she launched in 2019. Other ventures making up her reported 10-figure bank account are the multi-hyphenate’s music catalog and acting roles, as well as her real-estate portfolio and brand partnerships. Gomez also has earnings from her investments, including her stake in her mental health platform Wondermind, which she founded in 2022 with her mom, Mandy Teefey, and entrepreneur Daniella Pierson.

Gomez is now one of a handful of musicians to become a billionaire, joining close friend Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Ye and Bruce Springsteen.

Halsey celebrated her 30th birthday in style Sunday, eating cake and singing karaoke with friends and family at a surprise party that was so great, it changed the star’s perspective on the particularly challenging decade that came before it.

Sharing photos from the gathering via Instagram on Tuesday (Oct. 1), the pop star began by writing that their “life has gone through inexplicable changes the past decade.”

Related

“Some beautiful and awe inspiring, some puzzling and painful,” Halsey continued. “But 30 came like those ten years never happened, (much like the beautiful birthdays back home in Jersey before I had ever heard of the name Halsey) SCREAMING in an Italian American heritage hall with the people I love. I thought the only reason I’d have all these people in a room with me at the same time would be because I was in a wooden box in the center, but there we were. With cake and crying and bare feet.”

The “Closer” singer has been open about the ups and downs she’s faced these past few years, including being diagnosed with Lupus and a rare T-cell disorder in 2022. Last year, Halsey split from longtime partner Alev Ayden, the father of their young son, Ender.

Fortunately, happier days seem to be abundant now for the musician, who recently confirmed their engagement to actor Avan Jogia. The Victorious alum was in many of the photos Halsey shared from the party, feeding her pieces of cake and holding the About-Face Beauty founder in his arms in between karaoke songs.

“I don’t know how they did it,” Halsey continued in their caption. “But they made all the noise of my twenties stop, and replaced it with joy … That buzzer-beater joy is so strong that it settles the 9 years that came before it.

“This birthday is symbolic to me for so many reasons,” the Maxxxine star concluded. “Every birthday till the end of time will be. I am so grateful to see them all arrive. Thank you for all the birthday wishes.”

Halsey’s 30th comes less than a month ahead of their new album, The Great Impersonator, which drops Oct. 25. The star recently unveiled the project’s 18-song track list, having previously shared its cover and variants through a fan scavenger hunt.

The party also comes on the heels of a recent health scare, with Halsey revealing Sept. 26 that they suffered a “very scary” seizure that led to being hospitalized briefly. The “Without Me” artist at one point wished fans a happy Bi Visibility Day from a hospital bed in a video showing Jogia supportively keeping her company nearby.

“I’m home from the hospital now after a few days, so a win is a win!” Halsey later tweeted.

Travis Scott is set to receive the I Am Hip Hop Award at the upcoming 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards.

BET announced on Tuesday (Oct. 1) that the innovative Houston rapper will be honored at the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards show on Oct. 15.

“Travis Scott is a visionary artist who continues to push the boundaries of music, culture, and live performance,” Connie Orlando, EVP, specials, music programming and music strategy said in a statement. “With his unmatched creativity and relentless passion, he has redefined what it means to be a captivating, inspiring entertainer within the hip hop genre. We look forward to celebrating him at BET Hip Hop Awards 2024.”

Scott will take the stage at Drai’s Nightclub in Las Vegas when the awards show is taped on Oct. 8. He’s nominated in six different categories, including song of the year for “FE!N.”

Fat Joe is slated to play host for the night, while Megan Thee Stallion leads the pack with 12 nominations in total.

Marley Marl, Trina and Nelly were the last three recipients of the I Am Hip Hop Award.

The day after being presented with the I Am Hip Hop Award, Scott will fly across the country to take over MetLife Stadium in New Jersey for a special One Night Only in Utopia concert. La Flame’s Utopia album topped the Billboard 200 in August 2023 with 496,000 total album units sold in the first week, the most of any hip-hop album all year.

In 2024, Scott has been a chart staple in the assist department, notching three top 10 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to Future and Metro Boomin’s “Type Sh–” and “Cinderella” and 21 Savage’s “Nee-Nah.” He also topped the Billboard 200 last week when his re-released 2014 mixtape Days Before Rodeo jumped 106-1 after its vinyl edition shipped to customers — scoring the biggest week on vinyl in the modern era for a rap album.

Fans can catch the entire 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards broadcast Oct. 15 on BET starting at 8 p.m. ET.

Jordan Adetunji’s viral hit “Kehlani” completes the transition to a full-fledged radio success as the single crowns Billboard’s Rhythmic Airplay chart dated Oct. 4. The track ascends from No. 3 after an 18% surge in plays that made it the most-played song on U.S. monitored rhythmic radio stations in the week ending Sept. 26, according to Luminate.

Related

The new champ, released on Indigo Kid/300/3EE, takes over from Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” after the latter’s nonconsecutive 12-week command, including the last three weeks straight. It falls to No. 2 with a 2% decline in plays.

Twenty-five-year-old Jordan Adetunji, who is based in Belfast, Ireland, lands his first No. 1 on a Billboard radio chart. Released in May, “Kehlani,” which references and is named after the American R&B singer, went viral this summer and topped the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart for two weeks in August. The same month, its titular artist hopped on a remix, which came with a new music video. Adding to his breakthrough season, Adetunji was named Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Rookie of the Month in July.

Kehlani, notably, has reached a No. 2 career high on Rhythmic Airplay on two separate occasions. They reached a runner-up best as a guest on Cardi B’s “Ring” in 2018 and returned to the peak with “Beautiful Lies,” a collaboration with Yung Bleu, in 2022. While the remix “Kehlani” supports at radio, Adetunji remains the only credited artist on the chart as his solo version drives the majority of the airplay.

Elsewhere, “Kehlani” nears the top slot on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, where it climbs from No. 3 to the runner-up rank. The advance occurs through an 11% gain in plays at the format in the tracking week compared with the prior one, with the song securing the weekly Greatest Gainer honor for the largest increase in plays among the chart’s 40 titles. Beyond that, “Kehlani” repeats at its No. 3 high on the audience-based R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, where it registered 14 million in weekly listenership at the format, up 6% from the previous week.

Airplay gains continue across other charts, too. “Kehlani” inches 3-2 on Rap Airplay after a 10% boost in audience, prompting another Greatest Gainer award. The improved performance across multiple formats helps the tune jumps 25-19 on the all-genre Radio Songs chart. There, it captures 26 million in total audience, a 12% hike from the week before.
